Hi, I am new to the forum and just got myself an EeePC due to walking past one and heard about its price and mod-ability...
So here is the main question, has anyone done any EeePC901 specific mods?
- Replacing SSD to larger sizes and single drive rather than 2... if so where to look? (To my understanding its removable)
- Using the extra PCI-e Slot??
- Make use of the SIM slot??
- Soldering extra USB for internal use?? Eg: Extra storage and soldering USB to fit USB 3G dongles
I cant find any and the mod/hack section is flooded with all sorts of mods without specific model designation and most are not 901 relevant.
Maybe this is something for the moderators to look into... categorising hacks and mods to specific models...
Perhaps I am asking too early? since I dont see many posts regarding mods on the 901.
I live in Hong Kong, and the 901 have been selling for some times now I think... so I would have thought someone would have gotten to it with a soldering iron by now...

Yes, you are asking too early... And I can hardly consider HK's official release date of Jun 19 to be "selling for some time" ![]()

Well I walked past the 901 one day and I decided to get one...
I had a bad EeePC the first time around... when I charged the Eee for the 2nd time... it gave off smoke... apparently according to Asus tech I had burnt marks on my mobo... altho the machine still functions... I got a complete replacement anyway after much trouble... and threatened to go to the authorities about sales of a potientally dangerous product...
apart from that all is well and awaiting mods

Well, i am testing a zif drive in the hard drive bay later today, if that works, we can add 1.8" drives up to 8mm in height (without modification).
looks like a lot of room can be made in the ram bay area if some of the plastic was cut away, but if u look at my thread, i have some pics and everything

I found out that, without modification, you cannot plug a non ssd mini pcie to the ssd port. when doing so, you cannot read either drive. to simply put it, i have my c: and d: ssd (4 and 8gb respectively) when i removed the d:, and replaced with the wifi card, i could not read either c: or d:, could not boot into windows or see it in the bios. When i just removed d: and did not plug anything in its place, it booted up and detected the c: drive fine...
saying that, the secondary ssd is not soldered in, it simply is screwed in like all mini pcie devices. i would assume u could replace it.. but there is currently nothing to replace it with.. but soon they are coming out with mini pci-e ssd drives

Thank you! That is what I meant by larger size (ie larger capacity not physical size). So larger replacement SSD drives for the EEE PC will be available sometime? That would tip the balance as I am debating whether to get an 900 Linux or the 901 XP (the 901 Linux seems delayed in Hong Kong).

I have asked my friend who works at the Asus Repair Center in Hong Kong... She said there will be no official upgrade options... but that doesnt say you cant get one of the same from a different model EeePC
