Re: 11.6" EEE coming

well, with the competition pressing hard towards the 12inchers, ASUS can't afford to stand by. so, expect another 1695 Eee PC models until Christmas.

and the 15.6" netbook is coming in July, horay! i hope, you guys realize how ridiculously small these pathetic 10" displays are, you need bigger and better big_smile

Frankly... it don't sound like a netbook to me. What happened to the concept of cheap(ish), ultra portable machines?

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

Congratulations, ASUS.  You've invented the laptop.  Think someone might have got there before you, though...

I have an old 11.3" laptop here - picked it up when it was thrown out from work years ago.  Called a "HiNote VP" or something.  Really old, 1GB HDD and barely capable of running Windows 98SE.  It was a nice little machine... before ASUS invented the eeepc.

It's sad to see Asus being so active in losing their way with netbooks when they were once so active in leading the way with netbooks.  The company that would be king, now desperate to be just one of the followers.

roll And just in time for christmas next year, we'll get the 22" 'netbooks' with optical drives, a full range of ports and 30 minutes of battery life...

...I'll just stick my 4G in my pocket and go somewhere quiet.

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

All that extra keyboard and screen estate got to be powered, and carried. Besides you can hold, walk and type simultaneously with an 8,9" & <1kg. Models like this will proberbly suck at that.

So any suggestions on manufacturers that still produce <9" <1kg laptops?

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

nope, but you can get those very cheap at stock clearance sales now.

they don't do real netbooks anymore, even the 901s won't be restocked.

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

No way. Anything bigger than 10" is not a netbook.

And 10" displays rock, they are the perfect size! Both compact as well as roomy and easy on the eyes.

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

Umm, unless it boosts like a 8 hr batt life like the HE, I don't think this will catch on as I rather fork over another 100-200 for a full laptop....?

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

i feel very comfortable with my 1000HE... i think that 10" is perfect, others are too small, others are too expensive, others last too few and others are too heavy (compared to the wheight of the actuall netbooks).

as long as they keep the battery hours, the price and the weight everything will be fine.

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

One of the things not mentioned here with the whole >10" is not a netbook debate is that the current line of 1000s has a 10" screen but also a huge frame around the screen.

What if you had the same form factor body of laptop but a screen that filled the entire top lid sort of like this one does?
Then you have the same physical dimensions but a bigger viewable screen.

ASUS has lost the innovative drive somehow ... Dell already has a 20" netbook on offer:

as seen in the 2008 movie 'Get Smart' big_smile

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

I've seen a 20" HP "Laptop" at the store once. Absurd, completely absurd. Not portable at all. Looked like the Dell pictured above. Ditto 18" laptops.

Recently on a flight someone hauled out their 18" laptop to charge their USB phone. They couldn't even open the screen all the way. The flight attendant made a passing comment to him about the Macbook air.

I guess she didn't see my Eee which was actually out at the time. wink

I see nothing wrong with offering a product at this size, especially if it is relatively inexpensive. There is a demand. A number of 12" Powerbook users miss that form factor.

What I don't want to see is larger units released at the expense of smaller units.

Too bad no one else has took on the everun note in the bottom end. It is pocketable, but everyone talks about the stupid overpriced Sony Vaio P being pocketable.

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

Time to hone the EDA skills and design your own motherboard. The catch is small keyboards..
Soldering of BGA chips like CPU, Northbridge, and Graphics can be outsourced. Plastic chassi can be ordered with CAD drawing. If it's open sourced anyone can make new batches. And it won't go away like the industry seems to want wink

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

While a reasonable evolution of design to match upmarket trends, I for one hope that there will be new 9 or 10" models in the pipeline.

Besides the T91 and T101H which will probably be prohibitively expensive and with a worse processor to boot. Would the existing 9s and 10s be the last bastion of practicality?

I would agree that my existing 10" "upgrade" made the thing less portable (but more comfortable for extended use), adding 2 inches would make the machine have the same status as a typical laptop computer. Which is translated to "small portable desktop". As for design, the 12 incher looks too much like a Dell or HP. I much prefer the rugged simplicity of the 701 and the following 9s and 10s which are simply, upscaled on the same pattern.

Re: 11.6" EEE coming

Say goodbye to netbooks. I knew this would be a trend when they released 10 inch models. Eventually, they will just erode away the netbook market, making them larger and larger, until they just blend in with regular notebook sizes (with crappy netbook inards).

What I want to see is a 9" ultraportable with a decent processor and discrete graphics.
