I just opened my eee pc 8gb version !And took a lot of pictures.
There is no any flash memory storage on eee pc logic board!!!
It uses 8GB flash memory card PCI-E card instead

does that mean it's further upgradeable?

Yes.You can't upgrade other mini pci-e board.Like Hsdpa ,CDMA moudle.
I think this is very bad design.

But for now have someone successfully installed some mini pci-e on the free mini-pci on the 4G version (i mean 4G with the mini-pcie slot free)?
Offline
Can you try that module in a 4G and see if it all works with 8GB?
And more important.. does that module disable the 4GB SSD on a 4G when inserted? (Im guessing it will)

This makes more sense now. Two main boards one for the 8Gb with No onboard ssd and the mini Pci. A second with no mini pci and 4GB onboard.
Thats seems to be why when you use the pci that is in the 4GB models that it disables the ssd.
However you would of thought that they would of just used the same board for and then either added a 4GB pci card or an 8GB pci card, wonder if thats what they will be doing in the future, seems an odd choice for manufacture.
There is one thing that interests me though, there was a post that apparently was from Asus saying that there were manufacturing problems with the 8GB models. It seems an awkward way to manufacture, why not make the 4Gb model with the pci and then just pop in a 4GB pci card, to make it an 8GB?

You can use the extra SSD with the 4G and it will NOT disable the other one. If you note in the Settings Tab under disk utility you'll see a tab for an extra drive (which is for the second solid state drive).

Maybe because while linux will happily mount the second 4gb into the existing filesystem wherever windows would force you to have 2 drives of 4gb each.. Its not a major problem.. but it may confuse some users.
I guess the 8gb is really aimed at people who are putting windows on there.

Yeah I thought that but then again who knows.. maybe it will maybe it wont.. until someone tries we dont know for sure..

It's listed on the box as being part of the contents in one of his pics so i guess yes for the 8G it does.

Yes. Mouse come with 8gb eee pc free.
I am sure there is no any flash memory on 8gb eee pc logic board.
1.Flash memory is 1 GB ic on the mini pci-e board.
There are 8 pcs flash memory ic on the board .
2.I took off the mini pci-e flash memory card .And bios shows no any disk storage .(I will take picture later).

Now this is why i ordered an 8g ![]()
Now if only they would start shipping em!

Sweet! Hopefully Asus will at some point sell these SSD expansion cards separately for easy upgrading. ... for those with the mini-PCIe connector, I mean.
SDHC cards do the job but they are so slow compared to SSD.

Man this really makes me want an 8G now. Darnet I almost convinced myself to order a surf.

Yes. This is proof .No any flash memory storage on the eee pc 8gb logic board.

But don't forget the third variation: mainboard with built-in 4GB and mini-PCIe (79/7A series). If putting in an SSD expansion card like the one shown above doesn't disable the onboard memory, then this is the best configuration for those interested in expanding storage.
So i'm with sambartle: ayi45tw, could you please try inserting that 8GB card in a 4G and let us know what happens?

I think install 8GB pci-e card in 4GB (7A version) will be 4+8GB eee pc .
We don't have any 7A version eee pc right now in Taiwan.(A lot of 7B in stock)
We need send my own eee pc back from China on Monday. I will do some test later
I will show benchmark for onboard SSD VS mini pci-e flash memory tomorrow night.

@ayi45tw
Thanks, looking forward to your test.

@renmin
I haven't forgotten the third variation, however it appears that it is no longer being produced for the 4GB models.
Its seems the early adopters may have been rewarded this time around!

I don't think so.8gb pcie board will disable internal 4gb for sure.If mini pcie pin 52 is used which is 3.3 volt pin it disables the SSD in my 4g black.I learned this while modding. My good guess is when the 8gig pcie is in place we will end up with 8gig SSD not 12 gig on a 4g model and it is sad that the modding area is gone in 8g model which can in house quite a lot:(

I thought someone posted that the 4Gb internal SSD was actually disabled by inserting a mini pci-e card in the free slot?
For example (read the 1st post) -> http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=1061

i 'm quite sure that "ayi45tw" is right. 8gb pcie board will not disable internal 4gb .It's only prefer to boot from 8gb pcie board rather than the internal 4gb sdd.this is only my guess.
