Ok, so I noticed my 1000H was getting a bit warm on the bottom after putting a 7200RPM drive in it.
So I checked the vents on the bottom, not getting any airflow out.
After removing the bottom cover, the silver "shield" that is in there completely covers the vents for the HD.
So after cutting away the material covering the vents, my HD temps are alot happier.
Next thing is to maybe place a small sheet of copper on the HD... I'll report back later on how/if that works.

what's the performance change like?
and do you still have the 1 sec tick and flash from the drive light

Performance from the 5400 drive? I never ran the stock drive in it...
Well, the tick is subjective, I have sidebar gadgets monitoring software health and I notice a blink every once in a while.
Sometimes every second or two, sometimes not for 5-10 seconds.

naw this is a repetitive 'knawing at yer soul' tick tick tick ![]()
near enough (just timed roughly for 15secs, 15/16 ticks) 1 a second
ah shame you didn't experience the 5400 speed so you could compare
never mind ![]()

I thought the power draw from a 7200RPM drive is much higher than a 5400RPM drive, and will definitely create more heat. Battery life will decrease significantly from the 7200RPM unless you can find me one that has a continuous amp draw of 500mA or less.
Offline
THe draw is 2X that of the stock drive, but that's what I had laying around.
I plan on getting one closer to the voltages of the stock one.
More heat or not, cutting the material that was covering my vents made a big difference.

Please let me know where I can get that copper sheet also. I am interested using a copper sheet and some thermal paste to help cool the bottom also.
Thanks.

next best thing is ally and probably easier to source ![]()

The cooling fan only blows air out the left side.
The vent on the front side of the cover is there to draw air in and over the HDD and out the side. By removing the metal
covering the air is now drawn in, crosses over the end of the HDD and exits as before. I don't think it was a good idea and
the consequences may not be known right away.

I'm curious as to what may be compromised by removing the metal shield.
Offline
I did this modification myself but i didn't remove the whole metal shield, i just cut off the piece that was blocking the vent holes on that panel. It helps, it used to heat up a bit but after the modification it brought my temp down really well specially when you put a load on this little thing.
The metal shield helps distribute the heat like a cooper heatsink to bring the heat down but an extra vent hole for it to breathe will certainly not hurt either. Just my 2cents.

I had the same thing... I finally figured out it was caused by MobileMeter sampling the HD every second for reporting the HD temp.
I disabled that option in MobileMeter, and it has stopped.

I've been custom cooling PCs for over a decade, and know very well how airflow works.
My CPU temps have dropped by an insignificant amount, but my HD stays on average 5 degrees Celsuis cooler.
If heat ever becomes an issue, and I doubt it will, it will be time to do a custom cooling setup for this little bugger.
j1huynh, You can usually get copper sheets at a hobby or craft store, maybe even some hardware stores.

Who knows. I'm sure there is a reason. Asus didn't put it there just because they had some extra laying around.

RF shield most probably.

I cut out the vent at the bottom and have found some interesting things. It seems my HD temp has gone down some, but the system temp seems to be afected much much more. My system temp was at worst 60c+, now it's 45 under load while I am playing an mp3, listening to an itunes podcast and doing a spybot scan all at the same time
..... Oh and typing this in Firefox :p
My hd and Cpu is stuck at 50c, so that's nice for a laptop i guess, i can see many destop PCs frying under that load, but for a laptop it seems pretty good.
/PS It's spring in Australia at the moment and I have no Aircon on and the ambient temp is 22c, though thats taken off a alarmclock. ![]()
Will have to see what the temps do If i take the bottom cover of completley.
Bye.

I just cut off the sheilding over the vent, I think my hdd spin noise is a lot more noticeable now...
that sheild is also a bit of a sound dampener I think.
Offline
could you post a picture of what you cut ?
Offline
This shows the vent holes from the out side.
This shows where I cut the foil. I just used an exactoknife/razor. I cut off quite a bit more than needed as you can see.
Sorry for any grainy/blurriness, blame my eee's webcam and subpar lighting for that.

I'm glad to see that this is working out for more than just myself! ![]()

Why would this make the HDD noisier?

i just tried it, and damn it does signifigantly lower the temp of the entire eee. less heat, less fan on , less noise! props for you guys (:

Because there is less materiel for sound dampening. It does not make the drive itself louder but allows more of the sound to escape so it sounds louder.
And yes you will hear it more as a few people already stated that did the mod.
Toss a nice quiet WD Scorpio 5400rpm drive with AAM in there and it should not be a issue, I could barly hear my 250gb WD drive when I held it up to my ear with no case on it.
