[BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

**UPDATE July 16 2008**

Current Version = 0.4.1 Beta

I haven't tested this. If you could be so kind to let me know if it works.

**UPDATE APR 19 2008**

Current Version = 0.4 Beta

Screenshot
http://www.infinitedesigns.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/snapshot04.thumbnail.png

Installation
- Open a terminal (Ctrl + alt + t)
- Enter the command

Code:

wget http://www.infinitedesigns.org/eeepc/tweakeee_0.4-0.i386.deb

- Next enter the command

Code:

chmod +x tweakeee_0.4-0.i386.deb

- Finally Enter this command to start the installation

Code:

sudo dpkg -i tweakeee_0.4-0.i386.deb

- To run the program, you can either type in a terminal tweakeee or in the Settings tab there should be an icon for TweakEEE

FAQ: TweakEEE Isn’t Opening after I install

If you are one of those 2G or European owners, (and even non North American perhaps, hard to keep track of which EEE’s sold in which regions are bundled with what software and libraries) and you install TweakEEE and then execute the program but nothing happens, then you will have to follow these steps.
- Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t)
- Enter the command fix_tweakeee
- Make sure you have an internet connection before starting. It will ask you for a secret word. The secret word is tweak
- Now it will wget some deb packages from the official asus xandros repos. Let it do it’s magic. It will say you can start tweakeee when done
- When it is done, either click the tweakeee icon in Settings or enter the command tweakeee

Features Updates/Fixes
- Updated eeeWeather to 0.57. Added toggle checkbox to correspond to the -t flag. weather_loc.dat also updated to the lastest ICAO txt file (April 8th).
- Changed addparcel.py to not use sudo, this means that simpleui.rc will remain chowned by user and not use root. This allows it to play nicely with emeditor.
- Fixed the Enable ShowStartMenu button. In 0.3 it always restarts IceWM even if no settings are changed.
- Install Stardict, and add dictionaries with ease by using file chooser dialog.
- Improved the Lid Toggle shell script. It was often very slow to actually perform the lidbtn.sh update after choosing an option (up to 20 seconds).
- Removed toggling webcam on and off. (I would prefer to use eeecamtray but I had issues with it, so I will have to omit it for the time being).
- Added install for Digikam
- Added install for EMEditor
- Added install for Google Earth w/fix
- Added install for SuperTux
- Added install for GnoCHM</li>
- Added install for Firefox 3 Beta 5
- Added install for EEEControl</li>
- Added install for GPRS Config Utility
- Added install for MS Core Fonts
- Added install for basKet
- Added install for Gweled

FAQ: TweakEEE Isn’t Opening after I install

If you are one of those 2G or European owners, (and even non North American perhaps, hard to keep track of which EEE’s sold in which regions are bundled with what software and libraries) and you install TweakEEE and then execute the program but nothing happens, then you will have to follow these steps.

- When it is done, either click the tweakeee icon in Settings or enter the command tweakeee

Features Updates/Fixes
-  Config file is used now to store live information and disable/enable buttons appropriately.
- Fixed the removal of change keyboard layout (didn’t actually remove it from startup)
- Improved the accuracy of the regular expressions for non-english eeepcs (SOS wasn’t being removed on some european versions).
- Added an add/remove num and caps lock
- Toggle webcam on/off. I haven’t verified if this works (I don’t use webcam nor do I have it enabled in bios), I just took the technique from eeeusers forums/wiki so I’m assuming it works. If it could be verified that would be great.
- Menu Template file can be installed with “ShowStartMenu”. This uses the menu template found here submitted by user alanking (thanks!).
- In version 0.2.3 I had released a script called fix_tweakeee which updated non North American eeepcs with the appropriate libraries to run TweakEEE. However it was missing the Cairo package. So I added it, thanks to Olorin and girelo from eeeuser for reporting that French 4G and Italian eeepc needed the package to install TweakEEE.
- Added eeeWeather tab. This is one if the larger features. It has download, installation, and settings/info all wrapped in one. I also parsed the locations file myself and the user can easily select a location and apply it to their computer, and eeeWeather is updated to use this location right away, and at next reboot. If a location shows ??, then this means it is a problem with their weather reporting, not the eeeWeather program or TweakEEE.
- Due to request, users can change taskbar color of a Custom icewm installed theme (non tweakeee installed). I kinda quickly threw a button in there cause I didn’t have much room and am too lazy to re-arrange tongue.
- Fixed minor rare bug with the automated downloading of themes where if they download wasn’t done and wget would start the download again. It would somehow add on the download and the filesize would end up being larger than expected. This would cause the download to never finish, no matter how many times the download button was clicked. File would have to be manually deleted from the /tmp/ directory.
- New option added to the Appearance tab. User can choose from a predefined list of Custom X11 cursors for the eeepc. The list of cursors to choose from is quite large (wanted to give options). Once a new cursor is installed it does Require a restart of X, or the whole PC (whatever you prefer).
- x-Session Errors fixed. If you ever noticed that there is an error log file located in /home/user/x-session-errors which can grow to be quite large in size (reported to be upwards of 500MB). This file is just a log file for error messages that you most likely will never use. Just simply execute this option and it keeps the filesize under control.
- Lid Toggle button installer was added. This installs an icon in your settings which allows you to choose the action your eeepc takes when you shut the lid. The options available are, LCD Off, Standby or Shutdown. Inspired from here.
- Set Relative Screen Brightness. I don’t know why this wasn’t included, but this will move the brightness up or down 5 points when you plug or unplug your eeepc respectively. Inspired from here.
- History TextView Status area will now anchor to the left. So if a status line ended up being wider than the box, it would have auto scrolled down and to the right. Now auto scrolls down and to the left. Update, appears to be flakey and doesn’t work sometimes.
- Added Software Tab with Add/update repositories. Implemented threading with software tab. This allows you to perform other actions while a download takes place. For example GIMP is a 30 Meg download, and no you can start the download, and a live feed box will show you the status, but you can still perform other tasks while the download and install takes place.
- Download, Install and setup Mercury. As well update and set the shortcut keys to use. Mercury is a great program, equivalent of launchy or katapult.
- Install programs from repositories (right now just GIMP, gFTP and VLC, PCManFM, MPlayer downgrade and libdvdcss2). I will definitely add more now that the actual framework is in place.

FAQ: TweakEEE Isn’t Opening after I install

Features Updates/Fixes
- Added Default theme Taskbar BG color changing. As of now only your Own Custom downloaded themes won’t change taskbar color [0.2.2]
- Changed download management for files to check filesize. This will now work with non english eeepc. Additionally it is actually a little faster to check while download is commencing (bonus)[0.2.2]
- Fixed the Change Computer Name feature which was causing such a scary DCOP error. (I wouldn’t mind this being verified, but I’m almost 100% sure it is fixed) [0.2.3]
- Fixed the AsusLauncher Download, I think. (I would like a European user to verify this please) [0.2.3]
- Added a fix_tweakeee script that can be called if you install, execute and nothing happens. (If a 2G or european user could verify my script works for them after a factory reset that would be great, it works for me at least) [0.2.3]

**UPDATED FEB 18 2008**

Current Version = 0.2.1 Beta

Download Location
http://www.infinitedesigns.org/archives/184

**2G owners (maybe european 2G and 4G owners too)**
you will have to run these commands if it doesn't work for you

Code:

sudo apt-get update

Code:

sudo apt-get install python-gtk2 python-glade2 python-imaging python-numeric

Then the program should run (might require a reboot, I'm not sure)

Small update. Added the clock format, so it now works. The other update is a nice task bar tray background color picker. See the screen shot below. I think I'm pretty much done with all of the themes configuration, aside from the fact of adding more, which I can easily do. My next goal will probably be some sort of Repos addition, and then program installation. I'm still thinking how I will conquer this and make it user friendly, so it may take a bit of time.

Screenshot
New Taskbar Tray Color Picker
http://www.infinitedesigns.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/snapshot021_1.thumbnail.png

Feature Updates/Fixes:
- Icons directory wasn’t being made upon the initial enabling of a new theme, only after you re-enable it then the icons were being copied over.
- Added a Taskbar Tray Background Color Selector. Basically I noticed that the System Tray icons would use the default gray for their background. I prefer to select a color that matches the themes. This color selector is easy, and changes the color instantaneously once you choose a color and select okay. See the screen shot below.
- Added the Clock Format changer, so now your date in the taskbar can be set to one of 5 pre chosen formats
- Fixed some of the deb package installation scripts. I'm still getting the hang of making deb packages smile.

**UPDATED FEB 17 2008**

Current Version = 0.2 Beta

Well I’ve been hard at work and I must say this is a reasonable improvement from the last release. A lot of the additions are a little more backend, but I figure if I’m doing all this work on the back end code now, adding features in the future should speed up once I work out all the kinks.

Screenshot
New Interface Themes Section
http://www.infinitedesigns.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/snapshot02_1.thumbnail.png

Feature Updates/Fixes:
- initial.backup was being “backed up” every time the program was executed. That is fixed
- Huge overhaul on themes management. Organization and status much cleaner.
- Added AsusLauncher Theme chooser. Only 2 options as of now.
- Realtime interface updating (for most stuff). So when you apply settings you see your changes immediatly. Same goes for themes, they are updated instantaneously when enabled.
- Option to Toggle Logging on and off. If your program isn’t running with errors, then there’s no harm in toggling it off.
- Implemented config file, however isn’t being 100% used. It stores the configuration options and prevents spamming of buttons to an extent, but if you close the program and load back up it won’t set the checkboxes to their actual status (with the exception of themes). Hopefully on next update I’ll have the program remember and set the options appropriately.

**OLDER POST**

Welcome to the first official release of TweakEEE. Tweak EEE is only meant for default Xandros in easy mode, at the moment. Some of the features can be used in advanced but some (I'd say about half) of it's features won't do anything ( they will probably work but you won't notice a difference, because IceWM configuration doesn't affect advanced mode ). I was inspired to start this project primarily from this forum post. Automating the setup time after a factory reset is very handy, as well as offering easy customization to everybody is the main goal of this software. After writing my two guides for the eeepc setup, I realized that a large portion of these tasks could be automated making the margin of error very small. One thing I wanted to shy away from was making a command line shell script to perform these setup configuration steps. Shell scripts are okay, but GUI simplicity is what the eeepc is all about.

This software is Licensed under the GPL v3 or greater.

This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.  See the GNU General Public License for more details.

If you are one of those impatient people who want to try now, and read later, then the download can be found with the link below.

execute the program with the command "  tweakeee  "

or find the icon in settings tab

http://www.infinitedesigns.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/tweakeee2.thumbnail.png

Requirements:
EEEPC with Xandros, and PyGTK (GUI Python). The eeepc should come with Python GTK installed by default but if it doesn't, the official asus repos has it, so you can install it aptitude.

__________________________________________

Current Features:

- Full GUI Interface, using Python GTK
- Easily Customize IceWM Interface
- Easily Switch IceWM Themes (Theme selection)
- Backup of crucial files made upon initial startup, as well as incremental backups optional
- Ability to open crucial files for editing without opening a terminal
- Fairly detailed status window and history (I try to have it show as much progress and messages for bug handling, cause I'm sure there will be bugs)
- Behind the scenes stdout/stderr file logging for every command ran by the program (Can be turned on and off)
- Taskbar Icon Removal (SOS, EEEPC Tips, etc...)
- Add/Remove SCIM
- Change Shift Key (Remapping keyboard upon startup)
- Restart Asus Launcher GUI and Restart X with an easy click of the button.
- Enable Screensaver LCD Backlight power off (Power Management, no option to remove it, because it wouldn't make sense to).

Okay so I wanted to get a reasonable amount of features implemented before I released the 0.1 Beta version, and as you can see I think I accomplished this goal. However there are still many things I am planning, and I would definitely like some feedback, and help in a few areas.

____________________________________________________

Planned Features:

- Turn Camera On/Off
- Input String Checking. This would be for the Workspace Shortcuts. For the time being please don't input crazy strings like =""="CTRL+"=1"+""==. I don't check for wierd character input at the moment, so please just input normal keyboard combinations.
- Easy Mode Mouse Pointer
- Install extra repos. I however am thinking about having the ability to select what repositories to add. So there would be the most common ones in the list.
- An actual .CFG file which stores a list of the settings that have been implemented, allowing for the correct status to be shown (If you check the box to Show Start Menu, and apply. It works. However when you restart the program the checkbox shows to be unchecked, this is because it doesn't remember what it has set, and I don't check.)
- A feature to open/view current history files and error log files
- Date and time the Operations (done through activeProcessUpdate) in the error log file
- Install Software from repos and insert icon automatically (Common ones known to work without issue like GIMP, VLC, gFTP, supertux, Easy Mode Editor, 3egprs, + other tools)
- Date Format in Taskbar
- Install Mercury Launcher and ability to customize shortcut and program background (Awesome program, deserves its own bullet)
- Add the library libdvdcss (Play commercial DVD's)
- Downgrade mplayer to the older version which plays more file formats (ie. h264)
- Add more IceWM configuration settings upon request
- Ability to add your own scripts to launch at startup
- Ability to add your own scripts to launch upon network connection
- Launch a Super User File Manager (This is easy, I just thought of it too late)
- Update Start Menu with a config file from eeeuser wiki which adds all the relevant programs (Easy to add as well, I just forgot.)
- Add the Zinni Designs Asuslauncher Background. (Again, fairly easy to do)

The list above are features that I plan to implement and I'm nearly 100% sure that I'm capable (and pygtk is too). It isn't set in stone however if it is on that list, it is most likely you will see those features in future versions.

____________________________________________________

Potential Features: (I have to research these to see if I can incorporate them without too much difficulty)

- Download progress bar for the theme downloads (I had already attempted but failed)
- Ability to change other Default applications (default text reader, etc)
- Perhaps.. an Advanced mode feature with customization for it's settings and appearance (Would be after the easy mode version is well established and working)
- Enable Full Desktop (Still under contemplation)
- Install and Configuration for IceMC (I haven't had a chance to use it, but if it is a nice as I read it is, then perhaps)
- AsusLauncher Background changer/tabs colors/configuration (Not Icons, Easy Mode Editor does that just fine I'm not planning to compete)
- Theme profiles, based on the incremental backup of configuration files (user could save an incremental backup as a theme profile instead and load their theme setup.)
- Adding Rescue Mode to Grub Bootloader (Have to look at mounting the rescue/factory file system with read/write options, if it is at all possible. This also could be risky.
- Error handling for actual python errors

______________________________________________

Where I'd appreciate some help

- [Not Needed Anymore] Pictures for the Themes. The space I have allotted is 120px wide and 80px high. If a member of the eeeuser community could use my tool and get nice looking screenies, that would be great
- [Not Needed Anymore] I would like to know if anybody has experience with Glade and "passing custom data with a button handler". I can elaborate more if you want.
- My first time coding with python, so if I have any sloppy code, or heck if there's a more efficient way to do something, please let me know.
- Threading the wget download. I had many attempts with little to no success. I just can't seem to get Live output/feed from a thread and update my GTK gui without it freezing for the remainder of that thread. I've searched for help about the freezing of the GTK gui and threading but have had no success.
- Please let me know if there's more IceWM commands you want implemented. There is a whole slew of them listed here as well as other configurations.
- If you have feedback for layout changes, and better way to organize the interface, I'm up for suggestions
- If somebody wants to make a custom icon for tweakeee and I like it wink then that would be great, otherwise I'll probably continue using 3g default one.

Known Bugs:
I'll add stuff here once released and I get feedback

Looks great!  Sight unseen, it seems like the kinda thing that Asus should have released with the Eee.  Keep up the good work.

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

Looks promising. I noticed, however, that when I installed it, tweakeee did not look to see if I had a .AsusLauncher/simplui.rc file in my local directory, so it did not show up in my interface after I installed and restarted. (Because the local simpleui file overrides the one in /opt)

For complete novices, this should not pose a problem, since they are unlikely to have a local simpleui.rc, but you might want to check for the local version during install and modify it too, if it exists.

I also tried installing and enabling a new theme, but I didn't like it, so I went back to  the default. It all looks fine now, except my task bar is now gray (as it was in the experimental new theme) and did not get changed back to the green I know and love.

Oh, and thank you for the easy way to get rid of those stupid extra icons on the task bar. I've been wondering about how to do that for months.

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

Yah, the theme installation is only IceWM. So it could look quite ugly with some of the default AsusLauncher theme. Its kind of an ugly 2 tiered theme. We can theme IceWM but AsusLauncher also has to be themed.  And Thanks for pointing out the Default. When you click enable on the default, I just have it write  AsusSilver/default.theme  to the file. I will add a drop box, where the user can select the Sunset, Olive, Silver, or Red. So they can get back their taskbar that they wanted.

Also you say you like the green taskbar and tried the others.h. My favorite theme combo is actually, the Asuslauncher Silver, with the ThinBlack2 theme. It is really sleek.

Also I just quickly threw those themes in. If you can find ones you like from here http://themes.freshmeat.net/browse/925/ that match the AsusLauncher gui, and I can add them.

*Edit*
Also if you change the AsusLauncher Theme to The Blue one (blue tabs and such) and then enable Murrina Candy for IceWM I think it looks kind of nice.

FYI, I just fixed the script in posinst and now it preserves your icons even if they were in the /home/user/,AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc

Hi there,

Great program.  Just wanted to add to the above regarding it always using the silver theme as default.  This also affects the Personalisation program that comes as standard with the eeepc.  No matter which Asus theme you choose, the taskbar remains silver.  Quite easy to change with the Start button enabled but still a little annoying.  Any chance of a fix?

Thanks for producing this excellent piece of software.  Keep up the good work.

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

I have downloaded the Crystal Project icons and keep the 128x128 ones in a folder on my SD drive. When I want a good looking icon for Easy Mode, I point Sublime Porte's Launchicon tool at that foder and just create one.  I thought looknfeel.png would work well with Tweakeee.  I also moved Tweakee into the same sub-tab as SublimePorte created for his tools and I have put Coyotee's EmEditor tool there too, all with new Crystal Project icons, so it looks like this:

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg245/Niel1952/AsusEee/settings.jpg
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg24 … ttings.jpg

Because of the licencing restrictions applicable to the Crystal Project icons, I don't think I can post the icons unless I post the library but it is actually easier doing it the way I am than downloading individual icons.

Perhaps you, SublimePorte and Coyotee can come to some arrangement to make the default place for your programs the same sub tab as they do complement each other.  As you can see I also have an icon for kwrite opening simpleui.rc and for File Manager in that tab. When I'm looking for an icon, I open the the Crystal Project icons folder in thumbnail mode, to make my selection before using the Launchicon tool.

The tool looks great, though.

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

Yes. My next goal is to greatly improving the theming part of the application. I realized it has some flaws, so that is first on my agenda. It won't be a long scrollable box. And I'm going to have it refresh in real time, so it won't require a restart of ALG or X to show. It will be quite awesome if I do say so  smile.

I will hopefully have this by sunday or monday, but no promises.

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

This program sounds like a good idea and similar to XPY/Vispa on Windows

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

Code:

rm: cannot remove `/usr/bin/tweakeee': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `/usr/bin/reloadalgnoprompt': No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove `/usr/bin/recoveralg': No such file or directory

That isn't a problem. I just reproduced that on my machine. What seems to be the problem here is the

Code:

cp: cannot stat `/opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc.tweakeee': No such file or directory

Niel. Enter this command

Code:

sudo cp /home/user/.AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc.tweakeee /opt/xandros/share/AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc.tweakeee

Run the installer now and it should be fine.

However wait like 20 minutes and I'll have 0.2.1 released with a nice feature smile

Can you change the fonts (color and size) under the icons in the Launcher with this app?

Re: [BETA] TweakEEE - Easy mode configuration

Excellent request. I will look into this. And if it is possible, I will see if I could implement it into this application.
