This is from a previous post, from "tamlaras". I did it and it worked, got the file manager icon back:
you can create the missing eeepc-file-manager-helper.sh as follows :-
start a terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+t).
sudo nano /opt/xandros/bin/eeepc-file-manager-helper.sh
Enter the following two lines.
#! /bin/sh
/usr/bin/XandrosFileManager
Ctrl+O to write the file out, followed by return to accept the filename
Ctrl+X to exit
sudo chmod 755 /opt/xandros/bin/eeepc-file-manager-helper.sh
exit
Reboot the eee and filemanager should be back.

To restore without a DVD drive, try a F9 Restore, and if that fails, a USB Restore.

Are you kidding?!? Why, without that F9 feature I wouldn't have a new computer every other weekend! ![]()

@winotree
Hee,hee...good one...same here...only I use Acronis True Image more often than I've used F9. :-)

had the same problem with my (arrived yesterday) new 901.
Spent hours looking through the forum, trying different "solutions" but none worked.
Managed to bring up icon but clicking on it did nothing.
Eventually managed to do it this way:
Use the Synaptic Package Manager (thanks Sage_Harpuia)
First of all make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Then press CTRL, ALT, and T. This will bring up the terminal window. Then, type sudo synaptic, and hit enter. This will load Synaptic. Click on the Search icon, this will bring the small Find window. Type file manager and click Search. Scroll down the list on the right (under Package) till you find "xandros-file-manager-helper. Double-click on it. Should now be highlighted in blue. Click on the little square before the name and click on "Mark for installation". You now get a Warning window, click on Mark (bottom right corner). Now click on Apply icon (the one with a green tick). Click on "To be installed" then Apply (bottom right corner). The file should now get installed (only takes seconds).
Close everything down and restart your eee PC.
This worked for me. The File Manager should appear in the Work section.
Hope that helps.
Otherwise, the File manager is always accessible through plugging in a USB drive (or inserting a SD card I believe) but obviously not a real solution as you want to be able to access your files from the Desktop.
Voila!
Worked a treat. Cheers martine49uk

I've had the same problem with the missing file manager. Thanks for all the excellent advice above, which I'm about to try. Think I'll go for pressing F9 as the alternatives require some kind of computer science degree.
I just want to say that I take back all my years of cursing Bill Gates. This is the most shambolic, amateurish, frustrating pile of steaming wotsits I've ever come across. I thought using computers was meant to add to productivity, not subtract days from my all to short life trying to open a document. It would be quicker to take up a quill!

For adding, editing and deleting simple mode icons, EmEditor works well, and now works on the 1000. The Absolute Beginner section of the WIKI describes how to install it.
If you have File Manager back, and don't want it again replaced by Web Storage, you may want to turn off automatic updates.

Please pass on any hints as to how to turn off automatic updates.

Two ways to access the update settings:
1. Right click the updates icon in the taskbar and choose Settings.
2. Click the Add/Remove Software icon and click the Preferences button in the lower left corner of the window.

Which models auto update? Is it possible in synaptic to disable the ASUS repositories and would this turn off the unwanted "feature" auto-update?
I found this post in the default Xandros section.
Recent silent (without notification) automatic updates by Asus on 901 and 1000 models apparently replace the file /var/lib/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc thereby indeed replacing personal customisations.
So it appears that ASUS is determined to get people to dislike linux by changing things while people are trying to learn and customize their eeepc!

Thanks plodr. That's a fair old thought, so I F9'd my 901 (yet again) while disconnected from the Internet. Checked my private copy of simpleui.rc was the same as the file in /opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher, and there are no differences. Edited /etc/apt/sources.list and commented out all three lines and saved the new file.
I then plugged in the network connection and waited for about 20 seconds for DHCP to kick in. Withing 5 seconds the router light was into overtime mode as the 901 proceeded to download for about 1 minute. When finished as the router was back to idle, I diff'ed simpleui.rc Asus just can't keep their hands off this file! It looks like most of the changes are just language variants but there is some changes to parcels like Web Mail and Google Docs to name but a few.
One more note in passing. The Update icon in the tray shows "There is (sic) no new updates available for your system.", but if you tab over to Settings -. Add/Remove Software still shows 3 updates. 901 Multi touch, Touchpad Patch to disable it while typing, and Asus Update System Update..."This update resolves several issues with the update system on the EeePC V1.6 based systems."
more if/when I find out more

This is really horrible topic to understand. So could please help me to give more information about this site.
It's a really horrible topic to try to research as ASUS keeps changing the rules, the user interface, the configuration files, the type and number of software updates offered, and the programs that install these updates.

The file manager always takes forever to load for me, are their any less intensive programs that I can use so that I don't have to wait for what seems like ages to open a manager?

Open a terminal and type in konqueror
Konqueror can also be used instead of the Xandros file manager. If you press F9, you will get a left pane. You can then click on the home icon or the red folder (root) to display a tree view of your files, similar to Xandros file manager.

Woah, I just found a super fast loading file manager. This is important to me cause as soon as I wanna find a file I start ripping through all my directories to find it.
I'll be using qwenview from now on :-)
Open terminal - ALT + CTRL + T Run gwenview - qwenview OR sudo gwenview

I have lost the File Manager three times in the 2 hours I've had the machine and although using the "sudo nano etc" method above restores the icon, it still won't open unless I do an F9 restore.
So far I am shocked at the shoddiness of the operating system on this machine as, without even doing anything, the File manager just disappears of its own accord.
Is there any way I can add Konqueror as a desktop icon?

Today - October 7, 2008 - Asus pushed out an update to my Eee 1000 that removed the File Manager from the "Work" tab on the Easy Interface.
The File Manager is still in /usr/bin, but there is no shortcut.

Watty 2000, if you are the owner of a 901 or 1000 model, unfortunately, ASUS is pushing out updates behind your back that will break things on your eeepc. Complain to ASUS.
Thankfully I own a 701 and they haven't tried that "feature" on this model.
I have a hard enough time figuring out linux without icons disappearing and tabs moving around!!!
