To my tenacious (and hardy) eeepc owners,
As some of you may already be aware, there is a special secret testing repository available on array.org in addendum to the standard eeepc kernel repository. Hardy-proposed. As of the last few weeks, its primary resident has been the testing release of kernel 2.6.24-22-eeepc. (There's also a super special secret eeepc-config package that hasn't been formally announced yet. Details to follow!)
What's new in 2.6.24-22-eeepc:
* Applied Elantech touchpad driver v5 patch (see known issues!)
* Enabled pcnet32 module for network support in vmware
* Enabled CONFIG_SCHED_SMP for better HT Scheduling on the Atom
* Enabled atl1 and rt8169 modules (networking drivers for the Eeebox)
* Enabled the modules rtl8180, rtl8187, rt2x00, rt61pci
* Added the third-party module rtl8187se (wireless drivers for the EeePC 701SD)
* Upgraded uvcvideo to r249
* Upgraded madwifi to r3862
* Upgraded rt2860 wireless to v1.7.1.1
* Disabled hardware header reservation in madwifi (to allow bridging on ath0)
* New 'eeepc-lean' flavour (Attempt to compile some the modules into the kernel itself for potential speed improvements.)
* ...plus dozens of upstream changes from Ubuntu (detailed list to follow)
Known issues in 2.6.24-22-eeepc:
* The elantech patch is disabled by default. Add "options psmouse elantech=1" to /etc/modprobe.d/eeepc
* See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-eeepc-kernel/ (Please don't abuse launchpad. Launchpad is not a forum for discussion just because you have a problem. This forum is! Thanks!)
TODO items in 2.6.24-22-eeepc:
* Investigate backporting ath5k to 2.6.24 to replace madwifi
* Investigate Arjan van de Ven and Auke Kok's fast-boot patches and techniques.
* Fix the known issues
How to link to hardy-proposed:
* Link to the array.org eeepc repository by following the setup instructions.
* Edit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/array.list and add the line:
deb http://www.array.org/ubuntu hardy-proposed eeepc
* Execute "sudo apt-get update"
* Execute "sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade"
.
WARNING: Whilst linked to the hardy-proposed repository, expect more frequent package updates as various features are fine-tuned and tested. Expect bugs and things breaking spontaneously! If you do not accept these risks, please do not link into hardy-proposed. You can always revert back to the stable 2.6.24-21-eeepc kernel by:
* remove the extra line in array.list, run apt-get update (this will stop future hardy-proposed updates),
* uninstalling the package linux-image-2.6.24-22-eeepc, or
* only booting into 2.6.24-21-eeepc in the GRUB menu prompt.
Eventually once this code is stabalized, it'll be released as the standard kernel so, if you choose not to do link in, it's okay. You will still receive this update once its been rubber-stamped ![]()
Thanks!! ![]()

Oh man Adam, you rock! That sounds very good. Thank you so much...
I have some questions:
* Does rt2860 1.8.0.0 support N-draft?
* What`s the status with the eeepc-config package?
Maybe I´ll try it tomorrow ![]()

Already use it. So far, no bugs.
But also in the kernel -21, and in the kernel -22 in boot time on eeebox I have this:
iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware
What does this mean?
P.S. super special secret - cool! ![]()

Yes, according to the changelog it does. Here are the release notes from ralink: http://www.ralinktech.com.tw/data/drive … RT2860.txt

We have no idea what you're talking about!

I have Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1 installed on my eeePC 901, all works well but not the Fn+F2 keys to toggle wireless network-access. When booting after having activated wireless, I have access with WEP-encryption (WPA doesn't work). When wireless is activated Fn+F2 freezes the system and I have to quit using the long press on ON/OFF-button. Wireless is then off.
When wireless is off and I press Fn+F2 the wireless indicator led is on, but wireless stays off.
I tried some workarounds with no success.
No I heared about the new kernel 2.6.24-22. I followed the way adam described in this thread, rebooted with kernel 2.6.24-22 without having wireless activated.
Now I pressed Fn+F2. A nice little window appeared in the lower-right corner and told me, that wireless is now activated. The blue network-indicator-led is on.
But there is no wireless network. No indicator in the top line, no signal strength in the network preferences...
So I tested to press Fn+F2 again, another nice little window told me that wireless is off, the blue light is gone, I can toggle the blue light now, but not the wireless-connection :-((
I stopped the pc, activated wireless, then rebooted, but no success.
The good side: There's no crashing anymore when pressing Fn+F2, there's a nice little window and a nice blue light.
The bad side: There's no wireless anymore.
:-((

@hermann4711 ... after enabling or disabling wireless, you may notice a bit of a delay before any wireless connections become available.
Can you email me directly with the output of 'iwconfig' and 'ifconfig' while the wireless claims its on, I want to try something. I don't think your problem is related to the kernel.

I would like to email you, but now the network indicator in the top line shows "no networks found" (I reda it in german: "Es wurden keine Netzwerkgeräte gefunden", so I cannot email to you, though I have LAN connected to the eeepc. I'll try to reboot ...

this new 2.6.24-22 kernel works fine on eeepc 900A
* VMware 'bridge' to ath0 is OK (ath_pci driver)
* I'm not a big fan of the new Elantech touchpad driver V5, but maybe with some tweaking it can be better ?
* boot time measured by bootchart : 21sec (/tmp and /var/log in RAM)
no new bug so far ;o)

I ran the pc down, waited a few seconds and restarted with LAN-cable connected.
It's the same situation as before. In the top line there's the network indicator with a little triangle and the message that there are no network-connections found.
I cannot activate LAN, I cannot activate WLAN.
iwconfig:
lo no wireless extension
eth0 no wireless extension
ra0 RT2860 Wireless ESSID: "meisenweg" Nickname "RT2860STA"
Mode: Managed Frequency=2.437 GHz Acess Point: 00:80:XX:XX:XX:XX #XX is for some numbers
Link Quality 100/100 Signal level -46dBm Noise Level -81 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
ifconfig shows much more, I cannot write it down, it's too long, but it seems, that eth0 show the right IP-adress (hard coded by me) and that there is an connection, the same with "ra0" and "ra0:avahi" whatever that means. There seem to be some traffic on all connections ("RX Bytes: 282082"), but I have no access with firefox.
Regards
Hermann

As mentioned in my other thread, has anyone else noticed that the two-finger scrolling using the new elantech driver is NOT persistent after a reboot (or even a logout/login) - in order to re-enable it, I seem to have to simply run gsynaptics and then close it without changing any settings.
Can anyone help? At least we now have two-finger scrolling AND the ability to disable tap-to-click (with the older driver you could only have one or the other)...
Offline
I had no problems scrolling with two fingers with the "old" kernel and not with the new one ...
Offline
I could use two-finger scrolling with the older kernel, but I was always unable to disable tap-to-click if two-finger scrolling was enabled, which was far too annoying IMO! At least I can do both now, but not persistently...

Any chance of getting the r8180 driver included in this release to support the 701SDs that are packaged with the Realtek wifi chip, as opposed to the Atheros ?

@hermann4711
I have the same problems as you with wireless on my eee 901. It's been virtually impossible to connect the 901 to my Belkin N1 Vision router with WPA - and the few successful connects all lasted less than 20 seconds. I had to use my neighbours wide open router instead.
When I upgraded to 2.6.24-22 I hoped to see a new ratech driver, but noticed that this is still on the TODO list for Adam (keep up your excellent work!) so I decided to download 1.8.0.0 from ratech and compile it myself. This new driver works superb! No problems with WPA or connection drops at all.
I have not been able to get my module to work with NetworkManager yet (NM doesn't seem to recognize the ra0 device when "my" version of the module is loaded) but I hope to fix that soon.

@rhinoman
Got it. I found the rtl8180 driver in 2.6.25, obviously it'll be in intrepid but its not currently available in hardy.
Backporting appears easy, so I'll import it in.
@devotional
I have the v1.8.0.0 drivers almost ready to go. I'll be able to throw both of these into hardy-proposed hopefully today ![]()

Dude, I have no idea. It compiled. That's good, right? ![]()
I don't actually own the hardware to test it with. I've posted it along with a test v1.8.0.0 to the repo:
linux-image-2.6.24-22-eeepc (2.6.24-22.43eeepc2)
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-22-eeepc (2.6.24-22.33eeepc4)
An update should be ready very shortly. (within the next hour)

I've posted the new version of the kernel to hardy-proposed. It contains the following changes:
linux (2.6.24-22.43eeepc2) hardy-proposed; urgency=low
[Adam McDaniel]
* EEEPC: Enabled the modules r8169 and atl1
* EEEPC: Enabled the modules rtl8180, rtl8187, rt2x00, rt61pci
[Upstream Kernel Changes]
* Add rtl8180 wireless driver
* mac80211: conditionally include timestamp in radiotap information
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24 (2.6.24-22.33eeepc4) hardy-proposed; urgency=low
[Adam McDaniel]
* EEEPC: Upgraded rt2860 wireless lan drivers to v1.8.0.0
note, the rt2860 wireless lan drivers are experimental. I think they should work, but I really have no idea.
Please le tme know either way
good luck!

@Rod
Quick question about the new Elantech driver. Does it recognize three finger strokes at all? You can check using 'synclient -m 50[. Thanks!

Three-finger taps, yes, but strokes just register as tap and release. ![]()

Is the static with the external microphone (901) related to the Kernel/Linux or just poor hardware?
Thank you. ![]()

Everything is working for me Adam, bar 802.11n.
I also tried disabling readahead as you suggesting in your other thread on the Intrepid kernel, and it does make a slight improvement on boot time. You cannot remove the package, however since ubuntu-desktop depends on it...
Are you planning on compiling any of the drivers for Hardy directly into the kernel rather than leaving them as modules, or is this work all planned for Intrepid only?
