I've just had the best day!
Not only does Cafe Gusto have free WiFi (UK cafe) but they gave me a free choc o pain!
But that's not what tickled me, no. I'm sat in the cafe, surfing and chatting on my Eee PC, and a man comes all the way in to the cafe just to exclaim and talk to me about my little black beauty! He'd heard about ASUS and was impressed to see one.
He wasn't the only person either, another gentleman commented on it's teeny size.
:)

We Eee users certainly do cause a stir whenever our notebooks appear. ![]()

Uhhh there's something funky about that sentence when isolated like I've done for you (you're welcome :-) )
Very cool!

I pulled mine out the other day at a pub with wi-fi access and a man came over to take a look.
He had heard of the eee, but based on the way Asus seems to be selling it (and the screenshots of Easy mode) he assumed it was 'just a PDA'. He was then rather taken aback when he saw me running in Advanced mode, showing him a fully featured (and user-friendly) Linux OS.
He ended up dragging his two drinking buddies over to "Ooh! Ahh!" over it. Too bad the place I bought mine was sold out or they would have picked up a number of sales that day...

It's funny, cos if you pull out an iPhone or a RAZR or the iPod Shuffle, people's eyes light up but then they pretend it's no big deal (which it isn't) - but if you pull out the Eee PC, people smile and get excited!

I took mine to work, 7 colleagues have placed orders now.

i'm gonna try this in Seattle when I get mine tomorrow, see if people get excited

So far I have used it in the following places and gotten no response whatsoever:
* A cafe across the way
* A cafe in town
* Starbucks on Tottenham Court Road
* School library
* Work, in meetings
and the crown jewel:
* the Tube.
When I got it out in class, to be fair, lots of people were smitten, but otherwise people are past caring, it seems. No matter, I am using it in those places to get work done, not feel like the centre of technological attention.

I can't wait to pull mine out in public! :p
Still a couple of weeks to wait!

I thought for sure I would garner a few comments when I had a flight 2 wks ago, but people looked and didn't comment. Then I thought, SURELY the guy sitting next to me on the plane with his gigantic Dell lappy would say something, but he also was using a really old giant Blackberry, so I guess he didn't care much for his gadget size... ![]()

I pulled my Eee PC out in a store/café while waiting for my wife to show up for a date. The two employees came over and oohed and aaahed, and one wrote down the name of the unit. They couldn't believe the price.
Then my wife showed up, yelled "You're always playing with your damned computer!" and stormed out.
Kinda took the glow off the whole demo.

I can't get any work done in Starbucks because everyone keeps bugging me. I think we should all be on commission. I've found that (a) no one cares about the 512M or 4GB; (b) no one cares that it isn't Windows; (c) no one knows the Asus name, and so I spend most of the conversation explaining who the company is.
People really do care about the company behind a product, and want at least some level of name recognition. I do believe Asus is working on that, however.
While waiting for Japanese takeout the other day I pulled it out of my cargo pants side pocket (where it fits perfectly), found an open wireless access point (from the public library next door) and starting surfing these boards. Everyone was so intrigued that even the sushi chef stopped what he was doing and came over to play with it.

Shame really, that would say many of us are rather shallow name droppers... :-(

So...the Eee attracts men, huh? *throws away his Eee*

You can tell the next string of people who ask about the brand that they make MacBooks, that'll give Asus a few good brownie points.
BTW, reading these types of threads is making me really envious and increasing my annoyance mine hasn't been delivered yet.

Well, all of us here certainly know Asus (I've certainly built enough systems around their motherboards, and back in the day used their whitebox video cards).
But yeah, everyone is all happy and excited, and then ask me who makes it, expecting Apple or Sony because of the looks. When I say Asus, they get a sad and confused look and the conversation just...dies. So I have to pick it up by explaining Asus's history, but by then I've "lost" them.
They're already thinking about how they'll have to explain it all to someone.

I'm a guy, and most of the people who ask me about it are chicks. The sushi chef who came over to play with it, all the while grunting his approval in that inimitable sushi chef way, was an exception ![]()

hehe ive had mine at work and had few comments on it.
Best was other day. middle of my lecture, second row. (it being a mulitmedia course) meant that there was 7 macs in a row (only place i can go and be unquie for having a xp). Im stuck dead in middle with my eee. I got fair few questions about it from the lecturer and other students.
had comments in the libary or in labs from teachers etc.

I had mine out in a Starbucks today, and a young dude who had apparently heard of the EEE wanted to heft it to see how much it weighed... then he said he was picking one up tomorrow.
It's a killer product for sure!

I showed my white Eee to my friend and his girlfriend started scolding him. Why? Coz he bought her a bulky and expensive laptop but she wanted the cute white one!

I mean, Wow...really? Asus is a pretty trusted brand here in the Philippines.
Even non-techies / strangers who asked me about my EEE all know Asus, or at least have some level of name recognition.

I'm in New York City, and believe it or not this isn't a particularly tech savvy town. Finance, fashion, advertising, marketing, music, film, theatre, TV -- yes. Technology, no (only briefly during the dot com boom years).
Even the hip twenty-somethings aren't aware of the name.
