...for a much higher price, no doubt. I'm happy with what I've got. By the time I'm done with this guy, I'll be buying the ASUS EEEEEEEEE which will have a folding keyboard and a 10 inch 3D view screen and a built in mini-bluray drive and a 7 TB SSD. And it will cost $400.

THe microphone is in a better place and they kept the webcam too.
I wonder if it's a transreflective display.

Dude, it makes me tickled pink about this. Can't wait for the official update! And Engadget had it right - those conversion rates are hurting A LOT right now.

Looks like I'll finally be buying mine if it's $499 or less.

well, it looks like the pricing will be still the same, at least in euro-land ... according to eeepcnew.de
they sell from €299 to €399 ... €399 will buy the 12G ... available this summer!

looks to be the same size, with a larger screen. same ports, and with a ram door on the back it appears. What I don't see are any speakers, which might have yet to be put in on these prototypes
EDIT: they also got rid of the phone jack, finally. Looks alot nicer than the robber plugged hole they had on the 7 inch

I'm so gonna get one of them!! ![]()
Unless I'm mistaken it looks like they upgraded the camera too: 1.3mp vs 0.3mp.

it is larger, and thicker by appearences. The touchpad looks like it has a nice size upgrade too.

I see the close up of the descriptive card notes the new generation will have a 1.3M camera . . . . . . I wonder what other improvements remain hidden so far . . . . .

Remember it is just an announcement. It will probably be a few months before they are even for sale.

I wouldn't worry about it, they're still many many months away.

It will be on sale this summer

I just want to know the resolution of the screen...
A 9" screen is nicer than the 7" I've got now, but not if it still has 800x480 pixels...

"All of these new models will be Windows ready..." Does that mean they *come* preinstalled with Windows or that Windows *can* be installed (in which case, it is no different from today). The fact that they specifically mention "Windows ready" worries me. Of course, one can always delete Windows and install some flavor of Linux, but:
- Users who don't intend to use Windows have to pay the additional built-in cost of a Windows license
- Asus is no longer compelled to ensure its hardware is Linux compatible; it will be up to end-users and those who develop eee PC specific distros to try to make the on-board hardware work

Apparently they'll also announce new EEEs with better processors

I REALLY hope that asus has gotten the Menlow platform (Silverthorne) processor in these suckers. Diamondville... ehhh. I couldn't justify buying an eeepc for the sole purpose of a larger screen. One thing I would like is to play 720p-1080p MKV files, and I'm almost sure that Menlow could handle this, however also that R/W Speed of the SSD would have to improve I think to handle the large streaming bitrate of the 720p files.
All in all, New Processor/Platform, and Faster R/W on the SSD. I'm sold.
If not, then I'll keep my 701 until a newer gen eeepc comes out with more horsepower.

I noticed that the closeup of the info card states:
Card Reader: MMC / SD / SDHC
That's certainly good news (if true and not just advertising verbiage). Although I've had no problems (knock on wood) with either of my 8G or 16G Patriot SDHC cards, I know that many people have had a lot of frustration with the internal card reader on the current units and the "does it support SDHC or not and if it does why doesn't my SDHC card work" question.
(edit) And oddly enough, I just noticed that the info card for the current 4G model also shows the card reader as supporting MMC / SD /SDHC... interesting. I think that's the first time I've seen anything 'official' from Asus that flat out says that SDHC cards should work in the current models.
