File Manager Missing

I just got my Linux 901 today, and its been working out great, except for one thing.

Now this may just be me being dense, but when i go to the Work tab, the file manager icon seems to be missing.

Is there anyway to fix this problem? Is there a way to enable it, or has it been moved somehow w/o me knowing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: File Manager Missing

Not sure where it's gone. But cntr+alt+t should bring up a terminal. Type

konqueror

and you have what, in effect, Eee cut down to get the file manager.

Re: File Manager Missing

I'm in the same b oat as the OP.

I figured out that you can also type XandrosFileManager in the terminal.

This however is an egregious bug. I want to give this OS a shot, but I dunno.

How quickly does ASUS typically fix this sort of thing?
How would I DL the updates?

Re: File Manager Missing

Ah thanks, I found File Manager under applications while using konqueror, is there anyway I can make it accessible from the desktop? Or do i just have to use konqueror to access files?

Re: File Manager Missing

Not really sure how the simple desktop works. There should be stuff on the Wiki about creating icons. I think the application is called something like XandrosFileManager ...... hang on, I'll check on the 701............yep, that's it.

If you're in advanced desktop, you can create a link to the application through the right click menu.

Did you run Asus' "Add/Remove Programs" application?

I hate to say this, but I don't think Asus do fix this sort of thing - they're usually the cause of it. Have you also run Asus' "Add/Remove Programs" item?

Yep. All I did was install the available BIOS updates.

Ok, that's the problem. However, I'm afraid I lack the experience with the default interface to tell you how to solve it. Fear not, though, because I know there are folks here who know how and will most likely drop in to explain all. smile

There is some advice worth giving here, though;

1: Don't ever touch Asus' Add/Remove Programs application. It unfortunately has bugs which cause the random loss of icons from the stock interface. tongue Since the stock interface was designed not to be customised by the user, this is difficult to fix. It's a bad bug that they shouldn't have missed.

2: Unless something has a security update made available, there is no reason to apply updates or upgrades at all on Linux-based systems. There's no need to try to fix what isn't broken. wink

3: NEVER touch the BIOS unless you're having hardware problems with a computer, and have been advised to do so by the manufacturer or someone similar as an absolute last resort. Asus are being very irresponsible by offering BIOS updates alongside standard software updates. If one goes wrong, or the BIOS update is interrupted by an unwitting or impatient user, you will end up with an unrecoverable paperweight (the BIOS, as I'm sure you know, is a low-level item that allows the computer to work at all: If it gets damaged, no more computer, end of story.). Luckily, this hasn't happened to you. However, for everyone's reference, I'll advise that this is something worth avoiding in the future, unless the circumstances are as described at the start of this paragraph. tongue

If you need to check for software updates, your best bet is to use the Synaptic Package Manager. To do this, press CTRL, ALT, and T. This will bring up a terminal window. Then, type sudo synaptic, and hit enter. This will load Synaptic, where you'll be able to add and update software as needed, without the problems of Asus' "Add/Remove" program.

Crazy.

I guess I'll try Advanced Desktop mode.

Re: File Manager Missing

I've been running through every conceivable part of my operating system since I started this thread, and besides confounding myself, the only thing I have succeeded in is adding programs to my computer that I do god only knows what, could someone please point me towards how to run the advanced desktop, because I give up.

Additionally, I may just try to restore to factory defaults and start over from there, but I don't have an external DVD drive and would like to avoid buying one.

Re: File Manager Missing

How to enable Advanced Desktop, curtesy of the wiki.

To restore without a DVD drive, try a F9 Restore, and if that fails, a USB Restore.

Hope this helps smile

Re: File Manager Missing

I found both of those things you posted on my own. Its a wonder what a little reading of the instruction manual and wiki can do. :-p

Thanks for your help, I am very relieved right now.

I'll be doing all of this tomorrow as its getting late. Fingers crossed

Couldn't resist trying, just did an F9 restore, all systems green, and what do you know, the File manager showed back up. I recommend you try this too shakey_snake it went really smoothly and only took a few moments.

Re: File Manager Missing

>>> I want to give this OS a shot, but I dunno.

Somewhere on the device will be a text file that determines where or if to display the icon to the filemanager.

The irony is, by the time you have ability to find that file you will no longer want the tabbed interface smile

You can install another distro on the Eee, just have a look around see what takes your fancy, but here are some ideas to find that file:

Search the wiki here.

ctrl+alt+t

grep -ri skype *

That will start chugging through files looking for skype (just an application that I think is on the tabbed interface, you can substitute for another).

From the results see if anything makes sense as file to hold the tabbed interface. If not then:

sudo su -
cd /etc
grep -ri skype *

That may show the file.

When / if you do find the file, then open it up in a text editor and copy a 'record' and change the values so they match.

Oh, and unix does move at speed, if you want the latest and greatest offerings then you need a distro that updates and that is not the default Asus one. The motto in opensource is release fast and often, the distros determine their own criteria for stability. So, I suppose I am saying don't judge Linux distros by what you have there, Asus are hopefully moving to Debian for future stuff, and the community has responded to the existence of the Eee and there are lots of howtos using other distros for the Eee.

I received a 1000 on monday. Same problem. Called asus technical support many times they said they had not heard of the problem and that they had no received any 901s or 1000s to look at. Can you believe it!

Re: File Manager Missing

OK, I've installed and am using fluxbox for a window manager.
This is much better than the tabbed interface.

Maybe I'll go all out and install Debian if Xandros continues to be a hassle, although I don't want to have to give up the quick boot times. sad

Re: File Manager Missing

The File Manager is not gone. Its icon is. wink Please press CTRL, ALT, and T at the same time once in order to bring up a terminal window, which will allow you to run the program. Once this window is open, type the following exactly (Linux is case and spelling sensitive);

Code:

XandrosFileManager

And then hit enter. This will open the File Manager.

Re: File Manager Missing

Now, how to get the File Manager icon?

I'm a noob, just got the 1000 a couple days ago, my first non-Mac machine. Everything was fine, but then I also went insane looking for the File Manager, while trying to safely eject a thumbdrive.

After finding this informative thread, I took my first tentative steps into the terminal and got File Manager that way. But I don't want to do this every time I need it.

Re: File Manager Missing

had the same problem with my (arrived yesterday) new 901.
Spent hours looking through the forum, trying different "solutions" but none worked.
Managed to bring up icon but clicking on it did nothing.

Eventually managed to do it this way:
Use the Synaptic Package Manager (thanks Sage_Harpuia)
First of all make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Then press CTRL, ALT, and T. This will bring up the terminal window. Then, type sudo synaptic, and hit enter. This will load Synaptic.  Click on the Search icon, this will bring the small Find window.  Type file manager and click Search.  Scroll down the list on the right (under Package) till you find "xandros-file-manager-helper.  Double-click on it.  Should now be highlighted in blue.  Click on the little square before the name and click on "Mark for installation".  You now get a Warning window, click on Mark (bottom right corner). Now click on Apply icon (the one with a green tick).  Click on "To be installed" then Apply (bottom right corner).  The file should now get installed (only takes seconds).

Close everything down and restart your eee PC.

This worked for me.  The File Manager should appear in the Work section.

Hope that helps.

Otherwise, the File manager is always accessible through plugging in a USB drive (or inserting a SD card I believe) but obviously not a real solution as you want to be able to access your files from the Desktop.

Voila!

Re: File Manager Missing

Hi,

My problem is sort of the same; last weekend I did an general update (update all) with the xandros package manager. Didn't think that it might not fit on my tiny HDD, so during the update my eeepc ran out of disk space and crashed.... Half updated/half old. I managed to get it to work again, but now my filemanager icon is gone and my desktop is frozen (no icons, no background, no action on right click).

This is not going to have an easy fix, does it? smile

Any idea how I can bring this back?

Davy

Re: File Manager Missing

@fresh08

If your desktop is freezing,  I would really recommend just to do an F9 restore if you have not made many changes to your EEE.

@batswag

To restore the File Manager icon,  you can do this:
To install software to create icons and tabs in Easy Mode for Easy Mode
1. with your browser go here:
http://www.3eportal.com/index.php?optio … ;Itemid=34
2. right click on  altools_0.4.3.deb and save it somewhere
3. Then go to File Manager (under Work tab) and find the file.
4. right click on the file and choose "install DEB file"
5. to start Launch Tools,  hit ctrl alt t,  type suieditor and hit enter
6. Create icons for Launcher Tools

To recreate your File Manager icon:
Under the Work tab, right click in SimpleUiEditor and choose New Program,  put in File Manager for name, browse for the file_manager_norm.png for an icon, put this in for the command: /usr/bin/XandrosFileManager -maximized
This should restore a working File Manager icon for you.
(You could also manually edit your simpleui.rc file but this is a way to do it all through a gui interface.)

Thanks, F9 restore worked great. Never used it before, because I am quite new at linux, but no troubles. file manager and Desktop are fully functional again and only took 30 min to update and add my other software and settings.

Re: File Manager Missing

I can empathize with the incredulity and frustration experienced by the numerous people who have reported to Xandros and/or Asus that their Xandros File Manager (XFM) has disappeared (as did my own) only to have Asus/Xandros say they have not heard of the problem. I have experienced far worse problems with the file managers in Microsoft Windows and other Unix/Linux distributions, so I'm inclined to give both Asus and Xandros a little slack. Certainly this was an annoying problem, but by no means was it a show-stopper.

All was well with my Eee 1000 until after I connected to a shared network directory. After several iterations of restoring the system via F9 I finally realized that XFM tends to disappear on the next reboot after it accesses any external directory or drive (network or USB) that is no longer accessible or immediately after certain updates or Add/Remove Software. I've had extremely good luck since I started following the advice of Sage_Harpuia to avoid updates or upgrades.

2008-08-23 UPDATE to my 2008-08-21 POST: What I failed to notice until tonight is that when I close the lid on my Eee 1000 the wireless connection turns off a few seconds later. Since I had a network drive mounted, that in turn makes XFM look bad for approximately 5 minutes while it experiences the TCP/IP error timeout--so I rescind my comment about external and network drives, as the problem was really caused by my wireless going off after I closed the lid.

There have been many good suggestions for how to fix the problem or replace XFM. Personally, I like XFM, so I wish to extend heartfelt thanks to martine49uk! I followed your instructions for using the Synaptic Package Manager and it permanently restored the XFM to my Work folder just fine (until my next update).
