[Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

Hi,

It's a bit of a hack - and has some serious usability problems - but if you want to have increased screen resolution on your Eee under Linux (including the default Xandros install) without installing Windows and then running VMware, here's a little script to do it:

http://www.bleb.org/software/incres.sh [view source]

And a photo of it in action at 960x576:

http://bleb.org/photos/image/fYyHzpi/display.jpg

...and 1280x976:

http://bleb.org/photos/image/lfTmaZK/display.jpg

It works by spawning a VNC server and then using a VNC client back to localhost.

The only two flaws I'm aware of at the moment:

1) Ctrl-Alt-T opens a terminal in the master X session, rather than the one being watched. If launched from a menu, it doesn't render properly.

2)krdc, despite having options to start fullscreen and scaled, seems to ignore the options.

Comments welcome.

Cheers,

Andrew

I wouldn't mind some more info on this please.

1) How do you choose between the two resolutions?

By telling it on the command line -

incres.sh 960x576      [this is the default, so is superfluous]

or

incres.sh 1280x976

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

I see 2 issues at the moment... low drawing speed and a little bit blur.
Expect a lot of complain from non-Linux users which doesnt know it is just vnc scaling :-P

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

That's a clever solution! It should work on any version of Linux that has an rdc that supports scaled virtual resolutions.

What is the associated speed hit like?

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

How to install and use on the built-in Xandros (either in simple or advanced mode):

1) Enable the standard Xandros repositories. See wiki for details.

2) sudo apt-get install vncserver krdc

3) Download incres.sh to your home directory

4) Open a terminal and do: chmod a+x incres.sh

5) Run ./incres.sh <width>x<height>

6) Click on the fullscreen, scale and unpin toolbar buttons in the resulting window.

Speed is OK for normal use, certainly makes Eclipse a whole lot more usable. Wouldn't watch a video on it (not even tried it to see if it works).

Server problems fixed, sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

@jaffa: thanks for the instructions.

I've installed and tested it.
If you want to see how it looks like (when running firefox)
I've used 1024x600 as a resolution and made a screenshot.
See http://www.effem.110mb.com/1024x600.png
As you see text is not fully sharp, but definitely readable (although it makes me feel I need to clean my contacts smile )

Well the apt-get command has told you it was going to download a lot.
This happens if you have the debian feeds in it (actually this happened to me as well, ended up doing an apt-get -f install).
The debian feeds give a lot of kde stuff.

You might try to remove all the packages you installed. Not sure if that will help.
Or just see if things still work.

For going to advanced mode: this is clearly described in the wiki.

NOTE TO ALL: this is not a straightforward thing. Proceed at own risk and make sure that you know what you are doing.
And be sure to follow gaffa's instruction to the letter.

FM.

No, the screen is still running at 800x480. This is basically a virtual desktop being scaled, in software, to fit that resolution.

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

Thanks, I've tried this out at 1024x600 but it's a bit slow really, probably just gonna stick to the default res.

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

Thanks, Jaffa. I tried it at several resolutions. I will leave the vncserver installed in case I want to use it at some point, but for now I plan to use the standard res. I've gotten accustomed to working my around screen size issues.

after installing vnc server and krdc, in my ubuntu/gnome system.  This does not work.  Is it because I don't have all the kde components or something? my terminal output looks like this:

Re: [Announce] Increasing screen resolution on LCD under Linux

Why XP on EeePC can have 1024x768 with ASUS's drivers but no such luck on Xandros? They seem to supply driver source and nobody hacked it?
