2 x 16GB Flash Drive + Hub + Bluebooth mod, using MDC space

Hi guys

2 x 16GB Flash Drive mod posts in Chinese
Bluetooth mod posts in Chinese
如果你是台灣或是看的到中文的, 歡迎到 Eee PC 改裝資訊網分享你的一切, http://EeeMod.net

I assume some of you saw my mod when I replied someone's post here, and the link I provided was in chinese language, Now I just finished the last major mod, and now I am posting a complete mod right here.

The reasons I chose Flash Drive instead of 1.8" drive are electric usage, space, speed and shock resistance. However, if you choose Flash drive for your solution, keep in mind that bigger size flash drive is slower than smaller version, ex. 16GB Voyager is 30% slower than 8GB Voyager, so as other brands. Well, I need space, not speed atm.

Flip EEE PC over, can see USB Hub indicator and Bluetooth indicator throught opening holes.

I am tring to keep the spare Mini-PCIe space for SSD when onboard one dies.

Now I still have 2 more items need to fit in EEE PC...

Hi ckegg,

I was going to use those exact USB sticks because of their excellent speed!
Very good job on the placement. What have you used to isolate the PCBs from the motherboard?

Re: 2 x 16GB Flash Drive + Hub + Bluebooth mod, using MDC space

that its abslutely awesome, a great job.

but my question is... if you want more disk space, why don't you buy a bigger laptop? i mean, each of these 16gb corsair its about 100-150$ (dunno exactly how much), so for the price of the asus epc and the 32gb corsair you could have a bigger pc.

see ya!

KaYiN, why bigger laptop, when this little fella is perfect? Or you meant more expensive 10" laptop with SSD? Well...those are quite expencive.

Great mod. I was just wondering...woudnt be easy to install extra memory into the laptop screen housing? I think i've seen a mod where somebody installed bluetooth inside it. I am sure this little flash memory would fit in. And you dont have to soldier on your motherboard.

That is a great mod!

In answer to the question why, it is for teh same reason people modify their cars or extend their houses instead of buying a bigger one, because they can!  Plus imagine the pride at owning one of the most sorted EEEs in the world!

I mean those 600-800$ laptops with DVR-RW, 14-15 inch screen, 120gb IDE hard drive.... and this stuff.

i have nothing against modding the epc by this way, actually I will buy one to me this next month, but i'm asking myself why spend more money modding the epc when you can buy a "better" one.

PS: I am trying to explain myself in a different language that my native one, so I apologize if i say something wrong or ununderstable.

see ya!

Re: 2 x 16GB Flash Drive + Hub + Bluebooth mod, using MDC space

the whole point of buying an eee is its very small size, and cheapness. Sure, you could buy a cheap brand x laptop with more space for the price of an eee with two internal flash mods, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as portable, shock-resistant, or cool. The nearest competitor to the EEE with a larger HD is the VYE/Kohjinsha micro. this has a fairly large HD but doesn't get the battery life of the EEE, also it isn't really powerful enough for video playback. also for the price of it, you could buy an EEE and put 4x16gb flash drives + loads of other stuff and a SDHC card in it. EEE is a laptop you can put in a large pocket, backpack, or if you're a woman, a handbag - can't do that with a 15.4" laptop.

I also agree with technoturkey. The bragging rights available with an EEE are awesome because it's so modifyable. It's really the first viable ultra micro pc. I've been after an ultramicro for years but have always been put off by the costs and lack of battery life of even the 12" models. The EEE gets good battery life, can be modded beyond all comprehension (even overclocked!!!) and is cheap like the budgie, freeing up cash for the mods. Plus modding stuff to make it more useful is fun and very satisfying.

Re: 2 x 16GB Flash Drive + Hub + Bluebooth mod, using MDC space

CKEgg, very nice mod.

Since you have two 16gb voyager drives in your eee.  You should try putting them into a software raid-0 configuration to double your write/read speeds.  I would be very interested in seeing your results.  Here is an article that tells you how to get raid-0 up and running with flash drives.  http://www.bioslevel.com/index.php/revi … 1190315496
Also were you able to get both voyager drives to fit in the bay without removing their rubber casings?  I hate the idea of losing the 10 year warranty for the sake of saving space.

I will buy asus epc and do some mods, but I only get surprised about this mod because the expensive flash drives. wink

People are funny.

Anyhow...somebody that wants to be fully portable needs Eee. but you cannot use Eee for some real work.

So most of the people use two laptops. Like me wink

Great mod!

I love the placement so you can see the LED indicators through the vent holes.  Are you noticing a problem with cooling though?

sure "thwy" will. I myself like a powerful pc. Like the Core2Duo, 2gb ram, 14" widescreen 1.5hr battery Samsung R20 I'm typing this post on. Or perhaps the Core2Quad, overclocked to 3.5ghz, 4gb ram, 32" widescreen mains powered desktop pc i have for the play of games. I'd be prepared to bet 80% or more of people here have other PC's. In fact "thwy" will probably have a similar or larger laptop to my R20.

To people like us, owning more than one PC is not a problem. The market for EEEpc here is for people who regularly want mobile computing but do not want to heft about a several kg, unwieldy, large, mugging risk PC that just barely has the battery life to play a movie all day every day. To "thwm", a device that is small enough to fit in a pocket is useful, hence the ultra micro personal computer market. The EEEpc is marketed as an "ultra mobile" pc - which a 3kg core2 system is not. The EEEpc is not a competitor for these pc's, for the very reasons you suggested. It's a totally different market, and any comparisons between the two are moot and quite frankly irrelevant. However, "thwy" require a larger amount of functions and space, in that ultra mobile pc, than the EEE provides as standard. It is in the ultra mobile market that EEE is placed - and hey, if you can mod, why not? The other UMPC's in the market that come with larger space, are very much more expensive than the EEE, even with mods done, and rarely come up to it's standard of power. i'm not going to get into an off topic slanging match with you in this person's thread about it, if you don't understand why we love the EEE and its possible mods, you won't gain any insight from such a discussion.

EDIT: back on topic, CKEGG, how did you mount the devices so close to the motherboard, and keep them insulated from it to prevent shorts?  Wonder how the components below are doing in terms of temperatures. It's a really nice job though, keep up the good work big_smile hehe i'll be joining you and johnx in the ultra modded ultra mobile market as soon as i can get my grubby mitts on a black 8g EEE big_smile

Re: 2 x 16GB Flash Drive + Hub + Bluebooth mod, using MDC space

Hi guys, thanks for the feedbacks

For some cost effective questions, well, you cannot get this size and weight of laptop by this price even thought you have limited storage and speed. You cannot put a 15" laptop into lady's handbags, you don't want to carry a 5 lbs book with you in shopping center. I am totally agree with Skree, he had spoken my thoughts. He points out that it is not efficient to use a power PC to do word processing, checking email, and looking EEEuser forum. Yes, I am owning 8 PCs, each PC has different jobs. It is how you assign your PC to do.

The reason I don't mod these things into screen panel because I want to mod some other stuffs in there, in other words, I am going to take off the buildin puffy speaker.

Crihz, I use transparency film to isolate between PCBs, it is great in heat resistances. You can see it on 10th pics, it looks a little blurry on flash drives.

mhespenh, the heat issue I am still working on, the USB hub is hot to my EEE PC

lonerebel, I never thought about setting up raid on these 2 sticks, but would be a good try. However I think I won't run them in raid because flash driver dies faster than SSD, you know, when setting up raid, 2 sticks runs together rather I just use one for playing music.

@ckegg great mod! But your BT module is huge... Also its antenna is covered by the Eee's internal shielding - how is reception?

skree, did you enough fun about my mistake, or do you want me to do another one?? (just joking) smile cool smile damn i'm not used to type in english, but I think I do the same mistakes in spanish, so nothing would change.

actually, I think you didn't understand at all my answer, i mean, i think that modding the epc it's cool, as many peoples did with BT, usb hubs and more stuff, but i found this mod to expensive (but really cool too) comparing to the epc price.

kayin.

It is at bottom side, not upper side. There is no shield protection in bottom side of EEE PC.

Huge? Well more feature, bigger size
