What are other notebooks under 4lbs (1.8KG) and under 2000USD?

what I can think of off the top of my head:
Fujitsu lifebook p1510 (8.9" tablet, roughly eee size, $1200 start)
Sony Vaio TX and TZ ($1800 start on both, 11.1" 2.8 pounds)
Toshiba portege r500 ($1700-1800 start, 12.1", 1.8-2.4 pounds depending on config)
Sony Vaio Picturebook (depending on model you can find them from $200-$1000, about 6x9", 9inch screen, 2.2 pounds)
those little laptops you see all the hospital workers with
i forget what it's called, but there's this (failed) ultraportable attempt sony made, 10" screen and it's like 0.8" thick (edit - I guess it's actually $3000, so forget that one (http://www.engadget.com/2004/05/12/sony … o-america/))
yea I've looked at ultraportables a bit too much...

Before the EEE came out, there was a very vociferous user community around Averatec, which was making affordable 3.5-pound laptops. See, e.g. Averatec 1579, with Core Solo and really nice 11.1" screen, for under $900. The older 1000 series (discontinued, find it on eBay) had Celeron/Pentium M, ran around $700, and I've successfully gotten 3-4 hours of real-life battery time (using Office, not watching DVDs).
However, Averatec seems uninterested in going even smaller, and their once unbeatable prices are now approaching the price of more well-known manufacturers. Possibly due to fall of US dollar and their unwilingness/inability to eat the difference.
Everex makes some under 4-pound Stepnotes that also run under $700. Reputed to have poor battery life.
But now that the EEE is out, I'm placing my hopes for an affordable ultraportable on it. And they've made the right trade-offs (no DVD, SSD instead of HD) for weight. That took guts because it removed some of the more popular sticker features.

Actually, Asus is famous for ultra portable laptops with affordable price (compared to Japanese brands). Many of Asus 11"-12" laptop models are below 4lb and $2000. You can check their latest models on Newegg. I myself have a 12" Asus laptop (M2500, a three year old model) weights only 3.7lb and cost me only $1100. Averatec's laptops are much cheaper indeed, but they just simply re-branded laptops made by second tier laptop ODMs that are either relatively inexperienced or focused on low-cost manufacture. As a result, Averatec's quality is poor and their laptops are much heavier them laptops of the same sizes from other brands like Asus and Sony etc. This is especially true for Averatec's earlier models.

There's also the XO Laptop (from the One Laptop Per Child project). Starting today, you can donate $400 to get one laptop for you and another for a child in need through their Give One Get One program.
It may not be the general-use laptop that the Eee is (or maybe it is, I don't really know), but it's got all sorts of fancy tech like a stylus writing area, a screen that can switch to black and white mode to save power, gamepad buttons, etc.

I purchased the Everex Stepnote SA2052T (12.1", Core Duo, Vista Home Premium just over 4lbs) from BestBuy for $599. They still have some. It's similar, if slightly thicker, to the Dell D430s in dimensions (I use the Dell at work).
It comes with 2 batteries, 1 lasts 1.5 hours the other lasts 3. I don't know why they included the 1.5 hour battery, I just use it when I'm at home so I don't wear out the big one.
It's OK. No replacement for the eee, I'm still itching to buy one because even at 4lbs it's just too darn big for the kind of holster computing I dream of.
But when it comes to editing video and stuff, I'm going to do it on my Stepnote not on the eee. ![]()

The Fujitsu Lifebook 1610 tablet - 8.9" screen, just a hair larger than the EEE.
Fujitsu Lifebook 810 tablet - 5.6" screen, much smaller than the EEE.
Newegg has both of these, much cheaper than other places I've seen.
