Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

Hi there, I'd really like a touchscreen in my EEE PC and i've been reading up on it. I understand that currently one has these options:

1) ditch the internal webcam usb port and install a solderless kit off ebay
2) ditch the left usb port and internally connect the touchscreen to that
3) get the ebay kit, buy an additional mini-usb hub, solder the hub to the motherboard and connect the webcam + touchscreen

Some touchscreens are supported for Windows and Linux, some for Windows only,

None of this seems good enough for me so far. Here's what I would like:

1) Continue to use the webcam
2) keep all external USB ports
3) support for Xandros Easy Mode Linux with an option to support Ubuntu or WinXP in the future
4) no decrease in battery life when touchscreen is installed (or option to switch touchscreen off to conserver battery life)
5) no soldering
6) all required parts preferably sold in a plug-and-play kit (ebay is fine)

I have a 4G and I like what it has to offer. Sacrificing one of its built-in components is just not an option. Soldering gives me the creeps - I can solder large wires together (make a plug or connect a desk lamp etc.) but I don't want to solder the delicate electronics of my EEE .
Also I wouldn't mind buying certain components seperately as long as I know they fit together.

What are my options these days???  Thanks for your help!

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

use webcam port for hub and connect touch and cam to that hub..

.. i think i saw that kind of  solderless kit on sale somewhere.

.. or ask a friend or pro to solder the touch to pcie usb points?  It is not hard at all.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

Well, you could email me....I have been known to do a few hubs, both solderless and one-wire. They are built to the users specs

I just bought one off gospeed and anxiously await its arrival. He answered all my questions and is a very friendly guy.

this is the link to fido-dido999, whom I have bought several items from.  he's been responsive to emails and quick to ship.

got this kit today.  putting it into my mom's eee tonight.  should be much easier than all the soldering that I did on mine.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

yep i got a solderless touch screen from him a month or so ago and it is awesome. when i got my 3e i loved every aspect of it and still do, but after about a month of stock use i decided it was  time to see how modable it was. i did some bios stuff i put xp on it but by far the est is the touch screen. i sacrificed the web cam for it but it was worth it by far. I've also found that i really don't have a use for a cam on a pc i can conceal in a text book. i haven't missed my cam but i cant live with out my touchscreen. Fido is the best he was very responsive to me and took care of a packaging problem before i knew what what was going on. he will definitely be receiving a large portion of my pay check. smile

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I just had confirmation from gospeed that his internal usb hub kit can be installed without soldering.
Now I need to decide which touchscreen kit to get - kiddshop or fido-dido?

I seem to remember from forum posts that kiddshop's model is technically slightly better (shorter delay), but fido-dido provides better support.
Can anyone second that?

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I have a Kiddshop on order for a customers eee, if it ever shows up! Very slow shipping, but cant really fault the sender. I will be able to provide some opinions soon (hopefully!)

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I've ordered the internal solderless USB hub (gospeed) and the solderless touchscreen kit (kiddshop).
Once I've received both and installed them I'll post the result here. Can't wait.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I have both the Fido and the Kiddshop screens.

I recently switched from the kiddshop screen to the fido one, with unsatisfactory results.

I'd suggest the kiddshop screen.
-It's more transparent
-It performs noticeably better
-Tech support was just fine from Kiddshop
-It comes with a host of extra connectors, wire, and adhesives
-Kiddshop includes instructions and documentation
-I paid about 20$ more for my Kiddshop screen than the Fido one however.
-It is slightly 'smoother' which results in a 'stickier' surface when using your finger (I use a stylus anyway). The anti-glare of the Fido screen also acts like a non-stick surface.

Note that when installed they hardly look different head-on, but the Fido screen makes the image go slightly milky at drastic angles (so drastic are these angles that screen legibility is not an issue).

See my thread for a lackluster comparison of the two screens.

I can second that. I've been in touch with him when I placed my order and he's responded to all of my questions within a couple of minutes.

Ebay and Papal doesn't come natural to me and Mr Kiddshop was very helpful.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I wish that was the case with me.  I've emailed him twice in the two weeks since i ordered and paid for my kit, and he has yet to send a reply.  Still, since I've read so many good things about his kit, i'm perfectly willing to be patient!  smile  I wonder what the average time it takes to ship to the US is for him?

I am 2 days shy of 3 weeks now... still waiting.  I am leaving on a 3 week business trip this Sunday and was hoping to have it installed by then, but losing hope on that.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

while there seems to be a slight technical advantage to kiddshop screens, the fido controller will work easily with xandros.  if you're keeping the xandros OS, fido's upgraded controller ($5 extra), is the easier way to go.

my shipments from taiwan, 3 of them now, have all come within a week.  quicker if I paid extra for EMS (3 days)... I live in the SF bay area of california.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I got my touchscreen today:

It took 13 days to get to Europe and I paid no more import taxes as it was labelled as a gift (thanks kiddshop - nice touch!)

I'll report back once I've installed it.

Re: Status of the touchscreen modding scene?

I have just bought a eGalax touchscreen, same spec as in the wiki. Does anybody know if both sides of the touchscreen is touch sensitive or I have to differentiate which side should be the front?

Install the glass panel such that its flat connector cable is at the lower left.
