XP performs poorly on my 901, lots of locking up especially with Firefox and Trillian. Is this due to windows being bad on SSDs? Is there some kind of optimisation(besides installing Linux).

How much RAM do you have?
Do you use a RAMdisk? Have you done a malware scan recently? How much room is left on your SSD? What size is it? Who is the manufacturer (is it the stock 4 GB SSD ?) Did you install Windows yourself? Do you defrag or have you tried optimizing your SSD?
What kind of performance tweaks have you tried? Please provide more info when you ask ??? so that we may be better able to help.
Thanks!

Out of the box, it may be due to much of the stuff Asus installs by default:
1. Uninstall anything you don't want, including the antivirus
2. install a good free antivirus (or even better go to http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable and use a portable AV)
3. Dowwnload, install & run CCleaner
See how you go after that

Disable NTFS timestamp and journaling, disable indexing service.
Also note that the C drive on the 901 is the 'fast' one, and D has a slower write speed.
