Thought I would share my experiences backing up my 4G eee to a Veho 8GB SD card and making that card bootable enabling back up and restore without the need of a USB stick/DVD drive etc.
The main issue I had was that the Acronis software would not make the SD card bootable this was very odd as it makes bootable USB sticks with no problem well at least on 2-4GB Kingston data traveler sticks. So while backups to the SD were possible I needed the USB stick to boot the Acronis program. After much messing about trying to get a bootable SD card from the Acronis software the solution that worked for me was:
1) Follow instructions for making a bootable USB stick at http://www.bay-wolf/usbmemstick/htm
2) Follow the instructions fully with the exception that you use an SD card instead of USB stick.
3) On completion of the above run the Acronis make bootable media option on the same SD card
4) Delete all system files that were not installed by Acronis from the SD card ie msdos/iosys etc
5) Install SD on eee, hold esc while booting select the SD card & Acronis will boot.
I can now backup and restore simply and reliably from the SD card without needing a bootable USB stick. I am sure there are other ways of achieving the same result but was simple to achieve & works.

I think you got the link wrong.
What version of Acronis are you using?
How do you know which system files were not made by Acronis onto the SD to delete?
How large is your backup image?
How many clicks from boot to a restored eee?
Thanks in advance!

I use Acronis V9, fairly easy to set up, and easy to use; 8gb Transcend, backups with modest compression are 1.1gb.

http://www.bay-wolf.com/usbmemstick.htm
is the correct URL. I'm booting ATI 10 having used the old HP utility first to fix my SD card. Question: is there a Linux alternative to using the HP utility?

If you do a search for gfoot's backup utility there's mention of a mbr.bin file that can be used in linux to the same effect.

Acronis 11
Just 3 as I recall msdos/iosys/configsys
Size is just over 1GB
I guess around 6 clicks and all done in 3 minutes.
So you can have an image of a stock eee with Linux and another image of XP or whatever and swap operating systems in around 3 minutes. In my experience you would be hard pushed to find an easier/quicker/more user friendly way of backing up and restoring an eee.

I had trouble using this technique on a new 4GB toshiba USB stick. I finally had success by using the above process on a 2GB USB stick I had and than transferred the acronis files over to the 4GB Toshiba stick (I did make it bootable using the HPtool). Anyway, thanks for the tips and you may have to use a different approach depending on your USB stick.

Excellent!
Works perfect on my 901 with one little problem: the second partition on the 4GB drive gives a problem. Has anybody any information about this?
