This is probably a question more for the sun forum but they're not responding...
The spellcheck function doesn't seem to work at all...
Tool - Options - Language Setting - Languages... are all set to English (USA)
but no errors are being auto-detected and when spellcheck is initiated it returns no errors (and I'm definitely spelling things wrong)
When I hit F7 (or the spellcheck button) the spellcheck window pops up the Dictionary Language box is empty,
however the "Continue checking at beginning" / "Spellcheck is complete" pop-ups prevent me from trying to set it...
is it possible that StarOffice was installed w/out any dictionary?
if so where do I get one / how do I install?

oh btw...
it's an
eee 1000 ssd
that I'm wrestling with

You have the major problem reported with installing OpenOffice. It seems installing the program doesn't install the dictionaries, and the process to follow to do that is extremely hard to work through.
I've tried a number of times to get the dictionaries installed and never succeeded. It seems crazy that the program doesn't do this as a process, as most other office programs do it easily.
I doubt you'll get much joy here at the moment. I'd suggest you try the Ubuntu Linux Forum and do a search for installing OOo Dictionaries. That will give you the process, and I wish you every success. If by any chance you get the install instructions to work, could you come back here and tell us all how you did it?

this issue was already a item. i found this
1. On your EEE, open Documents (OpenOffice Writer)
2. File > Wizards > Install new dictionaries
3. Click on the language you want
4. Click on "Start DicOOo"
5. Follow the on-screen instructions

starOffice Wizard dosen't have the language option...
next will install OpenOffice and see how that turns out...
thanks for the advice, will post how it goes...

I have a new Linux 900 and the spell check works fine in Open Office Writer. Dictionaries seem to be installed. It's possible that I installed dictionaries through TweakEEE or something....don't remember.
Edit: I DO remember, I "updated" dictionaries through the Settings tab, Add/Remove programs!

OK
Got it Working... well sort of...
dunno about the 700 - 901's but the 1000 Linux models come with StarOffice rather than OpenOffice as the word/spreadsheet/etc default... and after banging my head against StarOffice for two days...
Here's what I did:
First off I totally removed StarOffice (it seems to be from 2005 anyway)...
go into synaptic, chose the installed filter and find all the mentions of StarOffice, right-click and mark them for total removal... Apply and close Syaptic
next...
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install openoffice.org
(without the --fix-missing it errored out because of trouble accessing the asus updates)
once that's finished open open office...
oowriter
now, as pebra51 so awesomely found
1. On your EEE, open Documents (OpenOffice Writer)
2. File > Wizards > Install new dictionaries
3. Click on the language you want
4. Click on "Start DicOOo"
5. Follow the on-screen instructions
and it totally all works fine...
on a side note... I got this working in advanced mode... not totally sure of this but my guess is that in order for writer (openOffice or StarOffice) to work in advanced mode you have to enable advanced mode FIRST and then install a fresh copy of writer... this is just a guess though, but it's working for me...
thanks to everyone who chimed in...

Well, thanks for letting me know I'm not alone. I made the mistake of calling the Asus tech support because StarOffice would not spell check and they had me reinstall the OS - which, as you obviously know - did not help. Next step - RMA - really - they wanted me to send it back so they could send a remanufactured unit to me. Ouch. I declined because they seemed to have no aptitude for problem solving.
Tried installing Openoffice with Synaptic but can't figure out how to fire the darned thing up. In terminal openoffice, oowriter do nothing. Learning new things is always a bit painful, and I'm only about a week into it, but cheese whiz, I thought the command prompt was diagnosed in terminal condition in 1984 when the Mac came out, and that it had died in 1997. A decade later, it's extracting vengeance on me!!!
And why the heck did Asus do Xandros and StarOffice anyway? Seems that other distributions of Linux are much more friendly and OpenOffice would be better for us? (gee, this looks alot like a gripe)
Can anyone help this old dog open openoffice on Xandros? Please?

I just checked my K Menu for this on my main box running Kubuntu. Try running this;
ooffice -writer
And if you need any of the other OpenOffice.org apps, these are the commands you'll need;
ooffice -draw
ooffice -impress
And;
ooffice -calc
(They aren't what I would have expected.
)

Thanks Sage. But "ooffice -writer" is no joy in Xandros land. And just to be certain that is wasn't a typo no-go, I did the shift/insert trick after coping your code. Yes, it's frustrating, but not any more than learning Japanese. 送终克己奉公!!!

Humm - perhaps my install of open office did not work.
The following errors in Synaptic PM:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/openoffice.org-common_2.0.4.dfsg.2-7etch2eeepc2_all.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/soffice', which is also in package staroffice-desktop-integration
I uninstalled StarOffice but reinstalled it after failing to figure out how to open OpenOffice. I feel dense, like lead.

you're in the same bind I was in....
uninstall StarOffice again...
and then from the terminal line you should be able to download and install open office by typing
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install openoffice.org
check with oowriter or look in your Application-->Office folder
then you have to use the Language install under File-->Wizards to install english

You made my day, Kay!
It works, just the way you said it would. Linux gods appeased and the MSFT devil thwarted yet another day.
Sorry Sage, my bad - I had already uninstalled OO before running your commands. Perhaps the result I got is precisely what you would expect?

hey all thank you so much Kay_tarro.
i got the same problem. followed all your steps and got it working and i have to say openoffice looks better then then star office.
Offline
Here's how I solved the original problem (Spellcheck on Staroffice 8).
Get the DicOOo wizard from http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/ … DicOOo.sxw
and then enable macros in Tools -> Options -> StarOffice Security -> Macro Security...
Open sxw file and download Spellcheckers (and Hyphenators and Thesauruses). Then restart StarOffice.
Worked very nice for me. Hope for you, too.

simong's method worked flawlessly on staroffice. No need to re-install...
Big thank you! Made my day ![]()

You can install different dictionaries manually.
I don't have my Eee with me at the moment but will explain how to do it sometime next week.

Simong's method works perfectly, thank you so much.
It's amazing how many typos (*cough* spelling mistakes) I'd made in the couple of days typing without the aid of a spell checker. I don't think my English teacher would have appreciated me handing in my coursework in the state it was in ![]()

Just got an Eee PC 1000 Linux and am struggling with this issue of missing dictionaries/spellcheckers in the default Staroffice installation.
I tried the method outlined above by simong but when I restarted SO everything was the same -- no sign of the dictionaries I'd just installed.
I ran the macro as user -- the administrator option within the dictionary wizard was greyed out. Would that have caused a problem?
I am also stumped as to how to update Staroffice, which I thought might help here. I downloaded the JAR file update from Sun and unzipped it. In file manager (administrator) I navigated to the folder containing the unzipped files. I opened a console and typed sudo ./setup, but then I got the message back:
Searching for the staroffice installation ...
./setup: line 14: rpm: command not found
staroffice is not installed
Am I overlooking something obvious? If I could just get SO updated and working with the right dictionaries, that would be preferable to me than starting over with OpenOffice.
Thanks in advance for any help.

OK, Here's the way I fixed this wrinkle.
First go here: Ooo Dictionaries Download
Download and unzip the packages you want.
So for UK English you want, UK Spelling, Hyphenation and Thesaurus.
Then go to the File Manager and in My Home, right click and check the Show Hidden Files box.
Navigate to: .staroffice8 / User / Wordbook. And then copy the files to there.
Open Star Office Writer and from the tools option you'll see UK English as an option in the Language section.
N.B. You'll only see the Star Office folder if you opened the program.
If you can't see it then open one of the Office applications and go through the first time set up.
Hope this helps.

Thanks hotspot for the fast and helpful reply.
I can indeed now see and use the GB English writing tools within SO.
(Now if only I could get it to remember that the default language for new documents should be GB, not USA, English... ;-))

Open a new document, set the language (and all other properties that you want to be the default for your documents, like font, margins, paper size, etc.) and save the document as template. (See File menu).

Thanks RonaldP, but the problem I was having was with SO not remembering the options-language settings-languages-default language for documents-Western settings, rather than with any specific document or template.
However that problem seems not to be happening today!
Thanks anyway though.

Nice one - now I've got spell checking
Only one problem though - still no thesaurus:(
I've done the above and now there's two files - th_en_US_v2.idx and thes_en_US_v2.dat - in the wordbook folder, but thesaurus is greyed out in the tools/language menu. Any ideas?
