I recently purchaced an Eeepc 701 linux wrongly believing it had a modem built in . I live in a remote town and have no access to broadband , Wi-Fi and have poor mobile coverage (wont work inside house).Australian carrier Telstra Bigpond is our only provider (32Kbps). My question is about external modems (not internal unless it is easier!) that will connect to LAN port and suport linux? My nearest neighbours are 200 mtrs away so sharing is out. Is there another way to get wireless without USB SIM input. I have average computer skills so detailed solutions would be appreciated !!! I would like to stick with linux but if XP is required then so be it. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Crusty,
although I have broadband, I also wanted an alternative way to connect to the web. So I mail-ordered the US Robotics 56K USB Modem - Model 5637 because the local stores don't have it. It arrived yesterday. Works like a charm. Just plug it in and go. No driver to install :-) Go to Network - Create - Dial-up, select your device*) and enter your Username, Password and number to dial. That's it.

*) in my case: U.S.Robotics - USB Modem /dev/ttyACMO (the Eee finds it for you - great little machine)

If you just want to connect your eee, have you considered an old-style external dial-up modem (9-pin serial port on one side, and a telephone lead on the other) in conjunction with a usb-to-serial convertor cable (flat usb connector on one end, 9-pin serial connector on the other)?
But you also mentioned wireless? In that case you will need a dial-up router in conjunction with an internal or external wireless access point. Perhaps this article will help explain what is possible?
http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wire … dialup.htm
The WiFlyer mentioned there looks as though it would do the job for you, but I've no idea whether it is compatible with BigPond dialup, or whether it is still available in your country (or anywhere else...) 12 months ago the price was about 80-100 Euro.
Good luck!

Thank you all for the posts.Further tests on wireless broadband show that it is available on the NEXTG network at my property !!! This gives me the option of a USB or Ethernet connection on the Eeepc. The only herdle left is the linux OS which is not supported by the MAXON modem or TELSTRA support.MAXON are currently working with QUOZL on a work around for the modem with success .I am currently waiting for a BP3 USB modem to come up on Ebay.Local sellers of the Maxon Turbo USB modem 7.2 say they have customers bringing them back because they are "dropping out" and they have stopped selling them !This I think is a location problem rather than the product.Anyone interisted in the Maxon should visit http://www.maxon.com.au/forum/viewtopic … p;start=15 Will post results when all connected.

I ASSUME THE US ROBOTICS ONLY WORKS ON THE "XP" MODEL AND NOT ON LINUX, RIGHT? (SITE I LOOKED AT DOESN'T SHOW LINUX SUPPORTED BY THIS MINI USB MODEM ???)
EEERNIE - ARE YOU ON XP OR LINUX?

EDIT: May 27, 2008 @ 8:45pm PST USA
Found this at:
http://cpwebstore.com/56K-V.92-USB-Mode … 3FDLM0.htm
"Perfect For Asus Eee ! May 12, 2008
I just got this modem from Amazon a few minutes ago, plugged it into my 2 g surf Asus Eee (which does NOT have a dial-up modem) Asus Eee PC 2G Surf (7" Screen, 800 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 2 GB Hard Drive, Linux Preloaded) Sky Blue set up number to dial, account number and password, and it works GREAT! No Linux commands were required... it just works! I am typing this review on the Eee through the US Robotics modem. Highly recommended for any Eee user that needs dial-up."
SO... APPARENTLY THIS DOES WORK WITH LINUX. CAN ANYONE ELSE CONFIRM THAT?

EDIT: May 27, 2008 @ 9:10pm PST USA
More confusion! The US ROBOTICS 5637 site does not show LINUX being supported by this USB mini modem???
http://www.usr.com/support/product-temp … ?prod=5637
What is reality??? Does it work with LINUX as the Amazon review states or not???

My research continues...
Now I find a USR page that says the USR5637 does work with Linux 2.4.20 Kernel or higher:
http://www.usr.com/products/modem/modem … ku=USR5637
Being a Linux newbee, does the e900 have a Kernel (whatever that is?) 2.4.20 or higher?
The bottom line... can someone here tell me if I purchase this expensive USB mini modem will it just "plug in and work" ?

I need to connect now, so I took the ~$50 US plunge and purchased a US Robotics 5637 USB mini-modem today. I guess I will be the one to tell others if this modem is a "plug in and work" solution to ASUS's major error on leaving out a dial-up internal modem. IMHO no UMPC is truly MOBILE without the ability to connect via a PHONE LINE, WiFi and cable Internet, plus ability to add other wireless type connections. ASUS's minor cost savings blunder has now moved the price of my e900 from $550 US to $600 US! OUCH!!!

Hi Betty,
>EEERNIE - ARE YOU ON XP OR LINUX?
LInux -
from the 5637 Quick Installation Guide:
"Linux Kernel 2.4.20 or Higher
....
Installation of the modem under these kernels is fully automatic provided your kernel has the Plug and Play module enabled (default). You do not need to install any drivers off the USRobotics installation CD-ROM."
That's exactly how it works on the Eee. Just plug the modem in and go.
When you create your dial-up connection you'll see:
Device Details
U.S.Robotics - USB Modem /dev/ttyACM0
Good luck!

Thanks Eeernie -
Nice to know there is a plug-in USB modem that works without having to recompile (albeit at ~$50 US) for us Linux newbies. Glad I ordered it and can't wait to get this thing online.
MODERATOR: Might be worth adding the US Robotics 5637 mini USB modem (that just plugs in and works) to the add-on WIKI so others can easily find it ;-)

Yes, I picked up a US Robotics 5637 on the weekend and it is truly plug and play on the eeePC - Linux is simpler installation even than for XP or Mac users; no need to install drivers or anything, just create a connection and enter ISP dial-up and log-in details - ideal for all Linux newbies.
It is not as compact as the Zoom 3095 but it is a lot easier to get working (3095 took me over a week of trial and error, even with all the forum tips) - a neat unit but not suited for the novice.
Only question: What are other users' speed readings on the 5637 - mine don't seem to connect above 28 kbps (I get high 30's on the 3095 and high 40's on my Dell XP built-in modem, same ISP and phone line).

I also just got a USR 5637 and it works on my 701. I am very much a newbie, but it was simple to get the modem working. As canuk-BC says it seems slow. BTW I purchased my modem online at Canada Computers for C$48.99 plus a shipping charge and taxes. I also plan to use the modem on my XP desktop for when I need dialup, and that will let me remove the desktop PCI modem card freeing up a slot. Thanks canuk-BC.

It is not the moderators' job to add stuff to the wiki. Anybody who thinks this is worth adding to the wiki should do so.
