I installed xp pro on my eee the first night it got here. Last night I rebuilt my xp iso using the guide at http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 and it worked great. For the remove hard drive step I went into the BIOS---->Advanced---->IDE Configuration---->IDE Master----->and changed the type to Not Installed, saved my changes.
When I went to install XP pro it still listed the ssd, but it also listed my 40gb 2.5" usb hard drive. So I chose the usb drive and installed to it.
After the install was finished and the Asus drivers were installed I went back into the BIOS and changed the IDE Master setting back to Auto. This makes it so you still boot the ssd, but when you want to boot the usb just hold down Esc at bootup and choose your device.
I would like the best of both worlds but not lose the portability of the EEE.
If I install Win XP onto an external USB Drive and leave Linux on the internal SSD, will I be able to remove the external drive and just boot as normal? And on the occasions I need XP just plug in the drive, press Esc and change the boot to XP

i will get back to you as I am currently installing XP on a USB Harddrive. I am hoping that the USB drive will boot before Grub does on the SSD.

If you press Esc at startup and choose boot from USB will that not override Grub? Or am I talking through my hat?

Hi Longhorn
Hows it going on the XP install?
Do you think this will work?

I got this working fine-- USB HDD plugged in, it boots XP, unplugged default OS. Xandros also reads off the NTFS USB disk just fine.
I had to disable the internal SSD in the BIOS before installing XP, so that the USB disk was C: -- otherwise you may have some boot record issues. I believe you should NOT install XP if it is listing the USB disk as anything other than C: during the install-- the first time I hosed up my MBR and had to re-image Xandros.
You have to tweak the BIOS a bunch but once all is done it is very slick.
Works like a dream now. Only took two hours of troubleshooting, LOL.
Oh, I don;t use ESC on boot, all was done with the BIOS boot order.

Hi Mbirds pleased to here of your success.
Did you discover your own way or follow someones instructions.
If it was an easy solution perhaps you would be kind enough to explain how

haha.. what about running vmware to access the WinXP drive from within the linux distro. Would work decent to access other services quickly. Would def want 2gb of ram. This would be pretty slick also.

Peter,
Well, I used Nlite first to shrink the install per the big thread here. Then I used he instructions at http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 to tweak the XP image, then burned to CD.
Before installing, I went into the BIOS and IDE Options and disabled the internal drive. Just hit enter, it does not look like you can select it. When booting from CD, the XP install still recognizes the internal drive, but assigns C: to the USB hard drive. Install XP.
Then in the BIOS, search for devices so it finds the SSD. Then go to boot options and hard drives. Put the USB drive first and the SSD second. If it doesn't detect the USB, it will boot Xandros.
However, I may switch to the ESC on boot option so it doesn't accidentally boot XP if I leave the USB drive plugged in. Not sure which I prefer.
Hope this helps
Marcus

Thanks Mbird I will lock myself away for a week and try it!!!
I noticed on some posts that XP version 2000 had a problem with one of the files which caused it ti hang.
Which version did you use to start with, or do you think it will resolve itself in the cooking

I used version 2002, and had Nlite incorporate SP2--- everything per the wiki here.
Not sure of any issues with version 2000... I am an amateur, sorry!

I just got really frustrated by the terrible media player performance (mplayer and vlc) and wiped Xandros, putting XP on the SSD. Boots almost as quick (25 sec) and runs everything I need perfectly. With an Nlited XP install, Firefox, Open Office, Foxit, and K-lite codec pack and page file disabled I have 2.6GB free. Just over a gig for the OS and apps. I don't know why everyone is so down on XP, it has always been pretty good to me and you can't beat the software availablity. Done ranting.

Did exactly what mbird did.
I trimmed down Xp using nlite and then edited some files as this guide shows.
http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176
Then burned it to a disc and installed via external cd-rom. Worked first time. After installing drivers and cutting the OS down it boots in 2mins 2secs. haha

LE, why the slow boot-- what kind of drive is it? Pen drive?

WD passport USB harddrive. It runs at 5200rpm so I guess thats why. I even did some msconfig magic which helped it a little. The 4401 bios has USB2.0 correct?
Offline
Yes... My WD passport is very fast on the eee (4401)-- booted in less than 30 sec from power on. Maybe USB 1.1 is set in the BIOS or something?
Or, it sounds like if the OS option is set to "Start" instead of "installed" in the BIOS, it sets the USB to 1.1.

if you dont want to spend money on the full win iso and you have a linux box
just
cat /mnt/cdrom >winxp.iso
mount -o loop winxp.iso /mnt/loopback
then add// delete files
then unmount
will be trying this later today

I tried installing WinXP on a Seagate FreeAgent Go 120GB following the tips in this thread but the first time the PC reboots I got a blue screen saying UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME (among the usual logorhea).
The internal HDD was disabled and the USB disk showed as C:
I've even run fixboot and fixmbr on the C: drive, no joy...
Any suggestions?
(Have to go to sleep, work is on tomorrow...)

yeah i got that too once
you have to disable ssd before you make partitions i think

Maybe some issue with the disk... have you tried having XP reformat before installation?
