World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

You heard correctly ladies and gents!

My current configuration is as such: Windows XP on the 8GB (faster) SSD drive and everything else (read: World of Warcraft) on the 32 GB SSD drive.

Make sure you install your graphics drivers and use SUPER PERFORMANCE mode. I have not done any overclocking or any other special modifications, I simply installed mostly everything from the ASUS Eee 1000 XP support cd (copied it to an SD card), and then installed World of Warcraft.

Some may be wondering how to install without a CD-ROM drive. Easy! If you have the CD version, you can either use a CD drive via network (sharing) or copy the CDs to an SD card or USB flash drive with enough storage. There is a caveat that I will mention here, if you do copy the files, make sure they are ALL on the drive at once, not copying half and then waiting until it says insert CD XX and then copying it over and reinserting, this won't work -- I tried, it doesn't recognize it.

Basically, copy ALL the files from CD 1 (including the DirectX folder) to the SD card or USB drive. Next, copy ONLY the Installer Tome files from the remaining CDs so that you have all four Installer Tomes on your external storage. Then run the installer and repeat this process for Burning Crusade. Have fun patching (or copy the patches from your other machine to the USB drive as well)!

It runs pretty well, you might want to turn most of the stuff down and triple buffering ON. Some options in the game HELP performance (like triple buffering), so make sure you check every option carefully. I run it 1024x600 (wide) fullscreen and mostly every option is all the way down except spell detail.

It is a little sluggish however it is very 'smooth' in the way that it is sluggish. If you play it, you'll know what I mean. It doesn't hiccup and have periods of being unresponsive, it is always the same 'lag' you feel. I play a priest and was healing a 5man with no problems and able to run through zones like Shattrath and Undercity without bumping into every wall so it is definitely passable.

Another nice aspect is that if you alt-tab out (or switch windows) it doesn't hiccup at all switching tasks. You can alt-tab back and it will be responsive again without a whole 'reinitializing' type of delay that some may be familiar with. That I really like, as sometimes I want to check something on WoWWiki or whatever and I can do that, going back and forth, without zero-to-little delay. Amazing!

It may not be passable for huge raids with 20 or more, but it is definitely able to provide you with your mobile WoW fix. wink

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

Standard 1GB RAM?

I might "port" it on my 901 but think the keyboard will be a total pain in the behind (in a keybind/macro **** really; can't stand clickers)...

Also, Shat? How you do that? It even lags on my (2years old) gaming desktop with 2gig RAM.

And as final: could you post some FPS's you'd get at various locations:

a BG, 3v3 Arena (?), Org, Shat and some outside outlands places. Thanks.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

Yeah, standard 1 GB RAM.

I haven't used the 901, so I can't say how it might be but the 1000 is pretty easy usually. For me mostly it's just flash heal (#4), greater heal (#6), or renew (#7)... maybe a PW:Shield (#9) if necessary so its pretty easy to keep my hand on the middle of the number row. I admit, clicking is a pain, opening trade windows and stuff without a mouse is ugh.

The FPS seem to be almost the same no matter where I go except in places like Shat and huge huge populated areas. They are never unbearable though, maybe a little more sluggish but I can manage to wade through it. In quiet places it's not bad. It always seems to report 8-12 but I think it's getting more or less sometimes. It doesn't feel that sluggish as far as input response time and such. It's kind of interesting how it seems to balance it.

For example, I might see players update at around 8-12 FPS on my screen, but the mouse and keyboard respond instantly. If I select a party member and cast a spell, it's instant and displays. Combat is definitely passable, while maybe not what many are used to on their desktop, for a mini netbook with an onboard Intel graphics chipset and power-sipping CPU, it definitely runs the game smooth enough. I ran about 6 instances in the last 3 days with my brother, friends and roommates and not once did I have a moment where I went "damnit, if it wasn't for that lag I could have saved them!" or any close moments like that. Everything went just fine and none of them complained about my ability to keep them alive in our 5man BC instances. Take that how you will.

I'll try a BG sometime this week, might be a little busy to get to play in the next day or so but I'll try my best. I'll make the assumption that if it runs ok in a BG, then 3v3 should definitely be fine. Shat and Outland run just fine, about 8-12 FPS like normal. Undercity seems to be 10+ maybe even 15 at times if I am in a good spot. Nothing hard to walk through or interact with, you just have to get used to not seeing a completely smooth frame by frame transition.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

WoW runs great on my 1000H with 2GB RAM. Shattrath is a little sluggish, but reasonable. Framerates aren't great, but very playable (for me, anyway).

My son and I have been leveling with the new refer-a-friend program. I play on my desktop and he plays on my 1000H. Got to level 41 so far, so it's very reasonable for play. I also have installed tons of interface mods on it without significant slowdown. We've done a few instances on it and numerous battlegrounds.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

I just put my WoW folder on a USB and started running it on my 901. Overall framerate seems 8-13. Not that bright, but not that bad either. I toned it down to 800 x 600 though, 1024 x 600 gave 5 FPS... (both with everything tuned down , expept spell detail => for consacration smile)

Going to upgrade to 2gig RAM soon though, so i expect a performance boost to 15-20 FPS. Thats more playable.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

With a few WoW sys tweaks and 3d-analyze.

I have about 25 in FPS while questing and such. But while in Stormwind and inside Shattrath, it degreases to about 13-16.. hmm

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

A lot of people at the moment of testing. But around lunch time, the framerate in Stormwind in the Trade District goes to around 21-22. And inside the bank, 35 /lol.

But remember I use a 701.

With a processor running overclocked at 900Mhz.

I think it's quite an impressive result smile

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

That IS impressive. Wow. I don't even get 35 on my desktop. Of course, most of the time when I'm in the bank in Stormwind, I'm trying to gank everything that's red to me and avoiding the guards, which usually keeps me too busy to look at the frame rate. Best way to avoid the guards there is die near the bank and rez on the top platform, way above the auctions. Loads of fun. You still don't last too long, tho, and the GY is SO FAR AWAY. LOL.

Well, great to hear an objective analysis on this thanks guys. I get my eee tomorrow, installing wow will be the first thing I do. Just for emergencies... I don't think the framerate will be adequate for a frost mage in arena sad

Could be, lawdy. I don't do arenas, nor do I play mages, so I can't advise on that. I prefer battleground PvP.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

Mine there in the picture is a 1000h, only thing modified is it has 2gb of ram. The framerate in nagrand there was about 16-17 fps, which sounds bad but it was extremely stable. As in, it was constantly that framerate due to graphic limitations. There was no freezing, no actual lag, the mouse moved at full speed etc.

Shattrath got 3 fps but even that was playable as long as you dont spend long there. It certainly works good enough to do anything but arena or 25 mans.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

Hi there, new to this forum. smile Really interested in this topic as would love to play some light wow on my future eee (potentially either a 901 or 1000h). Got a friend who has a 1000h, so looking to try it first on there but was wondering -- what would the ideal settings on 3d-analyze be? All those checkboxes intimidate me >_<. So any guidance would really help, thank you so much.

@Johanferrari -- how on earth do you get such good framerates on your eee for wow? Any pointers would really help, as this is my current unit too. smile

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

Allright guys. I've taken some screenshots while playing to prove/show my framerate.

For this example, I've only modified the config file and lowered the graphics aswell as a custom macro used in-game to improve even more.

First off, my rogue questing in Stranglethorn Vale.

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/4667/wowscrnshot083108220529ms7.jpg

34 FPS

This is my rogue in Stormwind, not in the intense quaters.

http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/6940/wowscrnshot081308001516cm0.jpg

30 FPS

This is in the more intense parts of Stormwind.

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/8273/wowscrnshot083108221707vs0.jpg

20 FPS

And finaly in the bank,

http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3672/wowscrnshot083108221850sa2.jpg

43 FPS

How?

Edit your config file inside the "WTF" folder.

With this configured, your World of Warcraft will run great. And the text is FULLY readable and the graphics looks completly fine.

Good luck!

And yes, it's a private server smile

I took screenshots cause my camera won't focus on the computer screen.

Glad you like the "mini-guide".
At the moment, I am not runing 3D-analyser at all. Running so great without it so I don't need it.

No, you can mess around with it as much as you want. And if you mess it up totally, just use the repair feature. So you can play around with it as much as you like. Besides from using the repair utility, you can just simply delete the contents in the "WTF-folder" though this works as a cache to remeber your settings and your realms.

Good luck guys smile

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

Johan, I used your exact config on my 1000h on super performance mode, only changing the server data and choosing enGB instead of enUS, and I tried your macro.

Running around elwynn got me about 19-25fps, but outside stormwind bank where it's busy I got about 12 max. This is quite an improvement so thanks- but not quite the fps you're getting smile I think your fps has to do with you playing on a private server, less models to load.

Re: World of Warcraft - Playable on Eee 1000

No, the models are the same. The only thing is that the cities may not be as populated as on a "real server". In fact there is even be more models to load on a private server due to the custom vendors and special areas. Cause I achive the same/higher framerates
on my Paladin on Stormscale while farming.

I'm running on "stock-clock" which is 900 Mhz. And the factory amount of RAM which is 512MB. The thing that might change the FPS is my custom drivers made by Lazertag. A lot of people claiming it to improve performance as well as it helps downscaling to 800x480. But my Windows version is VERY tweaked and I keep the nessecary processes running aswell as REG tweaks, regulary defrag and keep'in it clean and smooth.

Adjust the brightness and THE MOST IMPORTANT: Set the sight level distance to the lowest though this is THE most requiring graphic process.

Good luck, once again!
