Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

I'm looking to install Freemind: http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/in … /Main_Page

I tried a couple ways. None really worked. My knowledge using Linux is near zero. as a result I'm not able to react to the feedback I get to my own actions.

I tried to follow instructions from fremind web site to get the software on my machine. The message I got was there is no lib with the names I tried to get (libbatik was one of them).

Then I tried to use a Debian repository. Got Freemind on my machine but jvm crashes when I try to launch it (I bet I miss some libraries; I would expected the dependencies to take care of that).

Anyway it's far from being as simple as I did it in Windows (just run install and everything was up and running).

I would appreciate if any of the Linux experts around would help with a procedure how to install Freemind that starts from the default Xandros distribution on the eee PC.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

I installed it under the advanced mode desktop but I imagine it would work under the standard desktop as well.

I added the debian repositories and did an apt-get freemind.  It loaded version 7.6 onto my machine and it's been working great ever since.  I don't recall offhand if it wanted to load any dependencies.  There couldn't have been many as I am still afraid of breaking stuff and wouldn't have loaded it if it had more then one or two.  Are you trying to install version 8?  I plan to play with that soon.  (Now that Nano's over I can take the chance that I hose the unit)

I am very much a linux newb as well so this probably isn't a lot of help to you I'm afraid.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Installing 0.8 is not that hard. You can use the straightforward method on http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/in … o_Linux.29

Unpack freemind-bin-max-0_8_0.zip in a directory in "My Documents". Than you need to make freemind.sh executable that is done with  chmod +x freemind.sh

After this you can start freemind from console with ./freemind.sh or double click it from the gui.

Good luck!

On a related note, I tried TheBrain today (www.thebrain.com), which seems good from a very quick inspection.  That was easy to install - I can post more if it's of interest tomorrow.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

The problem with other mindmapping tools is their not free proprietary format.
Looks good though smile

I'm hoping someone will be able to get basket working. http://basket.kde.org/ has also got some mindmapping abilities and looks great (a lot better than freemind)
I don't think installing basket will be as easy as freemind.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Hey!

Never fear, I just spent all day fiddling and got freemind 0.8.0 installed!

I would post how right now, but I am knackered and need to sleep. I will try and work out what I did, and post to you tomorrow evening! It can be done!

PS - first time linux user and I managed to get there in the end. Had to update Java and not sure I did it right, but freemind is most definitely working.

Encountered several error messages - dependencies, problems with jvm, problems unpacking debian files and all sorts.

anyhoo, i'm nearly asleep at my keyb...zzz

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Thanks for directions.  I tried the manual method to just download the archive and run it. I got the same error as before when pulling from a Debian repository.
Java machine crashes (not sure if this is normal considering the context). anyway here is what I get:
I see that "joe" managed to install it (so, it can be done). But it looks like he has enabled a different desktop (than the easy mode that I'm using).

Anyway here is what I get (in the console)

#
# An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
#
#  SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0xb78ec8f1, pid=12844, tid=3084601024

This is just a chunk o0f the message

I added a debian repository (sorry, forget which) and got Freemind via Synaptic in advanced desktop mode, and it's worked without any hitches.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

It's comforting to see people running it ...it gives me hopes :-)

Some questions for those that have it working.

Have you used the existing (pre-installed) Java version?

Has anybody managed to make it work in the Easy Mode (not Advanced Desktop)? Maybe somebody is willing to give it a try in Easy mode too.

And if it's working only in the advanced desktop why is that?

So far the experience with Linux & Eee PC  is pretty good ...only if I could manage to get this one (Freemind) on the machine.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Did you use http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/in … o_Linux.29 and started it from console (with ./freemind.sh)? Does it crash right away?

I also installed it in easy mode without any problem. I haven't added debian repositories though. I want to avoid that until I'm sure I have a good back up option.
The error message that you've got comes up in google. The advise I see is reinstalling Java, it could be you broke Java by adding the debian repositories.

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Hello again,

I installed it in easy mode, just ctrl+alt+t to get to a terminal and then type su and your away!

I downloaded the latest jre from sun.com and installed it as per their instructions. then  re-installed freemind and it worked. java --version still says its the old one but it appears to have got it working. download the self-extracting binary for java 6

http://www.java.com/en/download/linux_m … ava.com:80

and follow their instructions.

To load from easy mode just use the terminal, as I have no idea how to create new icons in easy mode!

GEPETO - that was the error message I got until I updated my java. Had a few minor problems but it all worked ok in the end.

If your java install fails (around the point the screen says: creating rt.jar ERROR!!!) or something similar, you need to move the java6u3*.bin file to somewhere like /home/user and then run the install again. It will then work fine, and create a folder called java1.6* which you copy to /usr/local.

At this point it might work, depending how well you managed to install java. I had problems, but that's because I'm a muppet. If a muppet can do it, so can you!

So... the slightly trickier bit...

freemind is pretty particular about which version of java it uses (why can't it all be simple, like me?) and for some reason the freemind code does not point to the right place on our linux system. with a simple addition of one line (I used vi, and destroyed the file several times before I worked out how to use the damn program, how cool is vi though eh?)

I am sure there is a more... elegant.. bit of code for this purpose, but I have no idea what I am doing. this seemed to work, so copy this and then tell me i'm fantastic when freemind starts up:

1/ open up /usr/share/freemind/freemind.sh in your favourite text editor. You might want to move this file (mv in console) to your /home/user to edit, and then mv back to its proper location when finished... just a thought.
2/ locate the method findjava( )    <-- you can search for 'findjava' although its pretty obvious.
3/ stick your cursor at the end of the method, where it says:

Code:

            fi
fi

4/ type in the following line

Code:

JAVACMD=/usr/local/jre1.6.0_03/bin/java

it should look like this
http://i12.tinypic.com/6tncoxk.png
5/ and then move freemind.sh back to its original place and

Code:

chmod a+x /usr/share/freemind/freemind.sh

and your done! start freemind

Without the java update, it gives me the error message in console, and just won't load properly in easy mode (easy mode with start menu added).

If you still get trouble, I'll try and list exactly what I did. I know how frustrating it is trying to get something to work... computers - there is always some hidden button or option somewhere that has nothing to do with what you are trying to achieve, but will cause problems if not pressed!

anyway, thats a long post for me and i can only hope it is of some use to someone!

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

IT WORKED!

I followed joe's instructions and now Freemind is running just fine. The java installation worked flawless and for freemind I just unpacked the zip downloaded from their website.

Thanks to everybody that tried to help and joe probably it would be useful to have a reference to your instructions from the list of applications.

In the end I think the error has to do with how java is installed by default on Eee PC.

I guess good old manual solutions give always best results.

Hey, glad all that typing wasn't in vain!

Just wondering, what do you mean by that bit I have quoted above?
It looks to me as though you managed it more easily than I did!

I used to wonder why people bothered with these forums, but it actually feels quite good to know that I have been of some use! wink

Au revoir!

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Hi joe,

I'm talking about the list located here (Applications tested on Eee PC).

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/list:othersoftware

Some of the applications have indicated there is a guide how to do it. Freemind does not have one. As simple as it looks now after I did it, it was not like that before when I tried to use the exiting installation of java. Your steps could be very well what is necessary for a guide.

These guides are very useful. I guess I'm not the only one using Linux for the first time. I have pretty extensive knowledge about windows and some limited about linux (I had Ubuntu installed on vmware for a long time but never spent time to learn much about it).

Thanks again.

There is a old version of FreeMind, version 0.7.1, that makes part of hte Debian repository. I had installed that version through synaptic, but I want to upgrade it to the version 0.9.0. Any idea how to do it?

You can find freemind (stable version) packaged especially for EEE/Xandros:
http://ftp.linux.hr/asuseee/xandros/binary/

If you want to add repository follow these instructions:

Re: Need help to install Freemind on the default OS?

Didn't have any problems installing Freemind in Easy Mode (I have got Advanced mode enabled but am not using it at present).

I used pimpmyeee as documented in the wiki to update the repositories and then used:
sudo apt-get install freemind and it just worked.

Hope this is of some help.
