Thought I'd keep this thread simple - instructions for connecting to the internet on an EEE through your Sony Ericsson k800i (or other modern SE phone) and the included data cable.
First install wvdial
sudo apt-get install wvdial
Then plug the phone into the USB and select phone mode
back in the terminal:
wvdialconf (which should set up your modem)
Now load the admin file manager (applications --> system--> admin tools) and navigate to
/etc/wvidal.conf
Now google and find the connection settings from your mobile provider (the following works with three), make the changes and save
I had to change the phone number to *99#. I was also told the username and password should be blank but it would not be connected so i left them as "username" and "password".
To connect to the internet now all you need to do type wvdial (and press ctrl + c when you finish)
You may need to restart firefox if it still is trying to reconnect from your last settings.
Interestingly enough when I did this it sends me first to a three page where it recommended buying a 1gb data allowance for 5 gbp a month ($10) otherwise all data is charged at 2 gbp per megabyte!!!

I am new to Linux. I follow the instructions. However, after I type wvdial, it returns with message - cannot find /dev/modem . Please advise what is wrong? Is my wvdial package not alright or the address of the usb modem not alright?

I've just had the same problem trying to connect my k800i on t-mobile UK's web & walk. I ran wvdialconf again, and suddenly it was OK. A lot more settings were in /etc/wvdialconf the second time I looked at it (the first time was when following the instructions above, the second was after running wvdialconf again). So I've not been very scientific, but I'm glad to have it working!

Hi,
I just wanted to thank you for your post. With it I was able to get the BlackJack tethered over USB.

Finally got it working
Being a Linux noob I didn't know anything about configuring Debian Repos or even that they existed, so the past couple of hours have been a steep (yet worthwhile) learning curve.
For the uninitiated wvdial isn't installed by default and in order to install it, you need to tell Linux where to locate it. Repositories containing compatible packages can be found here
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/addingxandrosrepos
add them to /etc/apt/sources.list
i did this by using the following method
crtl+alt+t (to open terminal)
sudo bash
pico /etc/apt/sources.list
added the URLs of the sources
saved the sources.list file
then continued as per rbeers instructions.
If errors are encountered at any stage, ensure that you are running the command with sufficent permissions.

I followed the steps listed above to download and install. Username/password for O2 Mobileweb (works on the phone).
Checked wvdial.conf for typos - retyped username/password just to make sure correct. Tried with Username/password fields blank.
As a linux noob I'm now in way above my level of knowledge :-) .
Can anyone help me to get this working please? Cheers.

Sound like you're almost there, problem may be permissions related. Have you tried
ctrl alt t
sudo bash
wvdial

Sorry I haven't been checking this thread but I'm really pleased some people found my instructions useful. I feel a bit bad I didn't write more definitive instructions now.
Just thought I would add that for those in the UK, three charges you a £5 surplus to use your phone as a modem but they can't find out if you don't tell them so just sign up for their £5/1gb handset deal.

Thanks for latest post rbeer, I was wondering about that. Don't suppose you're any good with citrix?? ![]()

Just a caution about signing up for a standard phone data plan, which is obviously much less than a PDA or laptop plan. Tethering a more sophisticated device is usually prohibited under the phone only plans. Just be aware that using those devices on a regular basis may result in a lot of data usage, far more than one would expect just using a phone. I do it occasionally in locations where I might need to check email and no wifi is available, but I wouldn't sit and surf for hours or download a lot of files. You can bet the cell providers can detect unusually high usage on an unlimited phone data plan.

Thanks for the heads-up RainmanP. Luckily I have an O2 Bolt-on of 'Unlimited' data per month (Fair use of 200Mb) per month (cost £7.50 in UK).
I'm itching to use some of this from the 3e if anyone can help with the problem set out above :-)

Bump.
Sorry for the repeat, but I'm at the end of my tether - pun intended :-)
Ref my previous posts on getting wvdial to work with my tethered Nokia N95 (3g connection).
Here is my wvdial.conf script. When I run it my phone seems to connect, but immediately disconnects (see connection dialogue above):
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
ISDN = 0
Phone = *99#
Password = password
Username = mobileweb
Settings are for O2 UK mobileweb (works on handset).
can anyone please tell me if they see anything wrong with the above script and if so how can I get the connection working.
If I can't get this working on Xandros, I may have to install XP on my 3e and I
really want to stick with it. Thanks for any help offered.

OK - Success! I got it working by cobbling together various wvdial.conf script settings found both on this forum and others. So WooHooo!
However, one final question on this: The connection seems a bit slow for 3G, am I limiting the baud rate in the wvdial.conf script with the line 'Baud = 460800'?
If so what should should I set it at please?
:-)

tried this. no wvdial to install just use the standard network connections app and add a dial up connection using your mobile phone. http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=2109 . this uses the data connection already configured on your phone.

Thanks for the heads-up tborja, Got that working (am connected through the N95 as I type). Seems an easier way to initiate a connection. Cheers.

How does one start a dial connection settings wiki for the different telcos that members have tried and gotten working?

Now load the admin file manager (applications --> system--> admin tools) and navigate to

Thanks for that. I don't have an EEE (yet) but I do have a K800 (although may be getting a K850 soon) so I'm hoping to be able to use this.

Hello...my name is Steve. I found this forum just yesterday. I am a new eee
user (and a TOTALLY NEW Linux user). I am trying to get my Motorola v360
connected as a USB modem. I already got everything working successfully on my Win XP laptop in just a few
minutes, but now I'm suffering from "n00b syndrome" here!
I have plugged the phone into my eee, with my USB cable. I believe I have set up a
dial-up connection, but it may not be done correctly. When I select the Properties button
for the connection, and go to the Hardware tab, the phone shows up under "Device" as:
Motorola Phone (V360), and under "Details" as: /dev/ttyACMO. Maybe it should show
up as a modem, not as a phone???
I have tried to do some things I already read here in various other posts, starting with (as I
understand it) downloading WVDIAL. When I try that, I get a message: "Couldn't find
package wvdial." However, as I mentioned, my knowledge/experience with Linux is next
to nil! Some of what appear to be obvious, basic instructions, make no sense at all.
When I try to use the Dial Up Connection, my phone shows: "Initializing Modem", then
"Dialing *99#", then "Please Wait", then "Not Available". As an aside, when I set it all up
in my XP laptop, the Dial Up Connection let me proceed WITHOUT entering any User
Name or Password, as that it what T Mobile requires (and it works fine). The Dial Up
Connection set-up process on my eee would not let me do that. Don't know if that's part
of the problem!!??
If anyone feels like helping me tackle this, I would be extremely happy and
appreciative...Thanks so much!!!!
Steve
P.S. I'm running in Easy Mode

UPDATE on Message #23:
I've spent approx 8 hours learning a small bit about Linux, modems, etc. I've tried several times to connect via my Motorola v360 with my USB cable (works on my XP latop).
Here's where I'm at currently...
1. Installed wvdial
When I run it, I see:
WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.56
Cannot get information from serial port.
Initializing modem.
Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
Sending ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
Modem initialized.
Configuration does not specify a valid phone number.
Configuration does not specify a valid login name.
Configuration does not specify a valid password.
2. My wvdial.conf file reads like this:
[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com"
Modem Type = USB Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
ISDN = 0
; Phone = *99#
; Password = [none]
; Username = voicestream
(Some of those settings I got from other posts. I've changed them around with no luck).
Suggestions / input welcomed!!
Thanks,
Steve
