Just picked up my 1008HA in Hong Kong (Golden Computer Center Sham Shui Po). Overall, I'm very pleased with this design.
A couple of initial observations:
1) Memory/HDD do not appear to be user serviceable. I asked if it was possible and was told I had to bring it to the ASUS service center to get this done. I'm thinking you may void the warranty if you try it yourself.
2) The first unit I looked at had a loose keyboard. Hitting the left shift key caused part of the keyboard to wobble (make sure you check the keyboard carefully upon purchase). This problem is not uncommon with laptops, had the same issue with my old dell XPS1210.....
3) Was surprised that XP boots pretty fast....Though I'd really like to upgrade to ubuntu or possibly try out OSX
4) This thing is thin! It's got a really nice form factor, great screen and weighs less than my eee 901!
5) 2 finger scrolling not enabled!! Or at least I haven't figured out how to do it yet.
Anyway, I'm continuing to test/play with it.....Will post more updates. If you are interested in buying one, and aren't deterred by being unable to upgrade memory/HDD yourself, I'd say go for it....This is one sweet machine!

Would go and have a look today. ![]()

Ok, I've already wiped the hard drive to install Ubuntu remix.... It looked very cool but had issues with wifi on that release (anyone have any advice?) now trying ubuntu 9.0.4 full, will report back....

Only black color is available but appearance is really impressive. However, after testing the keyboard, the typing feeling is not really good and would possibly be missing character while in fast typing. How do you feel about it?

I think the keyboard is fine...It doesn't have the same chicklet keyboard as the 1000HE unfortunately but it is still pretty responsive. So far I've tried 4 different OSs and here's how they stack up:
1) default install XP - It's ok....Quick boot....boaring XP os. Made me want to change it asap.
2) Ubuntu 9.0.4 Remix: Great OS would have picked this one, but neither LAN nor Wifi worked after install. Don't have the paitence to fix at the moment.
3) Stunning as well. Really prefer the remix interface though. Same issue with LAN and wifi. Will have to wait until this is fixed.
4) Windows 7. Pretty impressive actually. Functions very well with just the 1gb memory. I currently have this installed. Everything worked (wifi, webcam etc) out of the box. Very slick interface. Pretty impressed.
All in all, I love this little laptop....BTW, I went to the ASUS service center to inquire about the memory. Appartenly it is ok to change the memory yourself, but they mentioned that the warranty would be voided if any of the "stickers" are broken. Will have to wait to see if someone comes up with a guide.

Thanks for the information rastaz!!!.
I am tried to decide between 1000HE and 1008HA and your impressions help me. The memory change issue is very importan to make my decision.
Regards,
Raul.
(Sorry for my poor english)

No problem Rahul. I figured, that the memory upgrade would only be a one time thing so was it was easy to get done at the service center.
Cheers

hi, rastaz
Have you found a way to make 2 finger scrolling work?

No luck on two finger scrolling, but enabled virtual scrolling which seems to work fine.

What exactly is virtual scrolling?
Also, does anyone know how us U.S.'ers can get the memory upgraded?
Thanks in advance.

I think you will most likely void your warranty if you do it yourself:

It's quite a daunting task and a full strip down..... I'm going to give it a go though - 500GB HDD & 2GB Ram

This post shows how multi touch gestures work on 1008HA. Is it wrong?

A review of the battery life would be much appreciated. ![]()

Virtual scrolling is when you slide your finger on the side of the trackpad to scroll.
Battery life is quite good on the 1008HA. I would put it on par with the 901 from my current experience. I havent timed the full battery life yet, but I would estimate about 4.5 hrs. I'm running windows 7 2gb ram, I installed the XP superhybrid engine as well as all the other ACPI drivers and everything works exquisitely....

SuperSeagulls, that's definitely what I like to hear....I'd love to upgrade the hard drive to SSD!
Please keep us posted. Best of luck on the upgrade. Not sure if you've seen this:

Congrats on your purchase and thanks for the info rastaz!
Its ridiculous how difficult they made this thing to upgrade! You cant even remove the battery to extend battery life if you wanted to!
And why no chiclet keyboard?
And why have they released a new bios to fix wireless; did they just want to rush this one onto the market?
Other than form and weight, what does it really make an improvement on?
I am quite disappointed in asus with this release - to make this proper, they should have made it expandable or come standard with 2GB RAM and 320GB 7200RPM drive. As for the battery, I can understand why they did what they did but still feel sorry for the person who wants to upgrade this component or receives a faulty one.
And lets face it - If a 1000x user wants to make their unit lighter than a 1008, all they have to do is remove the battery - something you cant do in a 1008

Just guessing. This model becomes a normal electric applicance for customer to buy and use. So they give a 3 years warranty here in HK.
Such design limits the chance of damage by customer at his own. ![]()

Hi Edot,
Thanks for your post. Look, this unit isn't for everyone and those that purchase it will be making some trade offs to get the smaller form factor. That's par for the course when you get anything this thin... I knew what I was getting into when I bought it and I still think it's a great machine.
As an owner of the 901, I've felt that netbooks have kind of lost their way. Getting larger, heavier, bigger hard-drives and bloated OS there was little to differentiate them from laptops....
Other than the thin form factor there isn't much ground breaking about this laptop. I think the 1008HA is a step in the right direction to what a netbook is supposed to be. I would have preferred a 64g SSD drive and Linux but hey, nothing's perfect. Being in Hong Kong it was very convenient to bring this into the service center to get the ram upgraded same day.
Even with 1gb ram it ran Window's 7 like a champ. I loaded the XP version of drivers, eee ctl and Super Hybrid Engine and it works great. Haven't fully time it but get close to 5 hours battery with wifi etc...
So if the thin former factor doesn't wow you enough I'd say stick with your 1000x, you'll def have an easier time modding those machines ![]()

Absolutely agree.
I hope my comments did not offend because that was not what was intended. It was just a rant :p
I love all EEE!
