Phoned up JB Hifi Sydney at the Strand in Pitt Street - Main Store a few minutes ago, JB does n't have it yet.
In one of the forums in whirlpool, according to one guy Myers opted to go straight to 1000 series instead of having to stock 901 series. Australia should be having a stock of 901 and 1000 as early first week of July according to rumors probably to counter act the arrival of MSI Wind. MSI Wind got bad start in Australia of their pricing Aus $700 for 3 cell battery (very greedy pricing!!!). I almost tempted to buy, no display in the release day to play around. I went to the store (onlinecomputer.com.au) to have a look. It was display in the glass cabinet, not allowed to touch to do your touch typing. Definately, not buying or considering the MSI Wind. IT IS GONE BY THE WIND!!! MSI folks does n't know how to market it. MSI give a lot of units the reviewers to review their product but the end the consumers got the final say to buy a product. I think the one of the criteria for buying another netbook now is feel and touch of the keyboard, after most of buyer this unit 10 inch screen and bigger keyboard. I for one got an eeepc 7 inch already but buying another one in which I can touch type.
Asus, Bring on the EeePC 1000 series in the Australia before 11 July - Iphone 3G release date. People may opted to buy EeePC 1000 instead of the Iphone 3G!
A$ 648 here
http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/
But it is A$698 in the actual paper catalogue in store (I went to one of the stores -chatswood store).
Now, the problem, would JB hifi honour the A$648 when you print the ad in there website?
If you are pre-ordering I advise you to printed the ad in http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/ before they deleted it. It is valid until 28 July.
Update: 901 and 1000 will be available by the end of the July in JB for sure.
I think Myers, the original sole distributor for first release of Eeepc 701, I think will not be left out for this device as well. Remember, 50 million Atom CPU's Asus have ordered for these netbooks. David Jones might get them as well before the end of the month.
Watch this shop, it seems that they have 901 already 616 at (old price???). Amazon got 399 for 901

It is availabe now at JB!
I got Eee PC 1000H from JB hifi last night in 500 George Street, Sydney (TGV Building) for A$648. They got 15 units of all Black, I think. I am the 7 or 9 according to the JB guy that serving me. All of them got it in full price according to him A$698. I have to convince 3 JB personnel that the one in the website (http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers) is sort of coupon, not online purchase. The 2 guys are easier to convince (the first and third guy), the lady is a bit typical "no" person. There are still probably 5 units remaining in the store. The tip that the units are in yesterday is from the Asus eee pc 10 inch in whirlpool forum.
Tips: In buying at $648 price, print the ads/coupon and remember where to click in website (http://www.jbhifi.com.au) in the "Computer and IT tab". JB have 5 websites, if you can NOT show to the JB guys where you can see the discount coupon, you will not get this price. Good luck. I think it is limited stock only.
These guys think that $648 price is expensive;

However, these guys are not

Like:
1. keyboard - can touch type now!
2. wireless card is N - stronger signal
3. No more NLiting nightmares to have XP on it (Installed already).
4. Battery is 6600 mAh (6 cell)
5. Multi-touch gestures - downloaded and installed ..3.07 driver (I think you have seen this gestures in youtube -901 and 1000)
Dislike:
1. the Shift key on the right hand side is small.
2. One stuck pixel in screen - blue one, not dead (dead is black according to some folks). 5 dead pixels can get a replacement from Asus. I hope it wake up one day. Massaging the screen did not help.
Appearance.
The top cover - screen portion has new Toshiba Sallelite finish. The units doesn't look cheap compare to previous Eee and even MSI Wind.
Plans:
Dual booting with Kubuntu
Specification for all Eee pc - Surf to 1000 SSD linux:

Hey NS, the new Eees have a glossy finish right? Does it smudge?

It smudge a bit, but you can wipe it with the micro fibre cloth that comes with the unit. The glossy finish only on the top cover of the screen and the handwrist portion, not the screen framing, not the keyboard and not on the back of the unit where vents are located.
It is exactly the same glossy finish as the new Toshiba Satellites unit - U400 and ?300 series. I am almost buy the U400 a few weeks ago but could not stand the glossy keyboard of the toshibas Satellites series. I think everybody see these new Toshiba Satellites series in Myers, DJ and JB. JB in Townhall /TGV opens until 8:00 PM Mondays to Wednesdays and got a unit to touch type and see yourself.
The new eee looks a real laptop now, not a toy. - MSI Wind still look like a toy among other laptop the display cabinet of onlinecomputer.com.au.

Like NS said it does look like a real laptop, until you compare it with real laptops; it's still a very small notebook. ![]()
I grabbed mine from JB on the Gold Coast, and blogged about the pricing difference and first impressions of the 1000H.
Needless to say I'm very happy I held off buying a Eee until now, smudges and all.

I went to a JB store today to ask whether they would carry the 1000 Linux version and the answer is unfortunately no
.
Now I have to look around for an Australian computer retailer who will preorder one for me. Anyone know of any?

I was after the Linux version, but for the price I figured why not. I'm in the process of formatting, then a small partition for XP (in case of dire, dire emergency) with OpenSUSE filling the other 95% of the hard drive. ![]()

I'm also after one of the eee 1000s running Linux. And I'm also happy I've waited. I went to JBHiFi to see the 1000 and it was much easier to type on than the earlier models and that is going to make it a heap more useful.
On availability, I rang JB when I saw they had the XP version in their catalogue and they told me that they hadn't got the Linux ones on their books at the moment but they might be getting them. They took my phone number and are going to get back to me. So I'm still hopeful.
And DJs said that they thought they could order one in for me but they also don't have them on their order forms at the moment so it's a maybe.
I think over the next month or so the stock will sort itself out and we will find out which suppliers will have the Linux models. If there is enough of a demand for them I expect more stores will choose to get them in.
On a lighter note, I was in a large department store recently looking at their eee collection (pre-1000) and they offered me a computer with XP on it. I said I wanted a Linux one and the sales assistant looked at me as though I had blasphemed. I think for some people the OS choices are Windows or Windows. ![]()

They must have deleted it - I checked the site and the ad now reads $698, same as the paper catalogue.

Yeah they fixed the price, although see my blog post (above) for a perhaps-legal-but-tempting workaround.

So does the exclusive deal with JB end on july 31 and we'll see 1000's everywhere come August 1st?

Harvey Norman in Fyshwick Canberra said they will have the 1000h in stock next week. I guess JB's exclusive ends shortly :-)
