I'm officially an Eee PC user...

...and it's totally worth the wait. I'm typing on it right now. It's unbelievably cool. I'm working on a "first impressions" review that should be posted later tonight. After that, I'll be doing a full review that will be posted this weekend.

Let me know if there's anything you'd like me to focus on in the reviews!

Re: I'm officially an Eee PC user...

Hey, ant, if you get the chance would you mind addressing my questions?  I'm still trying to decide between this or a Macbook...

1. Do you feel 512mb of RAM is adequate for this unit or should I put the 1GB version into consideration?  I plan to do a fair share of multitasking...PDF reader, firefox, open office, maybe music open all at once.
2. Would you say the screen size can handle web browsing and PDF's in a good manner or is there a lot of side-side scrolling involved?  Also, is it fine to stare at the screen for long periods of time without worrying about eye strain from a badly lit screen or small letters?
3. How is the screen in general?  Is it sharp, well lit, and pleasing to look at?  I have no clue what the 7" screen would look like in person.
3. Does the Eee PC load and run applications at speeds comparable to more modern laptops and desktops or is there definitely more lag time from the older hardware?

Thanks a bunch and enjoy the Eee! =]

ASUS has repeatedly said Nov 1st is the day of the 4G in the US to people who have e-mailed asking. This Eee PC seems to be a production quality sample- full english beautiful box, english keyboard, etc. It's beautiful (and tiny)

1) 512 so far so good. I have 6-7 firefox tabs open, 1 large adobe document, etc etc. It runs fast. The only slow parts are my fingers! Keyboard and trackpad are plenty big for me though, more of a matter of getting used to a new keyboard.

2) Webpages look great. No problems. PDF's look great, I would say no problems at all if you have 1 page across. If you open a book style 2 page across PDF it gets a little crowded and you may have to zoom in and look at one page at a time. Might be a nice ebook reader for those interested. I'll get back to you on the eyestrain about 12 hours from now- i don't think it will be a problem though.

3) Screen is beautiful. Nice colors, good size. It's small but so is the Eee PC itself- it seems proportional in real life, Nice and bright, and settings to make it REALLY dim too if you desire. Might be nice for dark settings.

4) It feels just about as fast as my other laptop (dell 710m) at normal day-to-day tasks. Firefox loaded fast, OpenOffice loaded really fast. Again, I'll get back to you once I try some more intensive stuff, I think we're golden though.

I think I'm in love...

Re: I'm officially an Eee PC user...

Let me add-

It really is tiny. More tiny then I thought. This is a good thing, especially for those that were interested in it's mobility.

ASUS also nailed a lot of the little things like: 1) the ac adapter prongs are both small so you can plug it in upside down 2) the protective case is a really nice form fitting neoprene style- something that you would actually buy for it if it didn't come with it!

Hi Ant

I've seen the Eee PC with different coloured interfaces and icons. Is it possible to change the visual theme? Thanks

Just checked and yes, there are 4 themes on mine under the "personalization" setting. Silver is the default.

Ant, is the manual in pdf form on the dvd that came with the unit?  If it is, can you post it for us?

Damn, makes me wish I'd started an Eee fan-site.  If only I'd know that I could have gotten one early just by hosting a simple PunBB forum. wink

Yes, there is a CD manual, however I need to talk to ASUS about that one. I don't want to overstep my bounds, I'm sure you understand. I'll get back to you on it.

Ant,

Sort of like the theme question - can you change the background/wallpaper, or are you limited to the backgrounds that come with it?

Ant, Is the gcc compiler available in the terminal or do you need to set it up yourself?

Re: I'm officially an Eee PC user...

Congrats, Ant!

I'm interested in Skype functionality on the eeePC, particularly with external USB devices like a hand mic. or headset.  How's that working so far?

I'll keep an eye peeled for your 'first impressions'.

All Hail Administrator Ant.  Couldn't happen to a better forum admin.

Also, you're saying all the right things.  I feel much much better about splurging $399 for the 4g model at this point.

Pics! Pics and more pics! And get a hot chick to hold it please. big_smile heehee Kidding aside, I'd really like to see comparative pics of the EEE, beside common objects so we can have a clearer understanding of how tiny it really is. Someone mentioned O'Reilly books before, or maybe beside a stack of DVD cases? smile

THANK YOU!
