before I do something that would not succeed properly, I ask the question here.
Has anyone got experience installing Windows 2000 onto the Eee PC? I think it would be possible, but do all the Asus drivers work?

Its what the search is for man! There is plenty of Info on here, I have looked at pretty much all of it and adapted nlite to install 2k with a guide on here.

The following procedure is supposed to make the webcam work under w2K.
I didn't write a word of it, nor did i try it: i just made the translation.
Install webcam windows 2000:
First install directX9c:
http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche … rectx.html
Then install skype or aMSN.
http://www.skype.com/intl/fr/download/skype/windows/
http://www.amsn-project.net/
Last install the webcam
Install the first disponible driver:
http://www.empiatech.com.tw/support/IC_ … 072007.zip
It install some files but does not recognize the webcam.
Install a second driver WITHOUT REPLACING THE PRECEDENT FILES :
http://www.szneo.com/main/download/pccam/2760/2760.rar
Now, the webcam is recognized and works, but the image shows the wrong way.
Open skype OR amsn, uncheck "vertical flip" and "horizontal flip"
In SKYPE : tools, options, video, webcam parameters, video image
OR (you don't need to do both)
In Amsn : account, preferences, others, « set audio and video settings, next, change video settings, uncheck the 2 video images items as for skype.

One comment here about loading a custom install (don't do a full install). The chances are excellent that you DON'T need dotNET and COM services. Buggy and full of security holes. Win2000 works the best if using sp4 edition, as this lets you make a bootable USB stick (as opposed to several floppies). ENJOY.

Can anyone verify if this webcam fix works?
If so, it should be on the wiki.

The original poster i copied from says so.
I was only able to install the drivers, working well, and next amsn.
But amsn won't start any pictures from the webcam, or maybe i don't know how to manage it.
That same poster says one should maybe run the installation 2 or 3 times for it to work, or maybe that it depends upon some dlls installed by some third party software (wmp, vlc....).
I didn't have the time to try for it by now, i am not very concerned with webcams; but, as i already said, if the guy said it works for him, i am absolutely sure it does.

I've run Windows 2000 on one once upon a time; I thought it was a great experience because it's basically a lightweight Windows XP.

Well, I tried the Windows 2000 / Webcam trick and no luck. Too bad...slipstreaming 2000 gets my system install down to under 1.6GB.
Offline
same here...no luck with the windows 2000 webcam...back to XP!
Cheers anyway!

I just made the feedback to the original poster on the french forum, asking him to exactly show us how he made the thing work.
If i get something, i shall try it myself before (i remind i succeeded with the drivers, but that's it...) and translate the procedure here, credits due of course to that guy.
Wait and see, but my impression is that the applied procedure was quite empirical, and that the guy does not exactly remember what he did or not, particularly regarding what third party software and/or libraries were prior installed.

Hi brucine,
I actually speak french. Could you post the website address? and i will try and help as well.

Here you are:
http://forum.eee-pc.fr/sujet-56-windows-2000-eee
The guy now says, on one side, that the install should be made 2 or 3 times for it to last work, on the other side that the Azureus driver for eeepc 900 xp should do the job.

Eurêka for the first part (getting the image)
Keep the drivers i talked of in first place.
Go to: \Program Files\USB Camera\Driver\Win2K-XP1
Launch etamCap.exe
Go to the device menu, you have two identical ET USB 2760 Camera:
Click the SECOND one.
Go to: Capture, Start Capture.
Now, i have my face on the screen: i shall be back, time to get shaved..
It seems that amsn doesn't want to see the captured sequences, but that is amsn related, not webcam; the still image peripherics in windows recognize only Windows Imaging as the Twain Interface, keeping the acquisition to be made:
that has to be the next step, but i a sure everyone of you is better then me at that and will help....

For those who can read Chinese, please take a look of this page.
The author claims the webcam can be made to work under Windows 2000.

Here is my translation regarding the steps to install drivers, after Win2k+SP4 has been installed OK on the eeePC:
The order of installing the eeePC drivers is very important:
(1) Install Intel chipset driver
(2) Install Asus ACPI drivers.
(3) Suggest to install Intel " (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver" Patch, http://couponmeister.com/blog/HD_Audio/ … 2ksp4.exe.
(4) Install Realtek Sound Card drivers. With the above patch, Realtek drivers should be installed OK. Otherwise it may be unable to install.
(5) Install Lan Card driver. If you download this, the driver is in the " Attansic" sub-folder. Double clicking setup.exe will do.
(6) The remaining drivers can be installed in any order except the WebCam Driver which must be installed as the last one.
(7) Next is to install Direct-X. I used 8.1 edition. It saves disk space. If you must play Game, you may decide whether to use the 9.0c version or not. Whichever version is fine. Version 8.1 is good enough to play rmvb files smoothly.
(8) Lastly install a set of Webcam drivers in the following order. It is important to follow the order listed here as a subsequent driver substitutes some files of the preceding driver. Hence the order is very important! (NOTE: Strictly follow the following order of installation)
(8a)http://www.adstech.com/products/USBX202 … DSV301.exe
(8b) http://driver1.it168.com/driverfiles2/0 … _drv80.exe
(8c) http://www.szneo.com/main/download/pccam/2760/2760.rar
First driver (8a) installs appropriate usb2.0 driver for win2000
Second driver (8b) is needed for supporting the reversion video
The final driver (8c) is the real webcam driver. It will link up those hardware that the first two drivers cannot find.
(annotated: Since I published the above, some friends discover a file called " DEF-299 driver " http://www.exoo.cn/down.php?nowmenuid=53669
They say they only need to install this single file and the WebCam works fine. You might as well try.)
By following the above steps, the complete eeePC function will be established successfully!

Your 2nd and 4th link are chinese websites, we would need the help of a chinese reader to know what to download.
the 3th one ihas becomed 404, although it is one i already had, and i have already some times ago downloaded the szneo driver.
Did you get the webcam to work?
Offline
I am in the process of installing WinXP (SP4).
Have not installed any driver yet.
Just take a look of 2nd link (i.e. Driver in step 8b). Can't figure out where to click. Will come back later if I can make some sense of it.
The 4th link (i.e. the DEF-299 Driver). Here is the direct link to download it.
http://www.supereyes.cc/down/DEF-299.rar
Try it out to see if this DEF-299 driver works or not.
If it does, then you don't need the drivers mentioned in Step 8a, 8b and 8c.
Good luck! Let me know any good news! Thanks!

I said precedently that the procedure i got from somebody else on a french forum did make the webcam work, and not upside down as sometimes said, but only as a standalone image capturing tool:
as the drivers would not be recognized as a still image device in the twain interface, there was no way to use it in amsn, skype or whatever, but only to send still images or avi videos as attachments.
I tried to fake your procedure, and desinstalled every webcam driver i had, then installed sound drivers i never did install (who knows, might have some influence?), and then downloaded your def 299 thing.
It is worse, nothing is working: the usb camera is recgnized as a "empia composite usb device" and "ET usb snapshot control", but at the boot asks drivers for a "composite usb device", and fails installing them because of "missing section in oem16.inf" (which is, factually, the image of the hardware etvideo.inf installing every needed things under \system32\inf): no way to get even a standalone image, as snapshot doesn't recognize any video device.
I belive there's some kind of conflict between this usb device and the "usb audio/video device driver", the last being installed as well by the usb camera and the asus audio drivers.
That does not however prove anything, as i do not have a "fresh" w2K installation, and did not install "high definition" Intel audio drivers nor can remember for sure of the exact order of drivers installation i used.
You should try it yourself with you fresh install, the only risk being the webcam not to work.

Here is the direct link to download the driver in Step 8b

According to the site, this is the driver for the "10Moons" brand of webcams.

I will try it when I wll have some spare time this coming weekend.
I would rather try the 3 drivers in Steps 8a, 8b and 8c.
You said the link for the szneo driver in Step 8c has error code 404.
Where else can I find it?

I don't know, it might be elsewhere on the szneo website, but it is still in chinese.
If you don't find it (camera model is eMPIA 2780), tell me, i can upload it to my web page.

Is it 2780 or 2760? Please clarify. Thanks!

Sorry for the typo: 2760, of course, 2780 does not exist as far as i know

I found the bug in the last link you provided:
the inf file calls for a etWHQL.cat for video drivers while the downloaded file is actually emWHQL.cat for audio drivers: the inf installation file, seeming in every point correct, throws you out because it does not find this proper inf section.
Unless i messed myself the installation (but i just clicked a setup.exe), this driver is **** and should not be used unless one finds a third-party download of the right version of the latter file.
