There is not much updates in this new release, but as the volume is quite large due to OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 upgrade, this upgrade disc includes:
/usr/doc and /usr/share/doc will be purged during installation to save valuable space
Updates from ASUS up to today (March 9, 2008) included
Added 3G Network tool from ASUS to support HSDPA/GPRS
Added "Eee AP" tool from ASUS, usuage ... unknown!

Dictionary is back, some of the ASUS recovery DVD has no dictionary at all!
Installation process divided into 4 stages: remove conflicting packages, upgrade asus packages, upgrade other packages and then install extra packages

The forums on sourceforge are empty, so I hope you don't mind me asking:
Is this a one shot update to bring all the applications in the read only filesystem up to date? If so,does it take up user disk space or replace the image in the unionFS read only partition?

I agree if this is what the above post and I think it is it would be great
Can you please confirm and/or explain the exact nature of this disc - does it represent a new "restore" disc with all of the updates and all of the annoying problems fixed?

Yes, basically it includes ASUS's updates and some 3rd party upgrade for Eee PC software, all done on the first partition so it won't take up any user partition valuable space.
But disadvantage is that you need to use F9 or DVD recovery disc before adding the upgrade, due to unionfs restriction, if not, some files maybe covered by marked deleted or modified on user partition...

This has permitted me to have the entire Eee up and running with all the latests apps. And the most important part is that my SSD is close to 1.2 Gb of free space where it was below 850 Mb using the default ASUS upgrades.
You are really giving a way to keep the free space available compared to the Asus way of working.
A few notes that are problems from Asus:
- Once the Photo Manager is updated, the external module plugins are no longer available. I resolved this by installing through apt-get the digikam and digikamimageplugins packages
- Your gcin packages I removed as it was not necessary for me and I also removed scim packages
- Asus is showing that some packages need updating but to the same version so this is only an annoyance and does not affect the situation
- In order to be clean, I had first restored from the Asus DVD and then installed the XEPC 2008 March dvd

There is no 2gb kernel inside yet, will directly upgrade to latest kernel once debian guys test and merged the eeepc related patches instead of making a kernel package myself.

I already know that Wine is part of the packages included in this DVD and I needed it. But I just noticed that PCMANFM is also in there.
I tried it and it really rocks compared to the default file manager.
Anything else is an improvements over the defaults. I just added pcmanfm to the WORK tab from the. simpleui.rc file: what else?

I download the iso , I boot from disc image , I tape yes when I”m asked but ...I received a warning message after a big list on my asus screen...the package cannot be authentificated...what command I have to tape ?? thanks !! I” new in Linux stuff...so...

I am a Linux noob ...
If I understand XEPC correctly ,.. this is a "SINGLE FILE" that has an ".iso" filetype (using Windows vernacular) ... so .. to USE this thing I need some clarification ...
#1 I would DOWNLOAD this file (300Mb or so I gather) to a computer ... could be Windows or Linux just to download the file ...
#2 ... here comes the lack of clarity ... I then do WHAT exactly?? I somehow "burn" the .iso file to a DVD (or maybe a CD??) ... but when you say "burn" do you simply mean "copy the imagename.iso to the DVD?" or rather do I need to use some specific tool that "reads" the .iso file and creates a bootable DVD by reading stuff from the .iso and making boot records on the DVD as well as copying whatever is in the .iso? If so ... what software (free??) is recommended to "burn the iso" to a DVD
#3 ... Is it possible to "burn" the .iso file to a USB Flash Disk stick (4Gb for example) and then boot from THAT for installation on the Eee??
#4 if #3 not possible then I assume once I have burned the DVD then I boot THAT DVD on the Eee and it wil format whatever needs to be formatted and install the updated OS on the Eee ...
Sure would be NICE if #3 is possible ...
I used search on "XEPC" in the forum and although I did see several threads I never got the simple specific answers to questions I asked above ...

For #1 and #2: Just download the ISO and use your favourite cd burning program wil do, but make sure you are "loading" the ISO image and burn rather than "pulling" the ISO file to a DVD.
#3: Cannot copy to USB disk yet, the installation program sucks and can only be used on CDROM at the momement.
#4: It is a 2 stage process, first stage is to use ASUS's DVD to boot and then after finishing that part, boot with XEPC disc and it will do all those upgrading.
Yes, it will be nice if USB disk is possible, but need some time to figure out an easy way to let people make the USB disk themselves, in that sense, burning DVD is a lot easier for most of the people...

Yes, it is normal and you need to wait for 1-2 minutes at that screen, it will check the packages to see if any checksum error, so you can make a coffee and it will be finished within 5 minutes.
For that warning, you can safely ignore, as "normally" Linux packages are signed with something like GPG, but ASUS's and XEPC's are not. :-)

On #4 you said to boot the ASUS DVD first then the XEPC bootable DVD ... what is the purpose of Booting the ASUS DVD 1st? If I have not done anything to the base system what do I do when I boot the ASUS DVD?

If you haven't install some 3rd party's deb packages like debian/ubuntu/etc, you don't need to use the ASUS DVD, as this is just for making sure that everything is clean, included but not limited to the package database, user database, etc.

Ths is great. I have reclaimed the space I lost with the Asus updates.
A very minor niggle - how do I remove the Scim icon from my taskbar? The ways in the wiki don't work.

Removing SCIM is NOT a minor niggle for me. SCIM kills the ability to use dead keys to write accents (as in French, Spanish etc). I can't use the XEPC disk unless I know this can be removed.
Can someone give the formula for mounting the ISO image so it can be edited? then one could remove the packages one did not want. Like SCIM.
