local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

Hello all,

I just have bought my EEE 900 and changed its UI language from Dutch into English with succes. Now I try to tweak the user interface in simplified mode following the instructions I found in the wiki  and on several other locations on the web.

I created a .AsusLauncher subdirectory (under /home/user) in which I copied the original simpleui.rc file. However, any changes made in the simpleui.rc file (big or small) do not seem to be showing up in the UI after restarting.

I double-checked spelling of files and directory names and everything appears to be OK.

Any idea why the simpleui.rc file is not picked up?

Thanks in advance.

Re: local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

I think this may be some change in the AsusLauncher on 900s (or later 900s).  I've seen this before but I'm not aware of the actual answer.

As a test, do the changes show up if you edit the original?

I don't have a 900 to check this but I believe the local override file on a 900 is located at /var/lib/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc

Re: local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

Problem solved! Thanks for your help!

The solution was indeed to create a simpleui.rc file in /var/lib/AsusLauncher

In practice, what I did is:
sudo mkdir /var/lib/AsusLauncher
sudo ln -s /var/lib/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc /home/user/.AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc

I not sure if the last step is so elegant...
I might as a next step in my EEE "experience experiments" make it a multiuser machine with a dedicated Easy Mode UI per user account. Then I will have to change anyway.

In the mean time I will try to keep track of all the changes I'm doing because it would appear the Xandros on the EEE 900 is indeed a bit different than on the EEE 700, which is a pitty (in my opinion).

Kind regards,

It is a pleasure.  I am pleased it worked.

What we need quite urgently is for people who have 900s and other variants to edit the wiki to point out where what has been posted in respect of the 70x series does not work on their machines and what solutions have been found.

Re: local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

Hi there, this is stumping me. Here is where I'm stuck. I have the new .AsusLauncher directory and I copied the simpleui.rc file there and edited it. Like the OP, it does not appear to be working.

I'm trying to figure out creating this link and I'm having trouble. I'm getting the "File Exists" as the error. Am I supposed to delete the old simpleui.rc file in the /var/lib/AsusLauncher/ directory and replace it with the symbolic link to the new one?

I have the 901 by the way.

Re: local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

@Neil1952
When you say the override file is /var/lib/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc, does that mean that this is the live file and not the one in /home/user/.AsusLuncher/?
If this is the case should I replace /home/user/.AsusLauncher with /var/lib/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc in all the wiki guidelines?
Thanks.

Re: local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

701 USERS BEWARE

With the latest AsusLauncher Update the 701 now also does not take notice of the copy of the file in the ~/.AsusLauncher directory any more, so editors that modify that file no longer work.

With the new AsusUpdater the same applies to the 701 now and the linking solution now works on the 701 as well

Wonder why they changed this;  I would rather just backup my /home/user area on a daily basis and know that any customizations I made are safe.  Now I have to backup the whole shebang.

I made a symbolic link from /home/user/.AsusLauncher and pointed it to /var/lib/AsusLauncher/ so now all the editors work like normal.

Re: local simpleui.rc NOT taken into account in EasyMode user interface

startsimple.sh is also changed during updates, so if you're trying to remove asus eyecandy you'll need to re-do your edits to that file.

As others have said this is a frustrating update.  I was daft to update a bunch of scripts without really knowing what they'd do, but it's annoying of Asus to just overwrite modified scripts, and to move scripts around.
