EEE PC Standby Magnet - where does it go?!

Hi guys

After attempting to intall my touchscreen and failing miserably, I noticed that my tiny silver magnet had come loose.

I'm assuming this is positioned on the outer metal part of the LCD screen and in turn activates a reed switch on the mobo somewhere.  The only thing is I can't locate anything of the sort on the motherboard.

Does anyone know where this magnet should be placed - diagrams would be extremely useful!

Re: EEE PC Standby Magnet - where does it go?!

it goes inside the outer screen bezel, I cant remember for sure where, but it is on the left hand side down low near the hinge

I left it out:) I like being able to turn the eee on while its closed

Re: EEE PC Standby Magnet - where does it go?!

Hmmm, I tried it all the way around the bezel without much luck - closing the lid when I made changes to see if it had the desired effect.  If anyone could post a pic of theirs, I'd be very grateful.

I'm getting tired of clicking start and standby when I could just close the lid - yes I'm lazy!

oh, you must have your lid back together, I was thinking you should be able to see where it goes, there is a holder for it.

Try this from IVC:

There's a holder for it? Arrggghhh!! That explains a lot! I must have hacked it away to make room for the touchscreen driver PCB - and the magnet must have fallen out then.

How does it sit when you're looking at it face on?  Is it vertical so that it looks like a rectangular block, or does it face you so that it looks like a square with the end of the magnet facing you?

Re: EEE PC Standby Magnet - where does it go?!

I'm not sure if this helps. Apparently, the magnet is used together with the magnetic sensor used. What this sensor does is to goes into standby mode whenever there is this strong magnetic field nearby. hence, for trial & error to see where this sensor is located, just use this magnet to go round near the parameter of the keyboard area and see if the screen is blank out momentarily and i suppose you might know where to place this magnet then....smile not sure if this helps.

I tried this without much luck, does the direction of the magnet make a difference?

@gospeed.racer - your pic is very handy, when I get home I'll take another look - I don't think I tried that area with the magnet, thanks!

Assuming it's a Hall effect sensor, then yes the pole direction is important.

It is a hall sensor! Initially i thought they could be using the magnet from the speaker...

so hukie69, you might want to confirm that the magnet is not from the speaker...smile

Theres a magent from the speaker aswell? Well, I hacked away the part of the shell that holds the speaker - I can't understand why they'd use a magent for the speaker thought.  It's a dull silver coloured bar (same colour as the LCD screen bezel), about half a centimetre long and the standby function doesn't work now that it's in the wrong place, so I'm guessing it is the standby magnet.  If it's a hall sensor, then my attempts to to find out where the sensor was were futile due to my holding the magent in the wrong position!

Re: EEE PC Standby Magnet - where does it go?!

Speakers are made from magnets - a coiled wire creates a magnetic field which moves a magnet connected to the speaker cone, creating vibrations and therefore noise. This is probably what he was referring to, but no, there is a completely separate magnet for the hinge sensor. Just play with the magnet that came out till you figure out where it goes. Personally I disable standy on closed lid, because I often just close the lid to move the laptop around. If I want it off I just take the split second to press the power button.

Generally the coil is connected to the cone and the magnet is stationary connected to the speaker frame. They want the cone to have as little weight as possible.

True, was just trying to throw down a quick explanation and didn't think very deeply, haha.

i have absolutely no experience hacking or doing mods so i'm wondering if it is risky for someone like me to open up my 4g and remove the magnet so i can use it while it's closed. this is the only mod i'm interested in doing ...

obviously i'd be voiding the warranty but should i even attempt this?

Re: EEE PC Standby Magnet - where does it go?!

Why on earth would you want to take out the magnet when you can can use it while it's closed by tweaking the software?

here's a picture of the magnet.  it's attached to the bezel side.  sorry the second picture's out of focus, but you'll get the idea.
