BOINC on Linux

Perhaps this is a 'general' topic, but I thought it should be under Linux software.

I'm thrilled to have managed to install the BOINC software from Berkeley Uni, and I'm running SETI@Home 'work units' in about 15 hours, so that's fair crunching considering the little Eee PC chip.

Not sure what I'm talking about? View the last link below smile

Re: BOINC on Linux

Suggestion, try to lighten up the laptop so it's not that bloated by removing all the kid stuffs and
other applications that you will never use.  I.e., go thru the launch menu and note what you
don't want.  Then go to

launch
-> appl.
-> system
-> Synaptic P.M.

find what you don't want.  Click the filled box just left of the application and
choose to (full?) removal.

p.s. If you want speed, consider installing gentoo or slackware.  I noted the
in the wiki, there is instruction for installing gentoo.  Warning: gentoo and
slackware are not user-friendly, IMHO.  Xandros is one of the slowest
distro.  A compromise between user-friendly and speed would be Puppy
Linux (also in the wiki).

Re: BOINC on Linux

I'm not confident in removing software yet, there is the risk that I could remove 'dependencies' that other applications need. Besides, BOINC doesn't need that mush space at all. BOINC does very well on the little intel chip within Xandros smile

Re: BOINC on Linux

In Synaptic, P.M., remove them, but do not do full removal.
It the question on how fast you want BOINC to run.  If real fast,
try another OS (but I recommend newbies not to change OS
for an year and learn some basic linux first).

Re: BOINC on Linux

Listen Shengchieh, I want to use Xandros, and there are some BOINC projects that only run on Linux. I have absolutely no need to remove programs, because BOINC does not care how many programs are installed - it has no relevance.
