GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

NEW V15 BUILD HERE

Edit: Fixed that for you, also, this thread gets my mod-stamp of approval -Chris

First the disclaimer

This driver is for testing purposes only! It is not suitable for any use.  I am not responsible for damages you incur to yourself, machine, other computers, family, pets or anyone/anything else in this world.  Basically you are on your own if you try this baby out.

This driver will give your EEE PC 640x480, 720x480, and 800x480.  There are no large modes with scrolling and the external display is COMPLETELY untested so far.  Basically this one appears to be good for games on the internal digital display. wink  It was packaged using Intel Embedded Graphic Display (IEGD) from Intel's website here  So if you don't want to try the build I made feel free to make your own.

Now I have not done extensive testing, but most of the stuff I have tested works like a champ (GTA3, Bookworm, Halo, HL2, Morrowind).  Those games either required a 3rd party app to run properly or just would not run well unless you used tweaks or hacks and then even some would not work at all.  I will also outline two issues I have seen, but can't seem to reproduce.

First the meaty part, download from NEW V15 BUILD HERE

As far as I know this will not work on XP Home only XP Pro (let us know otherwise if you foolishly try it)

Now this does include a self installer, however one of the issues I have seen I think is caused by the specific IEGD display panel applets included.  As such I would  recommend you only install the driver manually.

1) Unpack the archive to a temp location

2) Uninstall Asus display driver from control Panel, reboot

3) Should come back in 640x480x32 mode and prompt for the new drivers after logging in, point it to

..\IEGD_8_0_Windows\IEGD_8_0_Windows\Driver

You will get prompted about the driver not being certified, right here is where you make the choice to install or not.  Keep in mind it is a choice and your the one making it, not me. tongue

Reboot when complete.  Should start up in 800x480x32.  Again no larger modes are there since there is no scrolling ability at this point.  No idea if it can be added either.

ISSUES I HAVE SEEN

1) When IEGD display panel applets were installed via the installer I had a really odd issue with the fonts getting goofy looking.  I think it was after the system came out of sleep, but I have yet to be able to make it happen again since doing a manual install and not using the installer EXE.

2) Some games would make Windows go to 640x480 mode upon exiting.  I think this is resolved in the latest build I have made.

3) Finally I did experience a BSOD during a test install attempt.  I kept getting the BSOD over and over when I would try installing.  I was able to correct it finally by uninstalling a couple times in a row (even though I had not reinstalled).  And then installing the Asus driver again and uninstalling it.  After this I was able to follow the install path I have given again nd all is fine now.

That's it for now.

1. I can't access the link sad
2. Isn't the EEE using Intel 910..? http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/39.gif
3. Which BIOS are you using? smile

1) The link appears OK from here.  I'm in the US if that somehow matters?  I can try to put it somewhere else later tonight.  Anyone else not able to get to my link?

2) Yes, my bad.  I knew that from the Wiki, 910GMLE, Just a brain fart on my part

3) I did not compile this one to adjust the VBIOS, though if someone wanted to it seems very possible.  So I'm just using the one already there.

4) Thanks.

Re: GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

While the driver update gave me a heartattack (ended up with a crash screen, grey and black, restarted to a blank screen etc.), I must admit YOU ARE A GOD! I bought the eee pc for my wife, installed XP and a few essentials + some games like Zuma, Tropix, and (of course) Diablo II. I had to make specific tutorials on how to play windowed, how not to go off window, etc. Well, you had the perfect solution. I also find the way 800x600 is displayed better than before because scrolling is such a pain. Thank you and hope you further continue your work. Amd I also think this should be stickied because it  solves most of the game issues people have.
Good work. Maybe ASUS implements an official solution for this.

< not a god, just a gamer and geek rolled into one. smile

I hope to post more videos tonight of new games.

Re: GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

Info:
OS: NLited XP Pro SP2
BIOS: 0401
Model: 4Gb 3E Pearl (4A model)

Interesting, I uninstalled the old driver from Control Panel, then rebooted, and it asked me for a driver so I asked it to search in the unzipped archive.

It then automatically installed with no prompts, and after I restart my computer, it gives the following resolution options:

800x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x1024

---

After further research, the other claimed modes can be accessed through:

Display Options -> Settings -> Advanced -> Adapter -> List All Modes...

Are 640x480 and 720x480 supposed to be stretched or centered with black bands on the sides? I am getting the former.

Re: GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

I was trying to do something about this problem here:
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=5500
but someone smarter came (you) and the problem is gone now big_smile

You are a GOD, indeed !!!

and OMG !!!, you scale the bigger resolutions ! this is the answer to all my problems. post this in the XP section, people need this !

and a little problem: i don't think 32bpp is really 32bpp - my screen looks like it's 16bpp

PLEASE, PLEASE continue development on this, i'm sure this will become the driver of choice for everybody !

EDIT: only the desktop looks weird in 32bpp, games really have 32bpp, so only the GUI has this problem
and q3 doesn't work - probably no OpenGL support

it's still GREAT !!!

i'm really excited, and i'm not easily impressed usually

Re: GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

Now figure out a way to squish 1024x768 or more into the 7'' screen with no scrolling and I will offer you my younger sister for sexual favors. big_smile

Or myself if you're into that sort of thing....

It's already done, read on:

Didnt notice the resolution's are scaled until now.

Awesome!

Can you add more resolutions that are not 4:3?

For example, 640x384, 1280 x 768, 1024x614.4 <- dont know how that's going to work... maybe change it to 1020x612 instead.

Oh wow.

You're totally right.

The fonts become harder to read at the larger resolutions, but the font DPI can be increased for that.

Jesus christ, this is the best thing ever. The ONLY gripe I had about my Eee was the limited resolution.

Dude, if you can devote some time to refine this, I'm sure myself and many others here would happily donate to development. Make a website and throw up a paypal link.

Yes, the aspect ratio for the 1024 isn't quite right. If this could be corrected for the right scale it'd look much better.

Re: GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

On second thought, the better corrected 1024 resolution would be 1000x600:

384 / 640 = 0.6
480 / 800 = 0.6
600 / 1000 = 0.6

640 / 800 = 0.8
800 / 1000 = 0.8

.'. 1000 x 600 should display fine.

Re: GMA 910 "test" driver created with IEGD

I am glad you all like this driver so far, however I am disappointed in myself.  Those additional video modes were supposed to be hidden till I sorted out the issues with them, which I have not yet. sad

I must say to,  I have no idea what this is doing to anyones video card or LCD screen at this point.  From what I can tell it shouldn't hurt as it simply appears the hardware can in fact handle these resolutions, but I wonder if Asus themselves hit the same wall I am with the screwed up fonts?

If you chose to use this driver and do use those "out of spec" modes you do so on your own.  See my disclaimer from above.

@ 3rdk1d

I do not own any Home versions to test on and IEGD does specifically have "XP Pro" listed in the supported OS list, but not home.  I'm only making my assumption on that.

@ mixvio

I'm not looking for sex or money. tongue  I've never done something like this before so for me it's simply the learning experience.  The well wishes and thank you's are very cool.  It does make me want to continue looking more into making it as perfect as possible.  I originally did look into scaling one resolution into another but fell flat.  It wasn't until I started trying to get GTA3 to play properly that I found IEGD and put this together.

@ Fluffyings

That worries me too as I don't get any crashes myself.  I'd like more info on this from anyone it happens to.

It's possible this could relate to the issue I noted about the goofy looking fonts when coming out of standby (though for some reason, don't ask why, I call it sleep).

Lazer I sent you a PM, but if you get a chance can you explain how you did this? I downloaded the program in your link but I didn't understand how to use it.

I would personally like to take a crack at fixing the fonts and the aspect ratio so if you can give a brief walkthrough I'd really appreciate it.
