I have been trying to understand and trying to solve the problem of the disappearing icons in easy mode.
Is there a particular update that causes eBook, Wikipedia, Web Learning, and others to disappear. I read here it was the Skype update, but I restored the system and only applied the dictionary update and the same thing happened. I also used apt-get update instead of add remove and it happened that way, too.
I tried restoring the "before" simpleui.rc file but that makes no difference.
Will ASUS ever fix this?

Did you by chance update the Anti-Virus program? I did recently and found my whole simpleui.rc file replaced with a different version. This was very frustrating because of all the modifications I had made to my simpleui.rc file and my idiocy in failing to back it up.
I subsequently have searched these boards and have found that this has happened to other people (though I don't know if it is exclusively related to the anti-virus update.) I have updated software several times before without incident.

I've tried it a couple times.
I read on the boards the villain was Skype, so reinitialized the OS and backed up the simpleui.rc file. Then I updated just the Longman dictionary and checked, and the same icons were missing.
This leads me to believe it's not a particular update, but rather the update program itself.
Round three, I updated using apt-get update, then apt-get upgrade, avoiding the graphical add-remove, and still the icons disappeared.
I tried fixing the simpleui.rc file which was a tedious process with varying results.
There's nothing wrong with the syntax of the file, and all the missing icons are represented in it. The problem is the "target" of the icon is no longer where it is pointing.
I manually tracked down a few of the programs and was able to restore a couple that way, but eventually got tired of restarting to see if it worked, and restored Linux instead to try to track down if it was a particular program -- seems not.

I clicked on Add/Remove software earlier today. I got a blank screen after the little file transfer icon disappeared, I saw no choices of things to upgrade just a blank screen, and yet, my icons are now gone even though I selected nothing to change because I saw no choices.
Point me to the section where I can get my eBook icon back.
Note: I did search but the wiki article was for Advanced desktop, which I'm not using. I also saw an earlier note which said the info was in /home/user/.Desktop.bak
I don't have this; the best I have is /home/user/.Desktop

Please start keeping your working simpleui.rc file on /home/user/.AsusLauncher/ as recommended in the wiki

So, since I haven't done this because I haven't read every page in the wiki yet, is my only recourse at this point to use F9 and start from square one again?

No, you can manually edit your simpleui.rc.
There is information on the wiki, including a copy of what is believed to be the original default simpleui.rc. SublimePorte and Coyotee on our forums have also created tools which can help you add/re-add icons.
I think the easiest way to re-add the icons would be to print out the original simpleui.rc from the wiki, download Coyotee's AsusLauncher Advanced Editor and then use that to delete the corrupt entries for the missing icons and, following the information on the printed out simpleui.rc, add the icons back in.

If you want a full understanding of what of happening see this post
New update with European and Asian Languages causing icon problems
http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=6520
The problem has been around since before Christmas in various forms and is caused by the newer versions of the simpleui.rc file with sloppy coding. The two main problems are incorrect links to files or repetitions/spelling mistakes. My extensive F9-ing seems to show that it is NOT caused by any particular program update - Just accessing the update function alone is enough to trigger problem in most cases...
Niel's suggestion does work and is one possible fix for the problem, but it isn't a true solution because it effectively overrides the simpleui.rc file and will most likely prevent future valid updates from taking effect (because it will override them).
The other possible solution is to fix the mistakes as per my post but once again this isn't a true solution either because as soon as you open the update utility the faulty updates will override your "fixes" - If you avoid the update utility you will be fine (if you want to look in the update utility occasionally just keep a spare copy of the "fixed" file somewhere and then paste it over the "damaged" one - I keep it on a USB flash drive so I can "fix" other eeePCs too).
Asus are aware of them problem and I last spoke to Level 2 tech support today and they are still "working on it". What exactly they are working on I am not sure - I can't see why it has been 2 months since the problem appeared and they still haven't managed to correct a few typos and incorrect links in a simple text based file !!!! They must be very very slow, lazy or incompetent (or perhaps a mixture of all three).
Perhaps you could also complain to ASUS – the squeaky wheel gets the oil as they say – so start squeaking !!!
Has ASUS Technical Support actually helped you?

Thanks so much Niel1952. There are not enough hours in the day for me to read everything, yet alone assimilate it!

Well, I lost the eBook reader after updating and e-mailed Asus about it. This is what I got for a reply.
Our developers have decided to change the layout of the EEEPC interface. This means that they may add or remove buttons when you update the EEEPC's software.

So, I looks like they think it is OK to just remove a program or two when they feel like it. Now I realize that it is the icon that is gone and there is a terminal window command to access the program, but without this forum I wouldn't know that. For the average user that bought an "easy" computer, the program is gone when the icon disappears.
I replied with a request for a prompt fix. We'll see what happens.

I will be amazed if they even reply Jim, and as for fixing it promptly well the horse has well and truly bolted on that one, I have been waiting over two months for the same fix - please keep us updated with your progress...

Actually, the only icon I truly want removed in Easy mode is the Add/Remove one so I won't be tempted to click on it again! Too bad ASUS couldn't remove that one instead of the eBook!
