So I got my eee PC on Friday via J&R, and by Saturday night it seems the left "mouse" button below the touchpad is dead.
Just no longer works. External mouse works fine, tapping the Touchpad works fine, right "mouse" button below the touchpad works fine.
On the off chance that this might (still) be a software issue, what can I do / run to see if it is a software issue and not a dead switch?
Thanks,

You can configure the touchpad using the Settings tab and Touchpad icon.
I had a problem with mine where I rebooted and it randomly set the touchpad to minimum sensitivity. Maybe there's some config corruption or something. ![]()

One more data point -- after booting, the touchpad often (always?) doesn't work in terms of double-tapping. It works fine for navigation.
But if I (re-)boot into advanced mode (I set it up to do so as per the forums here), the touchpad always works for navigation and double-tapping, but never for left-clicking ...
The difference between the two behaviors makes me suspect software over hardware, even though left-clicking doesn't work in Easy or Advanced mode.

P.S. I did notice the the random resets on the touchpad control panel -- but changing them back didn't fix anything.
P.P.S. My unit had one hot pixel, lower left corner.

Is there a utility on the ee PC to show the state of each mouse button? I couldn/t find one.
To me, it looks like the left button is stuck (electrically) in the "pressed" state, even though mechanically it still appears to work (i.e. it clicks when you press it, and rises up when you release it).
I say this because each time my eee PC boots, it launches World Clock. World Clock is in the middle of the desktop, directly below where the cursor is initially placed. So ... boot, cursor finds itself over World Clock, left button is seen as being pressed, launches World Clock, can't do anything else because left button is never released. ![]()

I'm having the same problem.
After a few weeks of having my eee pc the left mouse button has stopped responding. It's working maybe 20% of the time, which is very frustrating. The right button works 100%.
I think its a hardware issue.
Anyone else had this or figured it out?

I returned mine and J&R shipped a new one about two weeks later. Second one is a 7B (no internal PCI) but also has no stuck pixels, unlike the first one.

I am having a really weird issue with the mouse buttons as well...
Using the LEFT button (or even tapping on the touchpad) is causing the PC to switch between apps I have running. For example, when I just tried to click on "Post Reply" it switched to the anti virus software running in the background. My touchpad still works as I can move the pointer on the screen. But attempting to make a click by tapping on the pad or clicking the left button does nothing. Also when I roll over a link, it does nothing - usually the arrow changes to a finger.
This is really frustrating because this is rendering my touchpad useless.
On another note, since I bought this in Taiwan (and I am in Australia), does this have international warranty???

Using the keyboard to navigate is proving extremely frustrating as this problem only just occurred. I may need to buy a mouse while I'm still traveling... This is a nightmare...

My touchpad/mouse buttons are still doing weird things. Just now the left button an d tapping functionality have returned but right mouse button is not working... I am currently in "easy" mode. If I went to "advanced" mode, will I get more options to tinker with the touchpad? I have a feeling I'm having software/driver issues with the touchpad/mouse.
Anyone with thoughts on what I can try? I'm a novice when it comes to this OS/environment...
Cheers,
Vincent

I'm having the same issue, it seems.
Right click works
touchpad will move the cursor around and sometimes recognize taps
left-click works intermittently.
sensitivity isn't the issue, and i'm considering RMA/contacting ASUS (bought my 4g black via buy.com) about this, but am wary of others wait times.

I seem to be having similar issues with my touchpad. (This is on a white German EeePC 701 4G.)
I can move the pointer around without any problems but left-clicking only works intermittently – regardless of whether I’m tapping the pad or clicking the physical button. It is as if the left touchpad button was electrically or logically stuck to the 'down' position for periods of time. However, I don’t see there being any physical problem with it. When this happens, it also affects an ordinary USB mouse – the button is then 'stuck' for the external mouse as well – but it does not happen at all if I disable the touchpad using the 'gsynaptics' configuration tool and only use an external mouse.
I have been trying to debug the problem by using the 'xev' utility which displays mouse events in a command line window. Curiously, the left button (both the physical button and tapping on the pad) seems to be sending 'down' and 'up' events like it should even during those periods of time when it appears to be stuck. So theoretically, it could be a driver related problem, or a touchpad firmware related problem – or even an X server related configuration problem. But I’m using the default Xandros installation at the moment and haven’t tweaked any touchpad-related settings on my own. The idea of there being such a problem in the default Xandros configuration seems unlikely considering there aren’t more people experiencing the same issue and complaining about it.
What is more, the right-hand touchpad button does not work at all. As far as the 'xev' utility is concerned, I don’t seem to be getting any button events from it whatsoever. :(
It is hard to say whether these two problems are related or separate issues but currently they render the touchpad useless for me: I have to keep using an external mouse.

@Jukka Aho
Does your left click work better after a restart of X (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace)? I have a similar problem where my right button does not work at all, and my left button works intermittently. I have found that restarting X after I boot solves my issues with the left click, but I still cannot get my right click to work. I am using eeeXubuntu, but I had the same issues in the default Xandros.
I'm still contemplating whether I should tear my eee apart to try to fix it or just send it in to Asus.

This is bizarre but I also purchased my eee from J&R, and my left 'mouse' button has stopped working.
When I startup my eee, the trackpad tracks, but tapping does not work, a restart of X fixes this though. No change in the left button however.
Has anyone found a fix for this problem? Is it a problem with J&R ![]()
I would return to them, but I live in Kuwait and had it shipped, so return isn't really an option.
What a shame, the eee is perfect otherwise.

I too am having this same issue. Intermittent left mouse and no right mouse (unless i attach a usb mouse) I have also noticed that I sometimes have no left mouse with the attached mouse. I had the problem with Xandros, and now also with xubuntu. If anyone has successfully resolved, please post!
thanks.

Same here. Running windows XP. Double tap and mouse left click stop working suddenly. Have to use an usb mouse now, really annoying.
Anyone fixed it yet? Thanks!

Maybe you should try returning it to where you bought it from. I bought a second EEE with the same problem, and since I couldn't figure out how to fix it, I returned it to where it was shipped from, and got a new one.

I'm really hoping to not go through the return process, so I am hoping someone will post with a solution. I have now been using the eee for 3 days with very minimal problems, it's been perfect for what I needed. On occasion the button stops working, but by doing a ctr-alt-bksp (restart X) clears the problem. I would love to hear from some of the earlier posters in this thread to see how/if they resolved the issue.

I am having the exact same problem as you guys are describing as we speak. It seems the left click is being held down for some reason even after I release the button. I am running windows xp so this leads me to believe its a hardware issue and not a software issue since you guys are running the stock xandros os and are having the same problem. I wonder if we will have to send our laptops back to asus? I actually wouldn't mind, maybe I can trade my white eee in for a black one. Anyway i'd be really interested to hear if any of you figure out a solution to this.

I have a theory that it might have something to do with the eee getting hot. The majority of the time that I've had problems with the clicking has been when I'm on my bed and the bottom vents are covered by my lap. Maybe the heat is causing the trackpad to overheat and malfunction? Just a guess..
Offline
That theory could be true. I use my eee on my bed also, and thats when it starts to play up. Coped with it for about a week then one night, left it standing on my desk (turned off). Turned it on in the morning, and viola, it was working. Bad thing was I had taken off the button and blown under it the previous night (before i left it on desk), so i presumed that that solved it.
Last night left stopped working again - i had been using it in bed.
Will leave it on desk again, and see what comes up.
Sadly for me, returning to seller or asus is a problem.

Yea, what I did when I was having problems clicking was turn it off and let it sit for a while until it cooled down. When I turned it back on, the problem went away. I guess the trackpad just doesn't like heat for some reason. This is a shame because the portability of the eee makes it the perfect laptop to use while chillin on your bed with it on your lap ![]()

Think someone may come along with a fix? ![]()
Would actually be good for someone to bring this up with asus.... If there are a number of reports of the same problem, surely it is something they have to fix! ![]()

Just got off the phone with ASUS customer service and they have given me a return code. Now I have to fax the invoice and wait for an email with instructions - if I decide to return it. The rep seemed to know nothing of this issue. I am still looking for another solution, would love to figure it out myself. I haven't noticed the heating up issue, mine seems to do it irregularly Ctr-Alt-Bksp always fixes it so I don't think it is a heating up issue. Today I had it on all day and never a problem.
btw the ASUS support numbers are here: http://support.asus.com/contact/contact … uage=en-us

Are they going to fully replace the laptop, or just fix yours and send it back to you?
