Got KDE 4 running on the eee

I started with an install of eeeXubuntu that had been tweaked according to the wiki instructions, then added this repository
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main
and installed kde4-core. This is really just following these instructions
http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.1.php
end result was a kde4 install on my EEE.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2346/2264917175_a321eafd46_d.jpg
I experienced no problems getting this set up. After it was installed I just logged out and logged into kde 4 from the session manager and there I was. Turned on the integrated graphics accelerated desktop effects and it works well, sound works well, network works great, the function keys on the asus to change things like brightness and sound work. The desktop itself seems pretty quick on this little laptop.

I needed to run nm-applet from a terminal to get the network icon to show up in the system tray, and the same goes for a couple other icons (sound, battery), but not having them in the system tray doesn't seem to impact their function at all. I can still adjust the sound with the function keys and use the net even when that stuff's not there. And from what I can tell KDE 4 is just as stable on the eee as on my other computers, which is to say it's surprisingly stable considering the new codebase.

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

Is this KDE 4.0.1 or KDE 4.0?
That's pretty cool, can't wait for KDE 4 to mature.

How is it in terms of screen size?

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

It's KDE 4.0.1, that repo is up to date with the bugfix release. From what I heard the 4.0 release was still pretty buggy but this isn't bad at all.

The widgets are not fully implemented yet in the desktop so resizing the entire system tray/task bar isn't possible which can be annoying on the eee where that space is needed, and I've heard that a few Xorg things need to be worked out with regards to adjusting resolution etc. so that resizing works right. In the meantime it's stuck on the default size, which can somewhat crowd out a tiny screen like the eee.

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

One more screenshot... A composite image of all four desktops under Compiz-Fusion.  As most Eee users know, a lot of dialog boxes weren't designed to fit on an 800x480 screen.  Using the Desktop Wall plugin, set for a 2x2 desktop, you can <control>+<alt>+<up/down/left/right> your way around to view the entire window.

As soon as the Shelf plugin makes its way into the repository, I'll start using it instead... that will actually scale the window down to fit the current desktop.

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

very nice, in the process of getting it for my desktop.  it'll probably end up on the eee too.  doesnt look very good for the 800x480 res though, maybe some tweakings possible?...

Yep, you can run Compiz Fusion from Xfce, including the wall plugin above...  just enable direct rendering as shown here, and then install/setup compiz as usual.

KDE4 looks so tempting... I really wanna get my 701 dirty ...
Just curious of two things:
-- How about footprint & overhead? Is it resource-hungry? And speedwise is it noticeably slower than xfce4?
-- Does Basket run well (This is the main reason for me to try out KDE@Eee)?

Between KDE4 and Compiz, my Eee is pretty slow at times (for a Linux install)... Not as slow as some of my WinXP machines have been over the years however. Faster than XP on an Eee for sure.  Right now I can't play tetris with it.  Before, I could play under Xandros with no problem.  I'm not sure at this point whether I'll go to a lighter desktop... I'm torn between speed and the productivity gained from a composite desktop manager.

Here's my guess in order of speed (fastest to slowest).

1. Linux command prompt, no GUI
2. Asus Eee Easy mode (Xandros)
3. Asus Eee Advanced mode (Xandros)
4. Slackware (est.)
5. Xubuntu (EeeXubuntu or others)
6. Windows XP running nlite (est)
7. Ubuntu (gnome desktop) w/Eee script pack (est.)
8. Kubuntu (running KDE3) (est.)
9. [x|k]ubuntu running KDE4, stock settings
10. EeeXubuntu, running KDE4 and Compiz (my current install)
11. Stock Windows XP (est.)

I've heard KDE4 should be faster than KDE3, however I would say that with the default fluff turned on, there's no way this is true.  Once you turn some of the **** off, I'm sure it would be pretty close.

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

The icon pack and theme they're using now are very pretty...I'll be curious to see if Canonical does anything new with the Gnome look in 8.xx....

Just to mention also the option that I tweaked with... you can install multiple environments on one instance of Ubuntu or whatever. I added Ice to run when I needed more speed. Ice on Ubuntu 7.10 is not as fast as it is in the modified Easy Mode of Xandros, but I do think it's faster than any XFCE, KDE, or Gnome setup I've seen, including Advanced Mode in Xandros.

Faster than stock Advanced Xandros, that sounds pretty good smile  Is it faster in boot time as well??  I've never tried icewm, I might have to give it a shot.

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

I'm also running Eeebuntu with Xfce window manager.  Between Xandros, Eeedora and XP I'm happiest wtih Eeebuntu. One thing that made a huge difference, I added the Kubuntu-desktop meta package into Eeebuntu from package manager. It chewed up about 700mb of additional space, but now all the internet, network, multimedia and system apps I could ever need are installed and fully functional. I'm left wtth about 650mb of space on SSD which is enough when SDHC is factored in. With compiz fusion+Eeebuntu+Kubuntu desktop its such an impressive little device. Co-workers and friends are stunned over how usable, flexible and functional Eee actually is.  I'm glad infinite_reality tried kde4, I've been wondering if it's Eee ready, looks good.  smile

Yes, you have. IceWM is the windows manager that Easy Mode uses. wink

As for booting, I'm not sure -- it really depends on how you set up Ubuntu. If you have straightforward partitioning, and your setup allows you to use parallel execution in startup, and you turn off a lot of services, I would say, yes. If you use disk encryption like me... not so much. tongue

As for speed in execution, yeah, absolutely. This is KDE vs. Ice we're talking about... there's no comparison! But with the caveat that Ice is speed-oriented. It does not have 10% of the bells and whistles of KDE, let alone Gnome.

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

Is it possible to install KDE 4 to default Xandros installation? I've tried it with Debian experimental repository but there is conflict with KDE 3.5 installation. Anyone who knows Debian and how-to install KDE 4 next to KDE 3?

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

I was wondering what the battery life of the Eee turned out to be while running KDE 4 and Compiz. I'm interested in doing this as well to my Eee, but if the battery life runs too low then I run into problems with the classes that I have back-to-back (I'm a student who uses the Eee for a lot of note taking, and don't have downtime to recharge the batteries between a couple of hour-and-a-half classes).

Thanks!

I got a little over two hours with mine, that was with wifi turned on (I have the 3.5 hour battery).  The default Xandros lasted much longer than this.  At this point I think I'm going to remove KDE4 and go with XFCE or IceWM... My opinion is, after a week of running it, KDE4 is too bloated to use on the Eee.

If you're using it for school, I'd recommend buying a second battery anyway, just in case.  They're pretty cheap.

Ok. I guess I'll wait until summer rolls around before I play around with this then. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a good deal on the batteries or if there is improvements for this.

Thanks!

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

It's lovely to see you guys try KDE 4.0.x on the EEE pc. I wouldn't count on it running great, though. KDE 4 might be lighter on resources, but as many apps aren't ported yet you must also run KDE 3 apps - and having the libraries for BOTH in memory is obviously not good for speed... Also, there hasn't been much optimization in KDE 4.0 yet, and KDE exposes many bugs in other parts of linux. For example, there is a huge known bug in Xine which causes KDE's Phonon to use a lot of battery power, all the time... Further there are graphical issues in X.org and drivers (though I suppose the Intel ones are pretty good, as the're FOSS). And combining it with Compiz isn't very efficient either - better use Kwin with compositing. Besides, the combination of Gnome and KDE apps, or even worse - desktop independent apps and KDE apps is also wasting a lot of memory. Firefox, OpenOffice etc duplicate huge amounts of work already done by KDE and Gnome, wasting memory on a small device like this. Better use lightweight alternatives using already loaded libraries - KOffice and konqueror, in case of KDE, as office and webbrowser.

Expect more from KDE 4.1 - I know a lot of time and energy in the KDE community is directed at the EEE pc, and that is only about to increase (hint: wait for an upcoming cool announcement on dot.kde.org in the next weeks about EEE pc's and KDE).

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

Been meaning to post this myself.  As a KDE developer, I was very keen to get this running, and it's been working like a dream.  I just did a clean minimal eeebuntu install with xfce, then installed all of KDE4.  I got around the huge panel problem by getting rid of it altogether and instead just use applets on the desktop, krunner (Alt-F2) to launch, and KWin composite switch and reveal for task switching (the panel resize dialog should be in 4.0.2).

As for speed, even with KWin composite on it's running as fast as my main laptop, no delays in response to my actions (but I do have 2Gb memory installed).

Re: Got KDE 4 running on the eee

I am very reluctant to post as I am a NooB, But I started looking into linux about the time that Vista came out, decided that if I was going to to learn a new OS then I would learn a new OS! I am running the default OS with IceWM menu. Actually I have barely touched it. I am running several distro's on 1g flash drives and Xubuntu persistant on a Memorex 4g flash drive and Ubuntu on an 8g Transcend SDHC class6 card and I'm installing Shift Linux-kde-0.6.2 on a 8g PQI SDHC class 6 card even as we speak. The reason that I mention this is that Shift is built on Ubuntu 7.10 if I remember correctly (I am 58 and totally self taught when it comes to this stuff and the old memory... well we all know what happens when you run low on memory %)). Well the Shift Linux-kde-0.6.2 is running KDE 4 and it should (I think) behave the same as Ubuntu.(same kernel??) The  Shift Linux-flux-0.6.2 is Xubuntu with the blue desktop similar to the one posted by Neil J. I just thought maybe some of you might want to download and burn a cd and take a look. I will know more tomorrow. Maybe all my burning and testing will help some others.
