Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

Huawei 169 requires a patch to usb-storage driver to recognize the hardware similarly to 220...

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

probably the first place I would try is:

http://www.pharscape.org/

I am not sure about the Huaweii modems, but usb_modeswitch works just fine for switching the Option modems...

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

I think that ASUS is on a way to produce a small upgrade package to fix the issue for E169.

What is need ed is a patch to the source of the kernel - and then to rebuilt it.
Currently only th E220 has a fix to disregard the storage and use modem (check the 2.6.24 kernel source where it is now included), the same fix needs to be extended for E169.

Physically - usb-storage and libusual will need to be modified...

I've managed to get it working. I've written up the instructions in full here (http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=254)

Hope this helps!

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

Wow very thorough!! thanks for taking the time to fix this and publish detailed results from your findings.

I must admit I although i am quite proficient in Windows stuff I am brand new to Linux and realise I am a so wet behind the ears that even the simplest instructions seem a challenge.

Do you think its possible to simplify the instructions even more - or is it a case if i find that too hard I should just leave it for now?

Again well done on cracking it!!

(I am gonna keep reading through to see if i can get it)

Also does this hack allow the Modem to work automatically from now on or does it mean you have to follow these steps everytime?

Hi Dalelane, and thanks for that write up.  I've just bought a 900 and will be trying to get it going with my tmobile web-n-walk stick which I think it's a Huawei  E170.

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

I have the e170 web n walk mauve usb stick device going now, connected to t-mobile.  All I essentially did was:

1.  plug the e170 in, initially the led flashes green, then after a while turns blue.
2.  go into network connections and set up a 3g connection.  The rest is simple net setup stuff.
3.  enable, and you'll see what look like hayes commands and stuff going to the e170.
4.  eh voila!

thanks again dale! :-)

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

My first foray into linux has hit the buffers. I can’t get my web n walk stick (t-mobile) to work with my Eee PC --- desdpite promises from T-Mobile that it would.

They subsequently tell me they can’t/won’t support Linux....but it appears it will, though I know next to nothing about Linux, I’m afraid.

The EeePC recognises the stick and tries to connect. It give me an error message along the lines of ‘Failed to run pon. (pppclientservice.cpp:1007) The link was closed. Unable to reach destination.

If you can offer any help, I’d be very grateful.

By the by, if you want to avail yourself of free texting, you might like to try www.tex2me.com --- an altruistic little something I’ve been involved with.

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

It works with my German o2 1-euro-HUAWEI-E169G-USB-stick on eeePC default Linux installation.

Took me "only" 10 hours.

The biggest problem were finding, downloading, installing and compiling all the right packages+libraries (gcc, libusb. usb_modeswitch).

Tips:
- Be smarter than me: compile usb_modeswitch as root (took 2h to find out).
- Shell opens with "ctrl-alt-t"
- Searching for the 3G modem in the "Network"-wizard takes fairly long. Be patient (I wasn't, took 2h to find out).

I found basically all the information I needed through these websites:

http://www.greenhughes.com/content/huaw … g-easy-way
http://dalelane.co.uk/blog/?p=254
http://libusb.wiki.sourceforge.net/
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installin … pmenttools
http://www.greenhughes.com/content/usin … le-network
http://www.greenhughes.com/content/usin … -modem-eee

Hope somebody finds this helpful. Happy hacking!

I had a problem with my automatic scripts which I solved by typing "modprobe -r usb_storage".

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

Hi,
I have just got 169g modem on 3 broadband lite. Unfortunately being a newb i didn't understand all of Dale's instructions.  Namely i got stuck after I had downloaded usb_switch.  Using Advanced desktop I went to Synaptic package manager typed usb - hoping to find package for usb switch.  stumbled across package for Huawei and installed it.  Then went into network conections and set up first time.

Have previously added repositories as detailed on forum elsewhere.

Hope this is of some use

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

I am trying to set up this E169 for both myself and a colleague.
I have found the E169G-switch in Synaptic and it is already installed.
The Network Connection wizard doesn't see either the E169 or E220 though on the 900A (it saw it on the 900).

On the 900 it worked for a few days then it started behaving strangely. I have 3 power icons in the taskbar now (I can TERM them in Task Manager) and today it refuses to 'see' the E169 altogether (my E220 still works fine though).

**SOLVED**

Seems the Asus Mobile Phone tool has to discover the modem before starting the Network Connections Wizard then the Wizard detects the E169 as Hardware and it all installsfine.

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

Hi Guys,

Yesterday bought an Asus eee pc 1000 running easy mode and standard Linux set-up. Also bought an unlocked Huawei E169 modem which i intend to use abroad when i go to Australia later this year.

Unlike some here, on plugging in the modem, it is recognised and an 'Asus Mobile Phone Tool' window opens. It recognises the mobile operator for the card, T-Mobile, and allows me to 'connect'. When i do this the LED on the dongle changes from flashing to solid green, suggesting that it has found a network and has connected.

Then i go into Network connections and try to create a new connection. Again, it allows this and recognises and correctly identifies the Dongle as an Huwaei E169.

But when i then finish the network creation, on trying to connect, it fails and says that the modem has failed to initialise, giving fault 896?

PLEASE, can someone tell me how to make this work, as i specifically purchased this dongle to use with this netbook, so i can get internet access abroad when i visit Australia.

I should point out, i am completely new to Linux, and would prefer to keep everything stock standard at the moment as i don't wish to start installing new OS so close to when i go away.

Many, many, Thanks

Re: E169G Huawei 3G modem ...Anyone get it working?

Hello again,

Possible steps forward!

Now having set up the connection and when trying to start it, occassionally it will say Dialling modem, and will then fail saying No Carrier.

Does this just mean that the signal is not strong enough to allow the dongle to connect?

Seems strange, since i can use the same mobile network to connect with this sim card on a windows laptop, but using a different pcmcia based modem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
