Version 0.2 of AsusLauncher Tools has just been released.
These tools are the beginning (hopefully) of a set of tools to help beginners (or lazy people like me) to configure the default Xandros (simple) interface, without having to dig around in any configuration files.
It consists currently of two tools, altool, which is an Icon adder. reloadalg, which is a tool to reload the AsusLauncher without closing your programs, eg. to refresh newly added icons.
This version now has a complete removal script, so if you don't like it, it can be fully removed from your system using dpkg or synaptic.
You can download it here.

Thanks for the great job. I am sure this will be handy for Eee newbies.

Even for non-newbies I'm sure it'd be much easier than having to open up a text editor and form perfect xml everytime you just wanted to add a simple icon to your tabs. I'm truly surprised Asus didn't include something this simple.

sorry to sound silly - but how do i run/install this?
(i know how to install from the app manager, and repositories - but this downloads a file which extracts when double clicked on and im not sure where to move it to)

Ok, so who is going to run a comparison between this and this?

It seems that this tool is (currently) for adding entries to tabs, whereas the other permits editing etc.

poloman,
sorry to sound silly - but how do i run/install this?
Right click on the file, and you'll see an option "Install DEB file", select that, and it should all install properly for you.

when i do a right click i get the usual open link in new tab etc but no installation option!
Linux newbie here too!

First you click on the link on the website to download it and then, once it is downloaded, you right click to install it.

Once you have downloaded it, find it via File Manager and from there you can right mouse click and select Install. When it's finished, then go look at your Settings Tab (Easy Mode) and you'll see a new icon that says Launch Tools!

nice one - i'll give that a go - thanks for the tip!

yes

Yes it can add an icon for any program you like. Just type in either the full command name. Or you can even just type the name of the program (like gkrellm for instance) and press enter, and it will find the full command path or you (providing it exists of course).

Now if it could add the ability to remove icons and allow for the adding/moving/removing of tabs....
Offline
Sharpy,
The AsusLauncher requires icons to be in a special format, and they should be in a special folder also.
The next version of Launch Tools will include a utility to convert your existing icons into AsusLauncher compatible ones. For now, you'll either have to use pre-existing icons that you see when you click browse, or read this post to learn how to create them manually.

Bazza,
Now if it could add the ability to remove icons and allow for the adding/moving/removing of tabs....
Version 0.3 is going to include an iconmaker, as well as icon removal and tab/folder creation/removal as well.

I had to enter the full command path myself. I tried adding 'gimp' and it didn't work and didn't give a warning. Adding '/usr/bin/gimp' did the job.

Thanks for the post and all the help. It work great!

This tool isn't made/developed by Asus is it? Asus may come after you for using their trademark. Just a heads up.
Looks good tho, installing.

Excellent. I'll keep my eyes peeled!
(Incidentally, there are a LOT of icons already in the OS - though largely hidden in Easy Mode)
Who knows, maybe 0.3 will encourage me to return to 'Easy' from 'Advanced'.

This program is great, but after I installed it my fonts in the simple mode are messed up; taskbar fonts are larger, clock font is larger. They are larger and the taskbar clock is no longer in 24hr format and its font is larger too. Is there any way to change the fonts back to their normal size and put the clock back to 24hr format?

No it's not affiliated with Asus in any way, and actually the program is called "Launch Tools" not AsusLauncher Tools, I merely used that title here in the forum post, to make it clear that the program is for use with the AsusLauncher program. If you download the program, you'll find it doesn't contain the name Asus whatsoever.
