EEE Black - Packaging / Unboxing / Presentation / Instructions - WOW!

With apologies to mods, I'll post in the specific 'first use' thread after my first use, but I wanted to make this very specific point about the experience simply of unboxing and getting to grips with the machine. What an absolute treat it is. It's not just that it's a laptop and hence straightforward to get to grips with, but Asus have really put some effort into the whole packaging and first looks, its the little touches like that which make a manufacturer stand out.

The machine sits (bagged of course) in a neat little perfectly formed cardboard tray which doesn't collapse once you've removed the machine and into which you could comfortably put the unit back for return, not that you'd let anyone near it again! Above the tray is a quick start guide that is lightyears from the Far East low budget tat you normally get, printed in full colour on gloss card with clear concise and well produced ENGLISH (not ENGRISH) instructions.

The tray is removable (still without collapsing or being one of those one-way cardboard filler that you can never put back together again) and beneath it are a neatly wrapped set of accessories including a very professional looking pocket user-manual, the bag, the battery (with its own neatly sealed usage instructions) and the mains lead, which to cap off the stylish high-value feel, is wrapped not with a little throwaway plastic twizzler, but a little velcro strap - another re-usable feature.

It's touches like this I expect when paying one and a half grand to Apple or to some (supposed) top of the range manufacturer who has taken time to think of literally EVERYTHING. This experience just shouldn't be possible for a 200 quid unit that already feels underpriced on components alone, I feel like I'm robbing ASUS that the whole product and packaging is so well thought out with no expense spared - Dell use forgettable brown cardboard and polystyrene on four-figure laptops.

But I've saved the best for last. The Black EEE, after being unbagged. Unbelievable. I'm really not saying this just out of excitement, but I've been following everything on here and via Google for a couple of weeks and not a single picture of the Black EEE does it justice. REALLY. It's got a finish or texture to the unit which looks very high quality and not like the washed out or solid black in pictures. It's also smaller than I expected, in a good way, its size differential really stands out.

I have a dreadfully cheap digital camera so I've no hope of improving on the photos to date, but I will try later once its charged. I would really commend the black unit to anyone, it's very rare that you buy a product that is right in so many ways and you feel like you have had (at the very least) value for money. I would have paid another 100 GBP and still have been satisfied on first look at what ASUS have put together, the attention to detail at this pricepoint is unbelievable.

No other word for it. Unbelievable. big_smile

EDIT: First of many photos I hope... trying to capture the quality of the black:

Re: EEE Black - Packaging / Unboxing / Presentation / Instructions - WOW!

It is wonderful to read your positive post, after sifting through the many negative, never-satisifed posts on this forum from those wanting a) more RAM than is really necessary, b) a different operating system, c) a bigger screen, d) a longer lasting battery, e) hibernation which might save 2 seconds of boot time, ad infinitum....and all for the same low price of course!!

The Eee PC is terrific for its price. Let us all get on and make it better by posting great hacks, wiki HOWTOs, new methods of working with the PC as it is, etcetera....instead of hoping for the next best thing to come along.

Congrats on your toy, and welcome to the family! smile

The packaging really is a treat (coming from a repeat Apple customer). I would love to see more pics of the black. I know the white pearlescent effect is very different than I expected. I like it a lot and regret it not at all, but I'm curious to hear what the black finish looks like.

Re: EEE Black - Packaging / Unboxing / Presentation / Instructions - WOW!

I posted photos of mine in this other thread and I have a couple more coming.  It's really difficult to photo this thing because it is tricky to get good lighting -- otherwise it blows out the contrast or just looks like a blackbody. We aim to please, though.

^ Here you go, as predicted my camera sucks, but I think a few still capture the quality of the black and quite how amazing the size is.

Here are the best, there is a link further below to a Flickr photo set for the rest (still adding). And as this is some time after my opening message in this thread, yes I did re-create the un-boxing, the bagging of the unit was EVEN neater than in the pics smile

Going to actually use it now and take a few more, if I can, otherwise more photos tomorrow. Incredible unit!

Is the paint flat compared to the white's glossy finish? If so, this should match my iPod classic quite well ^_^?

Speaking of iPods, Paul (citrus) told me that the plastic used for the Eee is manufactured by the same company that produces that high quality iPod plastic.

Re: EEE Black - Packaging / Unboxing / Presentation / Instructions - WOW!

I just picked up my black eee at Central Computers in Santa Clara. It looks great, but I find that the touchpad leaves a bit to be desired. The button especially is a bit to stiff. Otherwise a great looking computer. Will snap some pictures later, I guess. I will definitely install something other than this xandros, though.

Congrats! The black ones....drool. After the hulabaloo over stock, I jumped the gun and got a white one. Really wanted a black one though... Still, it works the same and the white is slowly growing on me. smile

Mine arrived like that (no exterior cardboard packaging), just an address label slapped right on the box sad

Re: EEE Black - Packaging / Unboxing / Presentation / Instructions - WOW!

Could any of you Black EEE PC owners confirm if there is a Mini-PCIe port in the memory bay? It seems the UK versions have this slot stripped out. Its not a deal breaker for me, just a little disappointing as it would be handy in the future if the 16-32gb ssd cards ever come cheap.

Well I just got my Black EEE PC from Newegg and I do have the Mini PCIe slot. I'm quite happy, but feel bad for the UK peeps that seem to be lacking this accessory slot.

I got an eee after creating the "post here when you get your eee" thread, which had over 1450 posts in it, making it the forum's largest, before I could post in it. Also, XP SP3 + 8GB transcend SDHC card + 405-999mhz eeectl
