Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

I wouldn't say I cracked it.

Got mine yesterday, followed instructions from the forums here and within an hour of getting everything back together, touchscreen was unresponsive. Took it all apart and it was CRACKED! My guess is it cracked when I closed it after regular use.

I'm wondering how FidoDido installs these thing on the 900s he's selling with the screen preinstalled and if any of those have cracked yet.

Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

I got my touchpanel last week, prefitted it on top of the bezeland it worked great, so yester day i fitted it using kapton tape to hold it in place and only lightly tightened the screws, no problems yet, and i hope there wont be any.

It is a Touch Screen that you need to avoid touching it!

Does anybody think the 1.4 mm touchscreens will be more durable than the 1 mm?

nope, if it's indeed that size, then for sure there would be a bulge

I ordered the UK-hitek touchscreen kit, which says it's 1.4 mm.  I guess we'll see how it works out.

the replacement TS just arrived (super fast shipping from fido, less than a week!) but I'm not planning on installing it just yet as the cracked one is still holding up and stayed calibrated for a week now.

any update? is thicker more durable?

i plan to mount it in a car so the touchscreen must be able to take the vibration

Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

Damn it! my touchscreens just cracked. sad
Ive had a week of no problems at all and now, leaving it to go pick of my father from work it has cracked in the mean time!
Fortunetly it still responds around the crack, because ist located at the buttom right cornerand extends around 6mm into the screen area, just over the start menu.
I just hope its doesnt stop responding or the crack worsens.

If it stops working then  i am getting a 1.4mm panel instead of Fido's 1mm "cracker"

I think someone needs to create a modified bezel that has more space.  I'd buy it.

Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

please cancel my "not yet" vote. wink
I have found a crack on mine.panel still works exactly as before(calibration issues with every possible driver) but i took it off and i'm happy without it now.
I have been extremelly careful and i didn't like the feeling of having an almost indestructible UMPC with a very fragile touchscreen.
Personal opinion:the 1mm touchscreen WILL crack sooner or later.
The only solution is to create a protective bezel around it so the lid doesn't touch it at all

Or to shave enough of the inside of the screen bezel so that it doesnt press on the toouchscreen, another suggestion would be to mount thin washers on the screws inside the bezel, so to press the bezel outwards, or completely lose the buttom screws, removing the preassure they cause, since almost all the cracks happen in the buttom edge of the panel.

Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

coninsan Sorry to hear that .. mine still no cracks but useless .. I need to calibrate every 2 minutes!!  I thought of the washers and I created some out of 4 layers of electrical tape rounded and with a whole for the screws .. inserted them .. installed the bezel leave the bezel loose but same S##t

I couldnt close the bezel from the right hand side as it wouldn't click .. So I took them off again ..

Checked again my TS no cracks .. install the bezel and left the scresw loose especially the lower ones .. the bezel is still not clicking closed from the right side so I had to use again a tiny drop of glue.

Currently I loose calibration every 2 minutes sometime less ..  This modd is a waste of time and money .. If it doesnt crack it doesnt calibrate so whats the use of it?

beside, and to be frank I didnt find it fun as I am used on the mouse pad. Touch Screen need a tablet kind of a laptop to be really usefull.

The only fun I had is that I did that modd!

Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

Thanks for the mentality Heartbeat, and i agree with you that thin mod is deffinetly getting annoying,  and doesnt look worth doing if it cracks no matter what.

Only real solution, in my mind, would be that someone finds a plasic 8.9" panel that has same transparency as glas, or the 1.4mm panels just dont crack under any surcomstances.

I envy the 700 folks, only having to worry about cosmetical bulging.

I think we should (by we i mean me, coninsan, and heartbeat) wait it out.. let everyone else get the touch screens.. break it.. feedback to fido.. until we get a good touch screen.

*joke*

Re: Did you crack your touch panel from Fido? (900/901)

Eee 901 got TS yesterday and within four hours of tinkering had it cracked. Found when putting the faceplate back on it does not fully clip into place right around. I had to, with hesitance, put a little pressure on the edges to clip back into place and by doing so this is what cracked my screen, not the screws. *Sigh* Oh well, at least I got a thorough look of my Eee's internals for future mods.. Hmmmm...
