Updated 1000HE wi-fi drivers "borrowed" from the new 1005HAB

I was poking around Asus' FTP & support sites last night.  It appears that we have a couple of new updated files from Asus' latest models that work with our older EEEs.

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/EeePC/1005HAB/

Most significantly, I noticed that the 1005HA has an updated Atheros wi-fi driver posted.   Even though it says it's for the AW-NE785, I decided to install it on my NE771-equipped 1000HE.  It worked flawlessly and updated the previous installation.  It still reports Atheros AR928x in device manager and I am now up to version 7.7.0.259, dated March 13th 2009.  So far I have not experienced a single wi-fi disconnect with the updated driver.  I had previously been using the Gigabyte-supplied version of this driver, and prior to that the MSI one from the Wind U100, which are all newer than the most recent version Asus offers on their HE download page.

I also found a new 1.18 version of the Super Hybrid Engine but it would not install (I think there may be an error in the compressed file).

I think there is also a newer version of AsusUpdate but I didn't feel like messing with that one.   ACPI, VGA and chipset drivers remain unchanged (ie newer ones are available from Intel) and I already had the latest available Touchpad and Audio drivers from elsewhere.

On a related note, the latest Realtek drivers dated May 15th are now available for download (R2.24).  They too work well but don't appear to offer any huge improvement one way or another.

So can I only use this driver if I have changed my physical wi-fi mechanism (for lack of better words at this time) ?

hi
if you have the Atheros AR928x based wi-fi card, you can use it.

Kidmalcom;

If you have a stock 1000HE with the AW-ne771 wireless module, then these updated drivers will work.  Remove your battery and check the little sticker affixed to the chasis to see which wireless adapter is in your particular HE.

Thanks for the share!

I have updated my wireless driver successfully and have not experienced any problems. I am hoping this cures my problem of having to restart my computer occasionally to make it connect to wireless connections!

Re: Updated 1000HE wi-fi drivers "borrowed" from the new 1005HAB

Yup, I've been going for about 3 days straight now with these new drivers, including a marathon several-hour download session, and I have not experienced a SINGLE dropped connection.  The previous NE771 drivers (Gigabyte-sourced) that I had been using were good but these are ROCK SOLID reliable.  Finally!  I can highly recommend that everyone go ahead and update to this new version.   I am still running the old 0605 BIOS, by the way, so this isn't a side benefit of the 0802 update.

Seems to work great in my computer.  On the windows connection monitor, I went from 2 bars before I installed it to 4 bars.

I'm new to the forum (had my 1000HE for only a month now).  Can someone post the (current) list of alternate drivers for the 1000HE and possibly what the benefits are?

Why are you suing 0605?

You should upgrade to 0802 or downgrade to 0601. There is no real benefit in 0605 sad unless there is something you are keeping from us hehe

That was a typo/brain ****, mate!  I am of course still running 0601.  I like having my 50 extra Mhz.  No, 0605 is probably the worst of the recent HE BIOSes.

I might add this to a Wiki dealing with Wireless problems.

As I don't have a 1000HE, can someone kindly tell me what the sticker should say in the case of the different wifi cards (or perhaps supply a picture)

thanks.

I added this to the Wiki. I don't have a 1000HE so all the info about that model is just going by what I got here. Feel free to correct me smile

Re: Updated 1000HE wi-fi drivers "borrowed" from the new 1005HAB

wow this driver is great. video streaming is much improved. Got the driver to install on "windows 7 by going into device manager and manually directing a driver update to the ndis5x folder" within the download. Thanks much. Any news on the bluetooth? (might be the wrong place sorry) Have the new broadcom driver but still a bit wonky(works but gives me some error on startup( might have 2 drivers installed)

Re: Updated 1000HE wi-fi drivers "borrowed" from the new 1005HAB

@Turionaltec;

Thanks for incorporating my find into the Wiki.  I'm just glad to be able to contribute some useful info to the community!!

After months of frustration with my 1000H & HE, I'm glad to say that I'm finally happy enough with my HE's wireless performance that I am no longer considering a new wi-fi module.   All thanks to a simple driver update.

@propylene22;

No word on Bluetooth. I think there is a newer build from Feb or March for XP but nothing yet for Vista or 7 AFAIK.

Re: Updated 1000HE wi-fi drivers "borrowed" from the new 1005HAB

Thanks for the information!  This stopped my periodic Wifi drop out.

Also when I went to the Realtek link, they had an even newer version: 2.25 deployed on May 27, 2009.  Like your experience with 2.24, I do not see any improvement.

I have an AW-NE766 (so says the sticker) and have had a dropout where I needed to restart the computer.  I have only had my 1000he for a few days.  Will this help my system? Thanks!

It *SHOULD* but I am not positive as I only have the NE771 card in mine.  My advice would be to give it a shot and just go back to a previous restore point or just uninstall the new driver & re-install your previous one if it doesn't work.   Either way, post back here and let us know what your results are.

Re: Updated 1000HE wi-fi drivers "borrowed" from the new 1005HAB

I need a little help...  I downloaded driver, unziped and ran the setup.exe.  It didnt seem to work. I got an error message saying "the device may not be present or may be unplugged" at the beginning of the install.  In device manager, under details it still says signed date of 9-24-2008 version: 1.2.

What do I do??  thanks
