all in screen area. the touchscreen controller, the bluetooth controller, 8gb drv all trimmed to fit. USB hub was not trimmed and fit easily.
see pictures added.
I also added the left speaker to the right side. All hooked to exisitng USB camera hook up on mainboard.
this is the fido touchscreen.
was a tight fit.
USB 4 port 2.0 hub
4 port hub with dingles fresh out of the box
bottom side of 4 port usb hub, left wires going to camera, right to touchscreen controller. I then hot glued onto ASUS EEE lid left side where speaker was.
close up of hub solder points for the 4 ports. view is with original manufacture wires still attached.
completed

bluetooth controller trimmed, generic bluetooth.
Touchscreen controller, trimmed and hook ports not removed but some plastic trimmed off of ports for clearence.
Anti glare and screen untouched.
there is a small amount of increase of width to lid but still closes fine. I trimmed some of the speaker plastics on left side and some small plastic posts for wire guides with a dremel.

Very impressive that you fitted all of that in the screen - would like to see a side view shot of the case closed

nice work.

how's your wifi reception? I thought about doing the same thing, but wanted to keep the wifi antennae clear of copper obstructions. I'm stealing wifi from my neighbor so I need all the signal I can get.
(he knows I'm stealing it, he's fine with it)

I didn't notice any change with my wifi, I was worried of a lose also but seems to work the same.
I was surpariased to fit it all in also. my only tuff part was the left speaker, I don't really use the speakers very often but wanted both channels. the sound is not great with the speaker behind the panel, but then the speakers are not that good anyways. I hook up to my home pc speaker when i want to have good sound anyways.
I will take a closed lid picture tonight after work.
as for the hot glue on the screen i basically only applied small dabs with most being on the lcd screen not the touch scrn, just enough to stop it from moving around.
Thanks all on the forum with your ideas, could not of done it with it ya.
cheers

@calrac
very good job
i didn't think that all this would fit into the display area
i love the idea of the hub in the screen area, as you only need one set of 4 cables of wiring instead of one set for every usb device there
i'm going to go for your mod and move my 16gb memory from the bay area to the screen (i never remove it anyways)

nice job! I too was thinking to have most of my boards in the lid, with maybe a couple usb access ports from the ram door, with flash drive and mouse transmitter.
looking forward to side view picture.

sweet. I'm only gonna stick my tranciever b+b (bits and bobs, american readers) up in the screen area (so thats BT, GPS (if it works), 3G antenna, and DVB-TV if I get it.) , but I'm gonna keep my drives downstairs.
Since I'm not going to get a touchscreen, I don't care about that.
Well done though.

looks like the same one, I also bought another one that i did not take apart and using for my other laptop and it is a no name brand and looks just like the one you bought.
only on screw behind the label to get into it.
So far the hub is working flawless. Not sure of linux I don't have linux on my laptop, but i do on my main pc as dual boot I will try later.

Wow thanks for the link, hopefully it the same inside.

@calrac,
Great post. I can't believe how much hardware you got installed in the display area. I liked that octopus hub so much that I ordered one last night. I hope it has the same internals as yours.
I noticed that the plastic around the screen doesn't close completely (on the left outside edge). Is it the hub or the connectors on the controller that are holding it open? I am worried that the hub might be too tall.
Thx,
JDtucson

Hey JDtucson, was wondering when someone was going to ask of the bulge in the middle. Glad you asked. It is actually due the little clip along the edge for the front and back of lid to snap together broke off when i was hacking with my dremel, dam i guess I shouldn't drink some much LOL.
I can easily squeze the buldge together.
It is a very tight fit mostly the area of the lid not so much the thinkness.
Hope it all works out for everyone that try this. I took me about 4 hrs to do.
For the wires I used a floppy drv ribbon and striped down to 4 wires from the motherboard to the hub. I then used wires from a Cat 5 cable and just stripped the outercase shell and used the internal wires. the cat 5 solid core wires were used to go to the components.
I will try to pull the cover and take some close ups. I also dremeled the lid hinges basiically cut off the inside edges that is hidden under the bottom cover when assembled.
just did that so it is easier to take the lid off with out taking the bottom cover off.

ya know what i may just do the same
except instead of having oooo so much jammed in the screen
ill just drop it down and resolder the wires for extension so i wont have to relocate speaker
thanks for the bit of inspiration

more photo's
Hinge of lid trimmed so it is easy to remove lid without removing base cover.
Close up of USB Hub, Touch screen controller & 8gb usb drive
Touch screen controller close up
Side view no lid
Another USB hub which is almost the same as the one I added to my EEE except one USB outlet has the mini USB plug, internals is identical.
I earlier mentioned only 1 screw which in fact is 2 screws to remove under label.
I also earlier mentioned I did not trim the USB hub board but i did just forgot, I trimmer the top of the hub a small amount to fit around lid left upper screw area.
I'm sure others could get this to fit better and neater if they remove the hook ups on the touch screen controller and solder to the board instead, I'm not to fussy of what it looks like under the hood and wanted to be able to use the plugs on the touchscreen controller incase i decide to use some where else.

Does the camera port provide enough power for allthose devices or have you got your 5V supply from elsewhere?
Offline
my power is as follows
mass storage (8gb Mem stick) = 200 ma
usb touchscreen controller 44ma
bluetooth = 0 ma
usb composite device (camera) 500ma
the hub has only 1 5v supply and output is 500ma per port.
