Top Games that play great on the EeePC 701
I have started this thread to list games that play perfectly on the EeePC 701. There are many games which work but with lots of efforts and wastage of time and then too they don't work perfectly on the EeePC 701. Therefore, I thought listing only games here that work great with the 701 would be helpful for 701 gamers along with settings for playing the game :
Games which pass the following criteria only are listed here :
(a) They have to be top games and classics with a good score on Gamespot.
(b) Have not to be very old games.
(c) Have to play on the full screen of the EeePC 701, real full screen or stretched.
(d) Should play at native specs - 512MB, 630Mz. No stuttering and a good FPS rate.
(1) Aliens V/s Predator 2, runs excellent on stock 701, just edit the config file and change res to 800 x 480. (says beeks)
Gamespot Review - Aliens Vs Predator 2
Release Date : Oct 31, 2001
Gamespot Score : 8.70
(2) Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amin & Throne of Bhaal plays perfectly at full 800x480 resolution (though stretched). Change the resolution in-game to 800x600 and it plays perfectly with BASSAM's AsTray Plus. Install the latest 23037 patch & use the No-CD patch to play without a CD. If the Windows hour-glass cursor shows in the game then use http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=14516 utility to remove it.
UPDATE : For EeePC 1024x600 resolution owners : Use the widescreen patch from http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/ to play real widescreen on 1024x600 resolution !
Gamespot Review - Baldur's Gate 2
Release Date : Sept 24, 2000
Gamespot Score : 9.20
(3) Conflict Desert Storm runs fine on Stock 701, Cant get it to run at 800x480 but runs fine at 800x600. (submitted by beeks)
(4) Counterstrike 1.6, Condition Zero & Half-Life play perfectly at 640x480 resolution fullscreen stretched. It stutters a bit at 630Mz. You need to overclock your 701 it to 900Mz to play it perfectly & smoothly.
(5) Freedom Fighters runs on Stock 701, Select 800x480 from GFX config and turn down gfx options to medium. (says beeks)
Gamespot Review - Freedom Fighters
Release date : Oct 1, 2003
Gamespot Score : 9.30
(6) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - Another game which plays perfectly at Native specs. Change the resolution in-game to 800x480x32 and set Widescreen ON to play this game in true wide-screen.
Gamespot Review - GTA Vice City
Release date : May 12, 2003
Gamespot Score : 9.30
(7) Halo: Combat Evolved - To get halo to work, make sure you clock your EEEPC to 900mhz using a program like eeectl. (I am running Windows XP Pro). Open 3D Analyze and select the *.exe file to run halo.
Here are the Settings that need a check mark beside them:
force SW TnL
force windowed mode
force max. pixel shader version 1.1
emulate HW TnL caps
Enjoy! (says Barlow)
So i ran it with 3DAnalyze and its great, i didnt need to overclock my EEE and the resolution can be changed to the bog standard EEE resolution for even better game play. The FPS is great, i repeat, over clocking is not needed. (says DanTheTray)
You can download 3DAnalyze from here
Gamespot Review - Halo: Combat Evolved (PC)
Release date : Sept 30, 2003
Gamespot Score : 9.00
(8) Heros of Might & Magic II - I can comfirm that Heroes of Might and Magic 2 works without any problems in 800x480 resolution (says Jefim)
Gamespot Review - Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars (PC)
Release date : Oct 31, 1996
Gamespot Score : 8.20
(9) Hostile Waters - (Rage Software). Runs great on Stock 701 Eee PC, even allows you to select 800x480 resolution so no fiddling about. Runs smoothly with decent FPS even in combat mode. (Submitted by beeks)
Gamespot Review - Hostile Waters : Antaeus Rising
Release date : June 13, 2001
Gamespot Score : 8.50
(10) Neverwinter Nights, just use NDubyaConfig to set the 800x480 resolution and update to version 1.68 to remove the cd check. (thanks to mitch1974) But this will loose the Quick launch bar at the bottom. If you want the quick launch bar too then you will have to set the resolution to 800x600 and set scrolling on in AsTray +.
Gamespot Review - Never Winter Nights
Release date : June 16, 2002.
Gamespot Score : 9.20
(11) Quake III (thanks to HalcYoN) Note : doesn't play at true widescreen.
(12) Starcraft works fine at full 800x480 resolution (though stretched). Only, some information on the screen is too tiny and is readable only with sharp eyes !
Gamespot Review - Starcraft
Game Release date : April 1, 1998
Gamespot Score : 9.10
(13) Unreal Tournament runs great on the 701. It runs full 800x480 with real widescreen, looks crackers and runs smooth as a baby's bottom on the native specs....512MB RAM, 630Mz speed. Install the latest patch 436 to play without the CD. This is one of the very few games which play true widescreen 800x480. Check here how to play true widescreen http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/fo … hp?t=4042. The best FPS on the EeePC.
Gamespot Review - Unreal Tournament
Game Release date : Nov 30, 1999.
Gamespot Score : 9.50
(14) Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption - Copied CD's to USB stick and installed flawlessly. Patched to 1.1. Does need a NOCD exe, but the ones on the net do not "crack" the CD key requirement, so I'm not feeling too bad about this smile This game is a gem. Will run at 800x480 by default, and you can set everything to high. It might look dated at first, but it's a kickass game with an amazing storyline, good voice acting, and navigates well with the trackpad for a 3D game. (Tip: use Z to look around.) (says DeathKnight)
Gamespot Review - Vampire the Masquerade : Redemption
Game Release date : June 7, 2000.
Gamespot Score : 6.80
(15) Warcraft III after installing the latest 1.21b patch which plays without a CD check. You need to change the resolution in the Registry to 800x480 to play it full screen (though stretched, not true widescreen)
Gamespot Review - Warcraft III
Game Release date : July 3, 2002
Gamespot Score : 9.30
I will go on updating this list / post with more games as and when you list one here.

Quake III runs very well. I am in the process of going through all levels at Hurt Me Plenty when I get breaks at the office. Heh.
Can't wait to put the hurt on my buddies at the net LAN with the EEE.

I must say that it run slow without overclocking even though was set to low, but the resolution was 800*600 and it ran from my externaö usb harddrive, and it was installed by my Dell Inspiron. I think it would run better if I installed it from my eee and set the resolution to 800*480.

Sims 1 Complete Collection works great without any screen hacks.
Just the click on controls are in the scrollable portion of the 800x600 resolution, and are not needed when keyboard shortcuts are used. All of the important portions of the game are visable in the portion of the screen that does not need to be scrolled.
If you want to access the click on controls, in the scrollable portion of the screen, the game play is slow enough it isn't a problem.
So far the game has worked flawlessly on a WD external harddrive. I was not able to install it on my USB stick, as it took too long to install.
I tried installing Sims 1 without any expansion packs on the USB stick and it took about an hour to install. It worked flawlessly, but I really wanted the expansion packs and was not willing to spend an entire day installing a game.

Warcraft III works fine with the latest 1.21b patch which plays without CD.
You need to change the resolution in the Registry to 800x480. Search for "Warcraft" in the Registry. Works great, only thing is that it doesn't play at true wide-screen but stretched.

GTA San Andreas works fine. A little bit slow but acceptable.
Offline
GTA 3 Works fine even at stock speed, and perfect a little overclocked
Ages of Empires 2 Scrolling (Stock speed)
Ford Off Road (Stock speed)
Red Alert 2 (Stock speed)
Worms Armageddon (Stock speed)
Free games that works fine:
Flyff (MMORPG)
Cabal (MMORPG)
Conquers Online (MMORPG)
EuDemon Online (MMORPG)

Baldur's Gate 2 - Shadows of Amin & Throne of Bhaal (see first post for details)

Doom 1 - works very smoothly ... no lagging what so ever in combat.
JDoom (Doom Add On Enhanced Graics and sounds) - Works fine when in heavy combat the game will lag and run at 3 - 10 frames per second. This only happens when your firing rockets and there are 10+ enemys aroud you.
Once you have increased the angle of vision it looks great ... a widescreen 1st person shooter.
Harry Potter and the philosopher's Stone - This (like doom) works great, i havnt encountered any lagging. Playing quiddich is great ... in combat is great ... generally exploring hogwarts is great. (I did notice that the E3PC was getting quite hot .... checked o eeectl and the CPU was running at 63oC)
Elastomainia - Great little timewaster;) Works perfectly. Looks better on a E3pc than a normal pc screen, it looks more 'real'. the PC screen gives the game a pixely feel.
Duke Nukem 1 - Again works just as well as Doom 1. No lagging what so ever.
MS Flight Simulator 95 & 98 - Works great ... like elastomainia it looks better on a small screen as it looks more 'real', as the pixels are smaller and the whole image looks flush.
NOTE : all games running on 2G surf - stock 571 mhz - stock 512mb RAM.
I know you said 'list games that work on the 701', please make a seperate section at the bottom for the 700 series. Or keep them i the same section as there is only a 60mhz difference in CPU performance.

Unreal Tournament works perfectly and the resultion can be set to 800 x 480 by editing a config file (run a search).
Also, Age of Empires run great. Yes, you have to run it in 800 x 600, but given the nature of the game you hardly even notice the scrolling. Unfortunately,, you've got to install a hack to run without CD.
Mame is great.
With those three I'm happy.
The only thing I regret right now is nuking Solitaire from my nLite install.

(7) Starcraft works fine at full 800x480 resolution (though stretched).
Is there a new way to stretch the screen without using the pin shorting method? When I play I'm only able to get 640x480 giving me that nice black bar.

zDoom (Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen) all run perfectly.
Halo runs acceptably.
