I translated a Chinese in-screen mod using bablefish and some common sence
.
I've added a thing or two in the description of the pics to make things more clear.
Comments, changes and additions are welcome. All credits go to the original poster.
Original post and pics by user k95507475 on the mobile01.com forum: http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php … st=4143953
Used materials: 4 port USB HUB and Bluetooth USB dongle
An overview of the tools and the "project"
Remove screws and "gut" the eee

The camera module attached to it's USB cable
Remove the plastic casings of both the USB hub and the bluetooth dongle
Close-up of the USB wires connected to the USB HUB (Black wire broke off)
The modded bluetooth dongle, USB connector removed and wires soldered onto the pads
The 4 port USB HUB cut in half, some of the traces had to be rerouted using wires. The little shiny oscillator on the left was desoldered and reconnected using wires to make the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) thinner and easier to fit above the screen
Backside of the USB HUB
The modded bluetooth dongle soldered to contact pads of a removed USB connector on the (modified) USB HUB
Removed last USB connector from USB HUB
Testing functionality of the assembled parts, they are finally "one"!
Test fitting of the parts
The wire/pin lay-out for the eee's webcam USB cable (7a model) by drenboy (thnx!):
desc standard eee's camera wire
1 +5(bus) red dashed red
2 data- white orange
3 data+ green white
4 gnd black black
Cutting the USB cable: bye bye warranty...
Full setup inside the eee, ready for testing
The webcam still works
Bluetooth dongle is recognized, driver is working
Done. I think I deserve a break
This mod can of course be expanded so you can add a USB flash drive etc.
Splicing in the wires of the cam's USB cable voids your warranty unless you make a USB cable from scratch and keep the original cable in a safe place. (Yes, I know: Opening up the eee to some people equals voiding the warranty
)
12-08-07 - Added the wire/pin lay-out for the eee's webcam USB cable (thnx drenboy!)
12-07-07 - As some of the other forum members pointed out, it should be possible to create a setup where one would simply unplug the wire from the USB cam and plug it into a connector attached to a USB HUB. Then a new cable coming from one of the USB HUB's ports could be plugged into the webcam.
This way, you won't have to cut the original USB cable or remove it from the eee.
With a bit of luck someone out there will create a " Bluetooth expansion pack" like this for all less skilled modders out there. ![]()

Fantastic job
... How much space is there around the screen bezel? I'm interested in adding some other features. ![]()

Nice!
I found this mod as well but the translation from google was so horrible I just went off of images alone.
Thanks for taking the time to write it out!

OK, I get how the bluetooth-USB board is handled, but how is the Camera re-attached?

Interesting modifcation. The only part I don't like is basically "breaking" the 4-port USB in half and then resoldering the broken traces with wiring. I found a StarTech 4-port mini USB hub which is half the size of that USB hub for cheap and it's basically a small rectangle with 2 USB ports on each side with the female miniUSB port on one end and a power-plug on the other end if you want to feed it external power.
Nice find and thanks for posting along with the translation!
Cheers,
Kermee

This bluetooth adapter is supposed to be released next month. It's called the MoGo Dapter. It might be a better choice for hacking into the EeePC.

I think he's not using it to get extra external ports but you need a hub to control the cam and the additional bluetooth together.

@Haku: I wouldn't be able to tell you, but maybe someone else knows. I don't remember reading about the possibility to switch the cam off in the BIOS. The cam is simply connected to a USB port on the motherboard...it would be a nice feature though (GPS comes to mind).
@TeamMCS: Again something I can't answer yet but I'm sure someone who sees this will be able to give us measurements of how thick and wide any additions to the bezel can be.
@UberNero: The whole reason for using a USB hub is so you can add extra ports to the webcam's USB port. He/she* (k95507475) obviously removed that last USB connector that was still on the HUB and attached the camera wires to the pads on the hub. That's why he cut the USB cable exactly above the HUB.
@Kermee: Good find on the startech HUB. It will set you back $20 though, whereas some other cheap HUB will probably set you back only $5..and then again..this is hard core modding man, don't be scared! ![]()
@Andrea: Cute BT but...the price will probably be a lot higher than those $6 ebay ones. Besides, there's enough room in the screen bezel and placing it there will probably give the best signal coverage. Yes, it is small enough to be put anywhere else inside the eee though. The only problem being that just the screen bezel and the memory access panel on the bottom of the eee are not coated with any type of shield that could block the Bluetooth signal.
*=Check out the doll in the pics...I don't know anymore. (Yes I know, I'm only kidding)

Disable webcam in BIOS will disable added hub/webcam/bluetooth

Excellent post, thanks.
Here's a hub that may be suitable for this

I'm going to attempt this.
For those in the UK, these are the items I've ordered from ebuyer.com to rip apart and fit into the Eee:
Hub - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130521
Bluetooth - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/119342
4Gb flash - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129939 - there are cheaper 4Gb sticks on ebuyer, but this one is Vista Readyboost compatible, so it should have good read/write speeds.
Free shipping on all orders over £24.99 on ebuyer this weekend only.
Wish me luck!

good luck!
I just found another hub that is smaller than that other one I posted, looks easy to take apart too.
I like how one of the ports is on the end, making it very short

edit;
ooo it just gets better and better, have to find where to get these though.

ok, I've found that last one for sale, $20 us, it's been updated in some way too, maybe just physically. It seems like it has some nice features, like telling the computer its self powered. Maybe most hubs have this feature.
Anyways it's pretty tiny, I imagine the three stacked ports have varying length pins that attach to the pc board like another hub I have. This will make for some tight soldering but look how small it is!

I just got myself this one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Smallest-Mini-Siz … dZViewItem
Dirt cheap. I've seen it with a well known brand name for $20...sheesh. ![]()

Just ordered one of those in case the ebuyer one isn't suitable. Between the two of them, I should be able to make something fit!

Is it me or looking at the webcam it uses a pretty much standard pcb connector, wouldn’t it be more warranty friendly to make a cable that’s connects the existing cable to a usb hub then a new cable hub to camera via a new connector?
Pretty sure maplin would stock those connectors.
Edit:
Without cracking a Eee open, could it be these?

Exactly what I (and some others) had in mind. Some people were already hoping for someone to produce a BT add-on kit that would work in that exact way, making it possible for anyone who is able to hold a screw driver to perform the mod.
The connector does look pretty much standard and if it's not, some grinding down of a standard connector should make it fit. You could probably even use those "sliced-up" USB connectors you will find in some PC casings. I mean the ones where the (+) (-) (D-)(D+) wires have seperate single plastic connectors attached to them. You may also find these on the microphone, line in and line out/speaker wires.
That could be a very clean mod.

Would people really be willing to buy a all-in-one addon of the sort?
May make a small run and see. A low cost 2port usb hub controller and a bt controller.
Offline
I would be interested in an angled one which, for example, fitted in the left hand USB port and angled backwards to cover the defunct modem port and, possibly, the ethernet port. This way I wouldn't need to take it out when I put the Eee away.

I personally would want that but with as many as 4 ports, one of which plugging into the stock camera connector, one for bt and one or two for flash drives (stripped)
If you provided one that you had fitted with those mini connectors and provided matching plugs with pigtails for stripped modules I would definitely consider one.
Realistically, 3 would be fine, Of course you would have to state that it fit in the Eee and the price would have to be good.
Too much to ask?
I just spent two hours scouring a parking lot looking for a 4 gig usb flash drive that fell through a hole in my pocket.
I'm bummed. The one I have installed in my Eee is safe and sound.
Another reason to do this mod.

Got the parts and did this mod myself, I did 2 changes
1. removed the fan from under the mobo and placed a 4 port usb hub there
2. didnt use reglar bluetooth, got myself a jabra a320s for skyping over regular bluetooth headset
For those who want to so this mod, the camera wire uses non standard wire colours
so I decided to post t he decoded ones here
(Mine is a 7A model)
desc standard eee's camera wire

2 data- white orange
3 data+ green white
4 gnd black black
