Since it turned out newer 901s don't have ZIF, I thought of gathering model and revision info for future buyers (in case ZIF presence really depends on these numbers). If you don't see your Eee's model/revision (or beginning of serial number) in this list, please post.

Looks like serial doesn't mean anything (at least first 6 letters/numbers).

ZIF is a zero insertion force connector. Aside from other things it is used in 901s to connect 1.8" HDDs.

I bought this one yesterday from Micro Anvika in Harrods:
Model: EEEPC901-BK005X (12G, Black)
Rev: 901 12
Serial: 860AAQ
As already noted in the first post, this does have the ZIF (I opened and checked). At around 7:30PM they had 4 left, if you can get there quick enough, you may get lucky...

Has anyone bought their EEE 901 from newegg and it have the zif socket?
BTW, why are we calling this a ZIF socket? That's kind of a generic term as there are many different kinds of ZIF sockets. Processors use a type of ZIF socket, as do most data cables used in small electronics today. What is this interface actually? Some kind of mini IDE I would guess?

What's the "real" downside of not having ZIF?
Have Asus used an alternative type of connector which still allows adding a HDD, but needs a little more Force?

haha no, just empty solder points for us to look at and wish we could install a hdd. bust instead you want to use alot of force and slam the eee against the wall (EIF connector-extreme insertion force)

Awesome, thanks for the reply. I was hoping for SATA, but that's good to know.

it is pata, but u will be able to find the hard drives by searching for "zif hdd", or "1.8" hdd".
make sure the physical connector is a 40(?) pin ata zif connector.

I can find hard drive for PATA easily enough. I was hoping for a SATA port so I could wire up an eSATA connector.
Offline
the internal interface is PATA.. it has nothing to do with the actually connector.. it is a ZIF connector, search for ZIF 1.8" hdd or ssd.
Even Sata drives of this form factor have ZIF connectors.. so either way u could not use esata

I'm not concerned with the actual connector. If it was a SATA interface I could have built a convert cable to attach the SATA port to a bulk head eSATA connector. Can't do that with PATA as it doesn't accept most SATA commands and isn't hot swappable.
