eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

hy

i have written an gui for the eee.ko :

EEECONTROL 0.2.1 by bexbier

ENGLISH :

This Programm can control Fan and FSB and view the current status of it, its a gui for the eee.ko modul (from Andrew Tipton) a compiled version of eee.ko 0.2 is included in this deb.

INSTALLATION :

Just type in console "sudo dpkg -i /path/to/the/debfile"

NOTE: If you installed under easydektop (simplegui) then restart PC.

FUNKTION :

After Install you can find a shortcut which called "eeecontrol 0.2" on LAUNCH->APPLICATIONS->UTILITITY

On easymode you can find a shortcut at SETTINGS

The Programm starts on Systemtray, with LEFT KLICK on the icon the mainwindow would be show/hide.
With RIGHT KLICK on icon the Programm exits.

Under MANUAL CONTROL you can set the fan,fsb and vmod manually, just select on the left the speed and then klick on "set ...".

So if you want to overclock, note that you change the speed make it in some little steps, else the PC would crash.
If you would make high overclocking set VMOD on, else the system cannot run stable and may crash.

Under AUTOCONTROL you can set some parameters for autocontroled fan: (for example:)

starttemp = 57 ( temperature to start the fan )
startfan = 100 ( fan would be set at 100% )
stoptemp = 55  ( temperature to stop the fan )
stopfan = 0    ( fan would be set at 0% )

So .... with these options the fan starts with 100% if the temperature is 57°C and "stops/runs slow" if the temperature is 55°C.
NOTE: the stop parameters must be smaller then the start parameters.

RUN AUTOCONTROL AT STARTUP = autocontrol starts at PROGRAMM STARTUP
RUN EEECONTROL AT STARTUP = eeecontrol starts at PC STARTUP

CHANGES ON THESE MENU WOULD ONLY BE SET IF YOU CLICKED ON "SET CONFIG" !
AUTOCONTROL RUNS ONLY IF THE PROGRAMM IS AKTIV ( ICON IN SYSTEMTRAY) !

DEINSTALLATION :

Just type in Console "dpkg -r eeecontrol" If eeecontrol is running, close it bevor deinstalling.

NOTE : This Pakage use his own eee.ko so if you have installed an ee.ko then deinstall it first.

ATTENTION !! IF EEECONTROL IS RUNNING AND YOU SHUTDOWN OR RESTART, THE FAN WOULD RUN WITH THE LAST PARAMETER, SO IF YOU DO NOT SET THAT EEECONTROL AND AUTOCONTROL RUNS AT STARTUP YOU SHOULD EXIT EEECONTROL BEFORE SHOUTDOWN OR RESTART.

AT LEAST : THE WRITER GIVES NO WARRENTY OF DAMAGED HARD OR SOFTWARE, WITH THESE PROGRAMM YOU CAN DESTROY YOU MASCHINE SO TAKE CARE WITH IT !!

CHANGELOG:

0.2.1
-Added full simpledesktop integation
-fix shutdown, hope now it works if fsb changed at end.

Please deinstall the older version first. before install

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

Does this tool require the user to already have his own self-compiled eee.ko?

DeathKnight, Looks like he mentions that it comes with an eee.ko module.

eee_and_me, can you repost the file? The rapidshare link doesn't seem to be functional.

Thanks,
Triften

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

This would be cool. If I understand correctly, the only way to overclock atm is reverting to a certain bios, or recompiling, or installing Windows to use the tool, right?

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

I don't think that's correct... you should be able to tweak the fsb as long as you can get eee.ko installed.

If you're having trouble installing eee.ko, eFfem's instructions worked for me:
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=9797&p=5

I haven't tweaked the fsb yet, but the item is there in /proc/eee/. I plan on taking a look at the assorted frontends people have posted.

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

Hi eee_and_me, thank you so much for sharing this great program of yours.

My 8G eee have a struck fan running at 100% all the time. I hope I can make use of this program to fix the noise maker. I am running the stock Xandros simple interface and new to this OS. My Windows background doesn't help here.

Can you walk me through how to install and run it? I download the program in my document folder. I think this is what I need to do, please correct me if I am wrong:
For Installation
1) CTL+ALT+T;
2) "sudo dpkg -i /"my document"/eeecontrol-0.2.0.deb"
For execute
1) CTL+ALT+T
2) eeecontrol

Can you help to make an icon in the utility tab under simple mode? Better yet, is there a start up script that can modify to start up this great program when the OS boot?

Thanks for the help.

NO .... a compiled version of eee.ko 0.2 is in the deb file included so you only install the deb file and you can start showing/switching fan and fsb.

I have taken the liberty of putting this on the wiki, here.

As I have not yet installed this, I would be grateful if someone who has would check the wiki and edit it appropriately.

Thanks for this. tool  I'm still trying to work out what the problem with Easy Mode is meant to be.  If it is just that it doesn't autostart on boot, that's no problem, I just put an icon in my Settings tab. Once runn9ng it outs the system tray icon in place and appears to work.

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

Using the method for Running a script at startup for Easy Mode to create a startup file in /home/user/.icewm, I get eeecontrol in my system tray on boot.

The contents of my /home/user/.icewm/startup are

Code:

#!/bin/sh

sudo /usr/bin/eeecontrol

I have no clear idea whether sudo is necessary or whether there are some safety measures that should be built in but for the moment it works for me.

If that works, i'm going to feel like a Linux demi-god smile

You may need to PM SublimePorte or marf as their tools can restart the GUI without restarting the machine.

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

eee_and_me, I played around your the program the other day. Mucked with the FSB until my eee froze (with a gltched screen). smile

Does your program have a feature to adjust when the fan comes on? If not, do you plan on adding it?

Thanks,

hi triften

planed is that, but at moment i do not impleted this so if than for example you set the fsb to 100 and you maschine crshed, at restart the programm will set it  again and you have an loop ( maschin start -> fsb autoset ->maschine crashed->maschine restart ..... and so on)  but i still try to find a way to make it safety wink

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

hy

i have uploaded the new version take a look on first post of this thread;)

if u have installed a older version deinstall it before install the new one.

and NOTE: if you made the autorun for easydesktop from Niel1952 wiki , delete it before running the new version.
I use the autostartfile in .kde/Autostart for easydesktop too(its eaysier to have one  for all), so the file in .icewm didnt needed.

Hi

On the picture of Easy Mode that you have added in the first post, there is no icon in the status bar.  Is this right?

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

Does the new version of eeecontrol not auto start in Easy Mode? It doesn't seem to on my eee.

The status bar icon ony appears when I press the icon on the desktop (which is still my icon - where can I get a gopy of yours?)

Re: eeecontrol 0.2 ( fan and fsb control )

I'm not with my eee right now but I know my working simpleui.rc is at /home/user/.AsusLauncher/ . Does your installation amend that one or only the one at opt/...?

The same is probably true of startsimple.sh

This will affect other people who follow the Absolute Beginners wiki artcle or use some of the other GUI tools in Easy Mode.
