Hi all,
Me and some friends in Hong Kong / Taiwan have made some updated packages
and tutorials on using Eee PC, in a blog: http://www.xepc.org/
We also made a repository for updated packages:
deb http://updates.xepc.org/ p701 main
Feel free to give any comment!
PS. Only chinese at the moment :-)

Would have been more useful with at least some English text on the main site. Hopefully package descriptions in the repository are in English? Haven't looked yet, but will at some point.

lazyfai,
Why do you call your website "semi-official website for the Asus Eeepc"?

Only for us ignorant north americans. And we're outnumbered at least 3:1.
I think this is great. (The program descriptions are in English, by the way).
I've been wanting to upgrade amarok so it doesn't keep messing up my iPod's TV shows and gapless playback. You can upgrade Amarok using this repository, and it should even work with the latest iPods!
You'll have to be patient though, it seems to be a pretty slow connection.

Today we released an "Eee PC upgrade disc" beta version.
The usage is to add all our upgraded packages to the 1st partition, ie. it won't take the valuable USER partition and also it won't be erased using the restore functions (F9 in BIOS).
To use it, first backup all user data, then use the DVD or F9 function in BIOS to remove the USER data.
Afterward, boot with our upgrade disc (ISO is here: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/xepc/xepc-20080209.iso).
It will do the 2nd stage of recovery, which includes removing old packages, installing new packages and do some good configurations for your Eee PC.
Feel free to try and give comment!

Has anyone (english speaking perhaps) tried the upgrade CD? Also, does anyone know if you can do the upgrade process from a usb-stick or something similar? (I don't have an external CD/DVD drive just yet.

i have done this and it works fine. i was anxious to try out a USB to IDE/Sata cable i bought yesterday. i even installed k3b on the Eee and burned the disc from the Eee. Everything worked fine. Firefox is now 2.0.0.11. Thunderbird is 2.0.0.9. Amarok is 1.4.3. Pidgin is 2.3.1. Skype is 2.0.0.27. Now most of these i had upgraded beforehand, so the new version was on sda2. i wonder if i have to delete the dups on sda2. Incidentally, the upgrade does not disturb the user partition (sda2) so no worries on losing your preferences and settings.

lazyfai,
How much additional disk space you need for this upgrade. I am asking this because I have already add something to sda1 and I am worried if there is enough space to do this upgrade.

Yes, it should work with latest iPod after the upgrade, it should be amarok 1.4.8 with latest libgpod.
But I dont have iPod classic to test, I only have iPod Shuffle 2nd gen.
Yes all software versions are multi-language.

Hi albkwan,
Yes the disc is near 300Mb in size, but the upgrade only need under 150Mb on
sda1 as there are many upgrades (which doesn't take extra space) and
several extra packages added, which need space.
I don't know the exact number but it still got about 100M space after upgrade,
and the upgrade disc is intended for those freshly installed or DVD recovered Eee PC, so ...
and yes, you reminded me an important thing, I will add something like space
checking before doing update in next version.

Follow the screenshots on the xepc.org website. It's pretty straightforward (if you've updated software before). The software is in English.
I found that the tradeoff for the upgraded packages was compromised stability and ended up pushing F9. BTW, the upgraded Amarok didn't detect my iPod and it seems there is a manual step involved to get it to work. You need to edit /etc/fstab and enter a line for dbus, or for your iPod, or something. Be sure you know what you're doing.

dude make that english
Offline
dbus and bluetooth services are already added.
For iPod, I found that some models can be auto mounted but some cannot, quite strange.
And actually the upgrade is intended for those who dont know how to use apt-get or other
upgrading method and want to make the change directly which can sustain over F9 recover,
so the first step is to backup your data and recover it using DVD/F9, if you don't, maybe
the 2 partitions will have same files / directory which causes trouble sometimes.
The most trouble part is KDE applications, if you ever use Debian's KDE packages, you
cannot use normal Xandros/XEPC KDE applications anymore as they are not compatible.
I don't recommend directly adding Debian/Ubuntu/other distro software repos...

lazyfai,
Does your upgrade include a kernel ? If not, this method would be perfect for a kernel upgrade such as mine for iptables support which requires rebuilding all of the network drivers.
http://wiki.eeuser.com/iptables
Offline
Yes, this method can be used in upgrading kernel, I've built a 2.6.24 before, but to play safe, I haven't include at this release, need more testing. :-)
The upgrade disc can be remaster easily, just taking care of extra.list, remove.list which are the list of packages to add and remove from sda1.

Having looked into the content of the iso, I can't wait to install this - So many updates all at once, and the best is that the updates are done on sda1 rather than sda2.
Everything seems to work out alright, boots up as normal. However, when booting from USB, I noticed that sda1 is now 100% full. So I begin to think I may have missed some files due to disk full.
Any idea what should I check to verify if any files are missing?

For those people who feel the xepc.org speed too slow, I have opened a project on sourceforge.net, and now you can download from there, should be a lot faster!
English description included.

Is there a list of packages included and kernel options/modules enabled, and new features list for XEPC? Also I presume it is still based on the Xandros repositories rather than the Ubuntu ones.

If you download the iso and "mount - loop" it. You will see 2 files extra.list and remove.list that described the packages to remove and upgrade. You can also edit the files to change what to remove / upgrade.
I think most of the packages in the XEPC.org CD are compiled by lazyfai and his friends for the eeepc, not taken from other repositories.
Offline
Yes, most of the packages are from upstream debian stable source and
recompiled under Eee PC development environment, so it will be very
much compatible than directly install Debian/Ubuntu packages.
Basically there is no dependency to any 3rd party repository.

Due to very high demand of the upgrade ISO, my web server became very unstable these days, please use this link instead: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/xepc/xepc-20080209.iso

When I used this the disc on a Eee PC 4G, I get the following error message:
Incorrect CD - No xepc update disc found.
