Hi All, first post on here and probably the first of many daft ones as I'm new to eee pcs and linux.
Can the vga out be used as a TV out? You can get vga to svideo/composite adapters off feebay however I was wondering if anyone had tried one before I buy one?
Cheers

I think you should not have problems with that, it would depend mostly upon your TV ![]()

These simple cables only work if your VGA supports TV Out. If not, it needs a transcoder box to translate the VGA signal to PAL / NTSC. Not sure if the eee PC supports this. One for the Wiki perhaps?

Has someone tested out TV Out functionality on the eee PC. The Intel 915GM chipset is capable of TV out so I wondered if this had been implemented through the VGA out on the eee PC. If so, it would be a simple case of a cheap VGA to composite cable to use this functionality. I don't have the cable handy and I have a stripped down version of the driver on my XP build so can't test this at the moment. If it works though, it would be a great feature and possibly let me eee PC replace my PMP altogether.

I'm curious about this as well. I almost bought the cable, then read that your VGA has to support TV out for it to work. I read a few threads on here about it, but I don't remember ever finding an conclusion. Does anyone know for sure? I'd love to hook my EEE to my TV. I've used it on a friend's projector that had a VGA, and that worked wondefully.

I have the cable here, but I'm pretty sure it does not work without a transcoder box. I have tried it once before and it did not work.

You need more than just a cable. The Eee's graphics chipset does not support TV-out signal, so you will need a VGA-to-TV adapter, which usually are about $60-80+

Will something like this work?

I am surprized with so many users, no one has written an article about how to connect TV to EEE.

I ran the cable from my eee to the tv, hit the LCD/TV button and my desktop appeared on the tv. I'm running xp. My tv has a "computer in" setting.

Yes, Kent, your tv has that device that we're talking about built-in. What model is your tv?

Some LCD tvs have a vga-in port.

Is there a max resolution the eepc will work with?
My housemate has a 50" Samsung TV that is currently just connected to his PC via a VGA cable (I presume the technical stuff is built into the TV).
My question is whether the eeepc running XP can cope with a 50" display? Would there be processing issues etc? Not dealt with this stuff before

Cheers for all the info, i have ordered the cable and if it doesn't work then it was only a few quid! ![]()

It's not the size of the TV that matters, it is the resolution. Most widescreen TVs display 1360 x 768 res.

Any word yet Dave? I know you said you ordered the cable, did you get it yet?

Well, I'm looking into this too. I'd just buy the cable and try it out myself, but instead of 3 dollars the only place I found it at wants around 25 dollars :s (I'm not in the USA) I don't want to waste money just to be dissapointed.

I've purchased a splitter cable but it doesn't work on the yellow output ![]()

The cable doesn't work with my new laptop either (nvidia 9600 GT)

the answer i found isn't pretty but there is no cable that goes from lappy to tv that does this. it needs one or two other things.
a signal converter is needed (aka rescanner / transcoder etc) which are lumpy things with in and out wires / ports and normally need a seperate power supply. depending on the outputs available from that the input source on your tv to 'rgb' may need to be configured (pressing 'menu' or 'setup' and something like 'video'-'input source'.
if anybody wishes to inform the community that a wire has worked for them, they must supply all details. laptop model, modifications and enhancements, drivers used, cable manufacturer and model, television manufacturer and model, settings available on television, format of signal, and anything else like affiliation with online product vendor! nobody has fulfilled this so don't assume anything. i borrowed a projector once that worked with my eee but i never took note of the product details or specifications. it is sorely missed.
nobody who knows the eee hardware has said it's possible with a 'wire'. this is not what people seem to want to hear but i hope this is helpful.

If Eee's had TV video out support, ASUS would advertise as such.
The only way to avoid using a VGA to TV converter box is with a TV that supports "computer in" over VGA. (and only if its the proper frequency and resolution for the Eee)
Keep in mind a converter will never have as clear a picture as TV with VGA-PC in will.
