Useful Eee Links

I think we really need a sticky with all the useful applications that the Eee has to offer.

I have wanted to have a bigger resolution for the past 2 months and only JUST found a hacked driver that allowed me to set 800x600 with no scrolling!

If anybody has any links to programs, or anything on this site that should be made known, please post it up.
It would save alot of not only threads, but everybody's time in general!

And sticky this if we get good responses. I'll edit this 1st post and put everything you guys add.
I understand there are other threads like this, but none of them are organized. What's the point of a thread 8 pages long with no organization if your desperately trying to find that one link?

This thread will be clean, organized, and right to the point!

Thanks, ps2cho

Re: Useful Eee Links

It's a great offering.

As to wiki vs forum, perhaps you can run it for a while on the forum, then when it's well-developed with plenty of input, systematize it and move it to the wiki.

Many thanks!

I'm not sure. You will have to go to the site and find a contact link. Ask the developer.

Re: Useful Eee Links

Is that not the driver that lazertag did and someone else claimed it to be their work.
If so, its a know problem with that diver and all you can do is set the comp not to go into sleep mode or use another modded driver and one of the small programs on this forum to swap between 800 x 480 and 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768.

It was not quite so simple for me so, here is what I did.

Get the drivers as above, but then you have to insert a line in the cfadisk.inf file (see this discussion http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2213125.php)

The line I inserted in the [cfadisk_device] section of the .inf file was
%Microdrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,USBSTOR\DiskUSB2.0__CardReader_SD0__0100

The last bit "USBSTOR\DiskUSB2.0__CardReader_SD0__0100" is got from the registry using regedit

navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR"
then to the line starting "Disk&Ven_USB2.0&Prod_CardReader_"
in there is another foulder, all numbers, when you click on this the right hand window shows some details, the line you want is "HardwareID". Right click on HardwareID, pick modify and copy the first identifier, that's what you use in the .inf file. This should be "USBSTOR\DiskUSB2.0__CardReader_SD0__0100" but not sure if they are the same on all EEEs.
WARNING - don't change the entry in regedit

Then update as in the original instructions and reboot.

Re: Useful Eee Links

I have a few questions about some of the programs listed above:

First, is it safe to mount my SDHC card? It's 8GB, and I was thinking about mounting it so I can install some games. Do I need to mount it in the first place to do this? I wanted to install Steam and Audiosurf, but wasn't sure if it needed to be mounted first.

Second, is enabling a ramdisk a good idea? I have 2GB of RAM installed, but wasn't sure if it's safe or reliable to use a ramdisk.

Last, is the modified graphics driver required to play games like CS? Is there no other way to get the game to work properly without it?

Re: Useful Eee Links

what is the benefit of having PortableApps on the EEE as opposed to having the separate programs installed? i installed it on a flash drive and ended up taking approx. 380mb. any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

btw, thanks a lot for that link. i had never heard of PortableApps before until I read it here and love it. i put it on a 512 USB drive that i have on my key ring so anywhere i go i have everything i would need.

Re: Useful Eee Links

bump.

Yes portableApps is great. The benefits are that there there are no installations == no registry keys and other clutter slowing down windows. Its just fast and to the point.

Yes mounting any size SDHC is fine. Its all software, nothing can go wrong to the hardware itself. At the very worst scenario, hit the roll back driver button and you'll be back to how it was before.
