something changed in your simpleui.rc, have you recently have an update ?

Same thing happened to me after I updated the internet radio.
Now what? I just configured all my mail accounts, no restore now

If you do any update, it only reflects after you reboot. If you want to have a stable simpleui.rc, you need to save it elsewhere and view any changes and edit the saved file and put it back.

FWIW I just got a 4G last night and noticed it did not have all the icons it was supposed to have. I have not done any tinkering with this unit (as it is for parents) other than updates. I know wikipedia and ereader are missing and perhaps games as well but not sure on those .
Any idea on how to get what was supposed to be on the unit and are these updates risky?
Thanks, Fletch

Weird Stuff...
Wikipedia and eReader also missing on my eeePC this morning (Sunday 23rd) when I booted up - applied updates two weeks ago but nothing new recently ??????????
I agree...... what is going on?

I just updated Skype and the dictionary and had the same thing happen to me. Not a major hassle as I haven't had a need to use the ebook reader yet, but I wonder what will disappear next. I hope Asus can provide an answer as to why it's happening.

Wikipedia isn't an absolute essential I agree, because you can always access it directly via the browser anyway.
But don't totally dismiss the eBook reader it is kind of useful if you want access to the eeePC manual...
I just did an F9 restore and the icons came back - did the updates and the icons disappeared again - very strange!
Edit; With a bit more experimentation I have discovered that even just opening the update utility and not actually doing an update leads to the missing icons and a search for altered files shows the only file that has changed is the simpleui.rc - it has approximately doubled in size????? - just looking at it now to see what the differences are...

If you do a restore, try to save the simpleui.rc, then you can compare it with the new simpleui.rc after the update and edit the file.

Out of curiosity, are you rebooting after every update the way the updater says you should be? If so, you should be able to narrow it down to the app. If not, that could conceivably be the issue, since each app update probably rewrites simpleui.rc and assumes it's the only one doing it until reboot.

Just edited my post - that was my suspicion too but as you can see in my edited post even just opening the update utility and NOT actually updating causes the problem which probably explains why different users are getting the same results even though they may have applied different updates.
In my case though the original missing icons problem surfaced yesterday when I switched the eeePC on - the updates had been applied two weeks prior without problem.

Massive difference size-wise
* 28,891 for the 2007-10-19 22-57 file
* 67,535 for the 2007-12-21 18-48 file
so obviously lots of stuff added
but the general gist of the changes seems to be support for extra languages as shown by a sample cut and paste (new file ends up being 33 A4 pages in word so don't want to post that here)

Basically looks as though they have added support for extra European and Asian languages by the tags. I am guessing but it looks like de=deutsch, es=espanol, th=thai อีบุ๊ค, etc
In the process it appears as though they have buggered up the file so some icons don't load.
Interestingly some of the icons in the new file have an "exclude" tag for China (zh_CN) - censorship maybe? LOL

If you guys figure it out please let me know as I am taking the black EEE to my parents in a few hours for present opening (Christmas eve).
Fed ex, after sitting on mine the whole weekend finally delivered it (a white one) about 15 min ago so I can experiment on mine, and do the fixes on theirs.
It wouldn't be that big of a deal but my parents will want to see the ebook
Thanks and Happy Holidays everyone,
Fletch

Same happened to me after I did an update. I will watch this thread with interest.

I am now also missing icons. My Internet tab looks just like the the original poster had pasted.
It was there 20 minutes ago! The only thing I had done since then was flip into Advanced Desktop mode. When I went back to Easy, the icons are gone. Ugh!

In addition to keeping an eye on the thread I started, can I suggest that everybody with this problem emails ASUS technical support. If they get quite a few emails on the subject it might prompt them to fix it quicker...

You bet. What email address did you email? In addition to that, what did the specifics in the email say? I'm not just looking for an easy email address and body, but I feel that if everyone sends similar messages it may help them figure out exactly we're talking about.

Just complete the form on their global support page
http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx
and they will email you an ID and you can check on the status
My message was short and sweet;
[Problem Description]
Recent updates to the eeePC appear to be faulty and result in missing icons/programs. When is this likely to be fixed - don't want to update again until I am sure the problem is fixed.

Has anyone gotten a response or a workaround for this? Gave my Dad his new Eee yesterday, and mistakenly launched the Update utility giving him the five minute tour. Of course, half his first-tab icons disappeared, so I used it as an opportunity to show him F9-restore. However, it'd be nice if he could update his Eee. ![]()

I haven't heard anything yet. This is weird, you'd think Asus would get around to fixing this rather quickly!

I found this solution to fix my missing eReader icon, see the post my Jason... http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=2180

The fix is also described here - basically the update process introduces incorrect pointers to programs meaning they don't work. Fix the pointers and the programs re-appear and work!

I too am missing Icons (on the Internet tab, haven't noticed anything about the other tabs)
As one of the other posters mentioned, I didn't even do an update, I simply opened the Settings >> Add/Remove Software utility. It isn't any particular update in that utility, it's just opening it which causes the problem.
I read the Internet section in the manual.CHM in the "My ebooks" folder and it mentions all of these:
Webmail web (firefox) iGoogle
Messenger Skype Network
eBook Google Docs World Clock
Wikipedia Internet radio 3G
Wireless Networks
I am missing icons on the Internet tab for: eBook, Wikipedia, 3G. I'll keep reading the other threads to figure out how to repair this. How do I restore if I don't have a USB DVD drive?
Also, I'm wondering if I'm missing any icons on any of the other tabs...
