Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

Hi there

I was just wondering if anyone else has been having this same problem. Now when my eee pc 900 is fully charged and i leave it for a couple of days not using it the battery still drains when even not in use.

Now i find this particulary annoying and frustrating as if we don't have enough problems with the "Replacement battery program" going on with asus and what a joke that is, now also got this problem with the eee pc 900 draining while completely switched off and not in use.

Has anyone one else had this problem and please let me know, does anyone one know how to solve this is it a "bios" problem or is it actually a fault with the eee 900?

Now if it is then that is another situation got to be put at asus as how can you have an UMPC that drains while completley switched off as that defets the object of having one that you can take on holiday with you or on a long journey as the battery will be drained if not attached to the mains every couple of days.

do you have anything inserted in the USB ports when you leave it switched off?

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

Tulisan no i have nothing attached to the usb ports. I do however always have the wi-fi switched on at all times even when i shut down the machine as i never turn off the wi-fi as i use my internet wirelessly. Now would that make a diffirence?

The system i use is linux xandros and i have the old bios version still which is 0302 version, so can does anyone else have this problem with the eee pc 900?

I don't think the wi-fi will cause it. This however is the first time I've heard it. Mine still has juice even it I don't use it for several days. I usually turn it off before I put it in its case.

I also doubt that the wifi would cause this but it is easy enough to check. Next time you are going to leave it for a few days, hit function F2 before you shut it down to turn off the wireless and see if it makes a difference.

Let us know as I am sure there are others, including myself, who do this.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

Thanks Tulisan and boatworker i will give that a go when i next use my eee pc 900 and switch off the wifi before i completley turn it off.

I am amazed your battery still keeps fully charged after several days Tulisan, as i checked my eee 900 today and i fully charged it on sunday and today i checked it and the battery was only half charged by the battery indicator.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

I have this issue with my eeePC900. I left it locked away for a few days on 100% and shutdown, and came back the next week and it was on 50%. Perhaps the shutdown state is not a total shutdown and something is still drawing current while it is off.

As pointed out the USB ports do stay powered on, so leaving any devices plugged in doesn't help.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

There was another post somewhat related to this. Someone suggested removing the battery. I tried it and didn't seem to work for me.

Anyway, I didn't have access to my eee for about 2 weeks and when I turned it it on today it was dead. So it IS draining for me as well. I know these things do drain even if turned off over time, but seems kind of short to me.

And now I am recharging it and after 2 hrs it's only 50%, Should it take that long?  When I first got my eee it took about 2 hours to charge to reach "full charge" status.

I have the 5800 battery for what that is worth.

Edit: btw: no usb devices, but not sure wifi was off.

From observation the 900 is slow to charge, it can take a good 3/4 hours from flat. I'll try and run some timing tests today If I get a chance.

.

It would be handy if you could mention how much powerdraw that is (mA)
You could measure that with a Mutlimeter.
Knowing how much mA's are drawn could maybe point you to what is drawing it.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

No time today to do any tests, but just to let you know I have a mains multimeter plugged between the ASUS PSU and the ring main. I plan to test the system with no battery, nothing plugged in, then add an USB device and look at the current draw. From some previous tests with the display brightness the current draw changed from 120mA to 160mA, from 0 to full using eeectl.

I just noticed the power drain on my pc900, I do leave the 8gb sd card in the slot but  l don't think that should drain the battery at all. Off is off not standby.

I asked Asus about this very issue on 6th June.  I was told their "R&D department" would give me an answer, but despite chasing it up, no answer has been forthcoming.

I asked the same question at around the same time and they asked me if i have the latest bios version, people with 0601 and 0704 still report that it doesnt fix that problem, the USB ports remain powered all the time

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

Take a look of this thread.  Under WinXP, the webcam is a USB device which continuously consumes power even the epc is switched off.  It thus prevents the CPU from going into deep sleep state (C3).  The workaround is to disable the "USB Composite Device" in the Device Manager screen of WinXP.

Could the webcam be the cause of your power-drain problem under Linux?

Well I chased it up again earlier, and got

"Dear Customer

Your case has been passed onto my colleague, will provide you with an update tomorrow.

Asus Support Team"

We'll see...

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

I'm having the same problem.
Fully charged Eee on Saturday, powered off, nothing else attached. Didn't touch it for 5 days. Powered on today and it's showing battery at 50%

Raised problem with Asus
First response was to tell me to upgrade the bios to extend battery life
After pointing out that I already had latest bios ...
Then received email telling me to complete RMA form

I'm not convinced they really understood that this was a different issue from the UK battery size issue, despite making it clear that this was about the battery discharging whilst the Eee was 'supposedly' turned off.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

Hi all

I checked my eee pc 900 today and i have not used it for 3 days now. The last time i used it i made sure i switched off the wi-fi just before i shut the whole system down and switched it off.

Now i have had a look today which is its 3rd day of not being used, wi-fi has been switched off by (fn) F2 and i had a look at the battery indicator and it was showing 90% charge remaining. Now that is better to what i had before as i always left my wi-fi on even when i went to shut down, but i do feel all this i have been reading there is a fault of the machine to keep draining battery life or the battery indicator does not show correct percentage.

I know this as a few people on this forum have mentioned that the battery indicator does show incorrect percentages, so you could have a full battery but the indicator shows 50%. Now i have bios version 0302 and i have the xandros linux system as well. I am also using the battery replacement programme to get a bigger battery which surprisingly i had a phone call today about sending my smaller battery back and sent me the address to send it to via e-mail, so i have taken that option to.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

The battery indicator is far from accurate but the fact that it shows much higher after the battery has been removed for a while than if it has been left in the machine proves that the machine draws power when switched off.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

I have noticed this as well, and my 900 is only two weeks old.

I think maybe testing 3 scenarios would help:
1) Charge it up to 100%, then switch it off for 24 hours, then turn it back on and check battery %.
2) Charge it up to 100%, disable all devices in the BIOS, then switch it off for 24 hours, then turn it back on and check battery %.  Note that this assumes that disabling the devices in the BIOS will actually turn them off.
3) Charge it up to 100%, then switch it off and remove the battery for 24 hours, then turn it back on and check battery %.
Maybe next week I'll be able to test this if no one else has figured it out by then.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

Just to update my previous post...

Started with fully charged battery

Left it switched off for a week (apart from powering up once to check battery status midweek - 50%)

1 week later , powered up  - battery meter showing 30%

I'm going to return to Asus as faulty. Power off should be power off without having to manually disable devices.

I'd be interested to know tho' if this is just some faulty machines or is everyone experiencing this.

Maybe because the battery life is so poor , more frequent users don't notice this because they are re-charging battery frequently.

Re: Power supply drains when eee 900 switched off?

My experience was very similar. There is a lot of power drain when the unit is 'switched off'. It appears to be a design fault.
