Would anyone care to share thoughts about removal strategies for specific scenarios? For example, some will have a primary goal of reducing the disk space foot print and others will care more about reducing memory utilization. Others will want both equally. Etc.
Edit: This post wasn't optimally worded. Beyond disk space and RAM utilization there is also the fact that removing a given core framework or application will limit future application or system choices. Just another example consideration (or a hub to actual considerations I guess).

this guide was great and got me up and running on my first day with the Eee! I am new to nLite and have a question:
One of my apps requires dot net 3.0 and the install for this fails saying that the "BITS" service isn't running. It's not installed as part of the suggested nLite options in this thread; any way I can update my nLite settings and extract just that piece to install?
I guess you need re-install. I'm not expecting install too much application in EEE. Just use it as a little toy for movie, music, email, internet and maybe GPS. I don't need .net, so I take it off.

Does this require a real working serial number and will it be able to update the operating system ? I remembered they having the genuine test thing..

You still have to use your legit XP cd and activate it. You can preload your serial when you prep it with nLite.

no worries...I recognize the trade-offs here. anyone have an idea how I can figure out what option within nLite to re-enable? there wasn't a service called "BITS" in the configuration screens. maybe turn on Windows Update?

BITS = Background Intelligent Transfer Service and this is a service...
it is included in SP2 (one of the versions of it anyway...)
but you might be better off with this link:

Torowl, would you mind editing your original post to add the wiki link? I did a basic conversion with very little change.
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:nlitexp
Would also be nice if you could edit either your post or the wiki to reflect any changes that were discussed after the original post. (Or perhaps someone else would be so kind as to volunteer).

thanks, I went through the setup screens for nlite and found the BITS service. I will try to include it, rebuild, reinstall, and see if it solves the problem. I just hope that that is the only service that is needed for Dot Net CF 3.0.

I followed the tutorial and burned the CD.
However I was unable to boot up the system. I could get into the blue screen but received a message recognizing my slimline XP CD.
The message said "Please enter the CD titled Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2" into Drive A.
Can someone help?

after i am done with 1-17 and have burnt the ISO file to a CD. What do i do? Do I move all the files to my external hd then plug it into the eee and open the .exe file? I'm a noob here and don't want to mess things up. Thanks All, Brandon

it needs something like bootable for the HDD to make it run. i cant get it work either lol i wish i had a external CD drive damn it. so i can just boot it then install maybe ![]()

Uhm, when I tried to do this the first time, I failed. my legit pro copy is old as balls, as I've never seen a reason to get a new disc. I'm trying integrating SP2, and I'll let you know how it goes, but keep in mind: if your CD has SP1 or no SP's, integrate SP2.

Worked great for me - though I enabled the bits discussed earlier in the thread to allow for the .NET stuff (and some other random bits) - I recommend checking what you're disabling if you're unsure. If in doubt, leave it in.
Thanks OP and others.

I didn't get any hiccup when install the drivers. I'm using the restore DVD, running setup.exe, and choose instAll. After few re-boot, everything is OK.
I can connect my wireless router using either Windows wireless connection or Atheros. Card reader also OK, I can watch Divx from the SD card. I didn't try webcam with Skype, however, if I open My Computer and double click USB Video Device, I can see myself from there.
Does your USB Video Device shows up in your desktop too?
Mine does and I can't get rid of it. Any ideas how to hide it?
Something like "hide the recycle bin icon" tweak?
Thanks in advance!

The "USB Video Device" icon is inside "My Computer". Did you try this:

I have nlited "Desktop Cleanup Wizard" in my Windows installation, I can not run Desktop Cleanup Wizard. Maybe you can try it to see if it works.

I NLited a lot of stuff, and now my XP keeps complaining about critical battery life every time I boot up... Anyone knows what's up with that?

Great! I will try this on my eeepc as soon as it gets into my home.
Why is computer-companies and others charging plenty of bucks for so little when guys like this makes a better job for nothing except our happiness?

I will look into this.. Right now my XP install is taking up a huge amount of space!!

I nLite'd my eee a week or so ago and was happily enjoying very fast bootup times and responsiveness (2GB ram, no page file). However, I had trouble installing iTunes and installing pdanet (for my Treo/Centro). These were two pretty non-essential apps, so I didn't think much of it. I then wanted to use an old Logitech usb mouse which has worked in pretty much every computer I've had for the last 5 or so years. I couldn't get it to work on my eee!
Anyhow, I installed a full blown version of XP and had no troubles with the mouse, pdanet or iTunes, but I'm back to a bloated XP install :-(
I'm tempted to try nLite again and/or another "package" of XP, but really don't want to run into this problem again. Any suggestions / hints?
